Julian Woods

Julian Woods is a guitarist, bassist and composer based in London, UK.

Julian is a guitarist, bassist and composer based in London, currently studying a postgraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music. Julian is interested in exploring new and unusual musical colours by making use of microtonality and polystylism in the context of improvised music. A graduate of Oxford University, he was highly active during his time as a student, leading the University Jazz Society house band, and playing in everything from a jazz orchestra to a classical guitar quartet. He has studied with pioneer Philipp Gerschlauer and other microtonal theorists/composers, and is a current student of the Julian Joseph Jazz Academy. Current projects include adapting Arabic and Turkish traditional music and Ives quartertone piano works onto modified guitars, and performing with the London Improvisers Orchestra.

Incredible! Fantastic rendition of one of my all-time favorite compositions. Amazing work -- this deserves a studio recording!! I'd buy it, at least... excited if you've got any more! ❤T

Thanks so much! I'm so glad you like it. I've got some other clips of this trio that I need to filter through and mix audio etc, so there is more to come!

JULIAN this is so good!!! I absolutely love it!!! Is the tuning system JI?

Thanks so much, so glad you’re into it!!! It’s some sort of JI yeah - the fundamental is A and it mostly uses 17/16, 12/11, 7/6, 4/3, 3/2, 18/11, 16/9, 11/6, plus a couple of other bits and bobs. I overdubbed the guitar track on my quartertone guitar so of course I could only approximate some of those intervals, but since it’s a fast tempo I think it works out ok!
