Great advice! Early in my career I believed creating distance from my people was beneficial - I was very wrong. There's a fine balance of course but the better you know and care for your people, the easier it is to lead them well. The second point about standards is where you balance everything. If you have the highest standards (for yourself and the team) and live them out, you are the leader regardless of title or anything else.

I left a company I worked for 18 years ten of those years I was actively working a second job and looking for a new job all at the same time. When I found my new opportunity I gave notice and the owner’s son who was now running the company freaked out and called his dad who was on vacation in Greece. The owner called and asked me what he could do to keep me there and I told him that ship had sailed. He did ask me to help run the company until he returned and I agreed. His son however who never had to work for anything in his life didn’t understand the idea that I couldn’t possibly work 16 hours a day when I had moved on and owed my allegiance to my new employer tried to push me to far. I got the work done I had promised and left my key on his desk after my two weeks. I would have given them two or three months of after hours help if the son hadn’t acted like he did.

Mate, thanks for doing this video. I appreciate you spending the time to talk about how hard it is and that it will take time to process and bounce back. A lot of people affected by redundancy, and in fact their friends and family around them, might make the mistake of trying to rush them back into getting back on their feet, forgetting the past and move on, but its clear like any other loss, it us healthier to take the time to grieve. I also like the part about fighting back. I had experience a process where the company made the employees reapply and reinterview for their own roles. Lots of people would not give the company the pleasure of being subjected to this almost humiliating process. However, some would want to fight to get their job back, and thats commendable. Even if they dont succeed, it is a good practice as they embark on searching for jobs in other organisation. Overall, i like your vibe. You dont come across as a snake oil salesman like many others who talk about careers do. Keep it up.

If I summarize this correctly, this is what I’ve learned. 1. Don’t power trip, view yourself in other people’s shoe before coming up with an action. 2. It’s everybody’s effort, not just yours, but be ready to protect them always. Everyone should get a piece of the pie. 3. Have a concise goal for the future so you have an idea on what direction should you take. 4. Being a Leader is a Privilege, not a right. Be sincere and responsible for the duties you carry out. If I miss something, I hope you guys can correct or add to it😁

I lost one of my hardest workers, and it's all my fauIt. I didn't see him as my _best_ employee. I saw him as my _worst_ employee. And by worst, I mean least competent and intelligent. We catered a hypnotist show, and the hypnotist said he would allow one worker to get onstage. I went, and by the time it was over, a teenage attendee said to me, "Hey, guess what? You're an asshoIe." When I asked what that was all about, my colleague explained to me. The hypnotist asked me to share a complex philosophy I have, and I said that hard work doesn't always lead to success. And I used a certain employee (let's call him Tom) as an example. See, I talked about how he was a slow learner. How he went to a small charter school and not the local public high school. How he graduated at 20, not 18. How he didn't have a driver's license, still lived with his mom at 28, and seemed incompetent to do things by himself at work. Apparently I said Tom's only strengths were his choices--dedication and effort. Said the rest of the crew were much better than him and had more skills and brains. The colleague quoted me: "Tom is practically a Ioser, with only his diligence going for him, no natural skills." Tom quit. It seems he doesn't feel comfortable working for someone who doesn't respect or believe in him. And that's the problem. Honestly, I do think Tom's less/lesser. I do think students/graduates from his old school are inferior to the ones from the bigger school. I do think it's just wrong that Tom still lives with his mom. And I can't simply change the perspective; it's automatically in me, glued inside. It's like when you don't specifically know why you're more attractive to blondes than brunettes, you just are...or why you like one movie series more than another, you just do. That's how it is with my perspective of Tom. I know it doesn't make me a bad person, but it does make me a jerk, even in private.
@TeeHaa00323 ай бұрын
Don't be a jerk. I subscribe that. We lost one of our best people because he wanted to open his own passion-project (outgrown hobby). We genuinely wished him good luck and told him that our door will be always open. 18 months later it happens that it doesn't went as good as he hoped and he reapplied, no hard feelings on both sides and we are so very happy to get one great employee back.

Nearly every big company gives the employees numbers. H.R. lifeforms arrange job descriptions into little boxes. Each box is allocated a pay scale. The numbers are slotted into the boxes. This has the advantage that H.R. hardly ever has to think. If a number does exceptionally well, the number in its manager box is very limited in what it can do to reward the exceptional performer. So the exceptional performer leaves.

I have heard once a person said something similar, that he used to loose temper easily and get emotional quickly when things are not following expectations, so he tried to imagine he is watching at himself from a mirror, he has more power of control on himself. He has now became a director of a tech company.
