m400 #1098 here. you should mention that on the original cello set, the session cellist refused to detune, so the lowest six notes or so are a bowed bass instead. very distinctive.
@neutralearth106112 күн бұрын
I had always wondered why those bottom notes sounded different. I found out about that cello player a few years ago. His name is Reginald Kirby and was also a player on a number of Beatles recordings including Eleanor Rigby! On my old worn tapes, it's not as noticeable as the newer cleaned up tapes and digital versions. Those were shockingly different, like night and day, and way more noticeable than my tapes.

One of the things that I love the mellotron is the running tape effect, some old movies used to do that thing and I just love that effect, unique and perfect

Thanks for watching! I'm not sure I know what the "running tape effect" is, could you please explain further? Thank you!
@Taremioca6920 күн бұрын
@neutralearth1061 it's simple, just press a note with the violin effect and let the note go until the note runs out (it's sounds better with a chord)

@@Taremioca69 Cool, thanks! I love that too!

Nice video. Tho I’ve read several books on the mellotron, this hands on tutorial really puts it into perspective. There is a time limit as to how long a note plays from the time you hold it down, correct…8 seconds??? Thanks for sharing!
@neutralearth106121 күн бұрын
Thanks! Yes, the tapes will play approximately 8 seconds. Now this might seem to some a major fault to some keyboard players, but in actuality it forces the player to use what is now known to experienced Mellotron players as the "Crawling Spider" technique to get around the sustain limitation when longer sustain times are required.
@theclearsounds391122 күн бұрын
I never realized how close the motor is to some of the tapes. I guess the magnetic field isn't strong enough to erase the tapes. Wonderful demonstration of the Mellotron!
@neutralearth106122 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! Yeah, you'd think they could have put some type of barrier between the motor and the tapes. I would hope they measured the magnetic field and determined a barrier wasn't needed.

As soon as I saw the word Mellotron pop up, I had to click on it. I'm 69 and the very first band to become my favorite was The Moody Blues. That was my first exposure to the instrument. And who better to showcase it was Michael Pinder. It wouldn't be till many years later that I actually learned how they worked. Question: Have you acquired the complete library of tapes to be used in it? Do you have to swap out the entire library bank or can you just change out single tapes. Next time, open up the hood and demonstrate how it works! I'm sure many folks would love to see just how mechanical this beast is.
@neutralearth10612 ай бұрын
Thanks! (Craig here) The entire Mellotron tape library is massive, and would require more money than I have to acquire, and if I did, I’d need to buy a separate building to store all of them! I do have the digital M4000D Mellotron with all the extra Sound Cards, so I have most, if not all of the original Mellotron tape library at a fraction of the cost. And they all fit in my hand. I’ll do a video on the M4000D later. And thanks for the open up the Mellotron and show how it works suggestion, I will do that.

@@neutralearth1061 It's wild that the tape is not a continuous loop but rather a spring loaded single fixed length section. I was always baffled that they didn't use a looped cartridge assigned to each key. Thanks for sharing!
@neutralearth10612 ай бұрын
@@hamiltonburger4574 The reason they used the fixed length tape is because most instruments have an initial attack characteristic. If they used a loop, you'd lose that, and it wouldn't sound as authentic.

@joefasula9466 ай бұрын
Thanks for your positive comments on CVO - very much appreciated! Back when we recorded CVO, I was using both a Danelectro & Ibanez 4 string bass. The two primary pedals I used were a Digitech RP255 & a Boss G3. I sparingly used a Boss B3 here and there. All bass parts (and guitar/keyboard) were recorded direct, no amp or mic. No return/send was incorporated. Bass out to efx pedal and into a mixer (Yamaha MG10X) and then the mixer direct to either the M24 or DP32. Sometimes I used the M24 as the mixer into the 32SD. Hope this is helpful. I currently use different pedals, the RP255 blew up. But on all 4 CDs we have released I have recorded all my instruments direct…Cheers!

Thank you! And this, our 1st album has less Mellotron than all of our following recordings! The epic Sigmund's Cat starts as a Frippertronics experiment using the M400 Mellotron 3 Violins/Flute/Cello tapes and adds sounds from my other 3 tape frames and then Joe masterfully adds everything else after that. I would say this album is also more Brian Eno inspired and therefore less proggy. We explore our Prog roots and influences much more on our albums after this one. Thanks for listening! I read Craig’s comment on the fact we are currently working on two new releases, one being “Coma”. We originally recorded the song coma back in HS, as the trio, Eternal Void. EV consisted of both Craig & I, but also my brother, Jeff Fasula. Jeff primarily played bass & some guitar. Unfortunately he has passed from cancer. It dawned on me, although it’s not in the liner notes of CVO, the song Devil’s Workshop 2.0 was originally recorded by EV with Jeff substantially contributing musically. The omission of giving Jeff credit was purely an oversight.
@nx01craig2 жыл бұрын
Jeff certainly created some memorable riffs and fascinating music with us! Eternal Void DNA runs deep in the music of Neutral Earth. I love how we celebrate our E.V. past and honor it with occasional references, song inspiration and new visions of old material when possible.

We will continue this process until we reach 45 minutes! Thanks for listening! Stay tuned!
