I live in the county and the deer that walk through my neighborhood occasionally would argue we live in the country. Don’t let the neighborhood surroundings fool you. This ain’t the city.

@@AverageGuyDoingThings Man you are dodging the point. That's an urban neighborhood, I don't care what it looks like when you leave, you ain't down a dirt road or surrounded by trees.. Deer can venture into the city. The point is that you should probably call the city ( your fire department )and let them know you're doing an open burn like that. Most places would require it.

Make sure it’s legal in your city first. It probably isn’t and the fines are exorbitant. In El Paso, Texas people used to burn their Bermuda grass every year. Every day is windy there. It was messy but okay because there’s a 100 year old city ordinance prohibiting wooden structures and fences. Everything is made of stone, brick or mortar. But I think it’s illegal now. The US Forrest Service learned about wind the hard way in 2022 when they started the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak Fire in New Mexico. Two separate controlled burns that got away and merged into the largest fire in New Mexico history. It burned from the 2nd week of April until the monsoon rains the 3rd week of August. Three counties in Northern New Mexico were force evacuated during May. It was disastrous, 340,000+ acres of grassland, forest, 1000 structures and everything in between destroyed. Fortunately, no fatalities from the fire - that we know of. But several people died in the burn scar floods after the fire. The Forest Service are supposedly professionals in controlled burns. The nasty smell still lingers. We still haven’t fully recovered. I like your videos but this one truly alarmed me. I don’t think you should keep this video up. Some people aren’t too clever and I don’t know where this would be legal. Those are some pretty nice looking mid-century wood framed homes there. Be Safe!

The only thing you really need to watch out for is vinyl fencing and painted fences. Vinyl will melt and discolor. Painted fence will turn a nasty shade of yellow brown. Wood fence are surprising resistant if their treated, but if you do manage to light one on fire you should be more worried about your lungs than the fence 😂
@DryPond-zu9cg4 ай бұрын
Spot on. That is my largest concern. That and some yard lighting I have, but I have not gotten close the vinyl. Will likely cut it down very low, rake it out, wet it and then burn in small scale when I do the larger areas. I have a little experience from my fire service days of controlled burns.

Most people who know nothing about land management will freak out. Truth is. If you're not burning when needed. You don't know what you're doing. Had a fire brigade called for burning my 5 acre field once. Neighbors didn't realize it had never been done in 40 years before my ownership. Next year's field was better than it ever was before.

You call the fire department and let them know you are doing a controlled burn before you start. Some cities you have to have a permit. Must have a hose near by. By giving notice the trucks don't come out when someone smells smoke. Duh.

Its called biochar, its the same reason the amazon is so dense.. the soil there is called terra preta or amazonian dark earth.. it came from thousands of years of Indigenous people burning down controlled areas. Basically the reasoning for doing this is to help the soil retain Nutrients
