Finally, people like Mark Mills. Thank you! I've also seen former left-wing greenpeace hippies make similar statements ... that we would need to destroy the planet, basically, to reach Net Zero by 2050, and it's not worth it. The population is collapsing, everywhere, anyway. The economies will soon collapse too.

We will end FF additions by 2040. Not debatable with any facts. Peak oil now or next year, and China/India will stop adding coal after next year as well.

I will postulate that generally, 90% of government regulations (laws) produce zero to negative value. Further I would postulate that 99% of lawyers produce zero to negative value.
@dougcard5241Ай бұрын
1. Peak oil is this year or certainly within 4 years. 2. The temp is up .6 C in the last 15 years. 3. All machines are becoming more efficient over time. 4. We are already at over 30% renewables. We were at 9% in 2004. No chance coal survives past mid-century. No chance we don't continue to change to BEVs, and no ICE for ground transport will continue past mid-century either. No facts suggest I am wrong - NONE. Bottom line is this clown is clueless.

Excellent presentation Mark, you provided a brief yet insightful historical context to understand our journey with energy and you put forward the current energy picture, built on facts and data... facts are a beautiful thing. One thing about wind power generation that should be appreciated is that the power generated by a wind turbine is a cubic function of the wind speed, Power = Wind^3 so a slight reduction in wind speed has a massive impact on the power generated.
@CuriousityRulez13 күн бұрын
And imagine the bad weather situation kept getting worse worse. So winds speeds kept raising. That would make my wind driven generators output comparable to one of the smaller nuclear plant for some time. Oh my, oh my, I need to build some peak time storage asap, like a massive gyro for wind gusts and a battery of pressured air tanks. cheers, gotta go build some stuff

Thank you. This was an incredibly insightful conversation. As far as controversy, "Bitcoin will be worth zero in a decade" is my takeaway. Looking forward to the development of a stable coin using block chain for medium of exchange/payment but linked to gold so as to also serve a store of value. Surely broad support among the public and fintech could effectively counter the coalition that professor Calomiris warns is hampering progress and protecting it's vested interests.

a major problem with Tyler's exceptional building restrictions strategy is that historically, we see that it is hard to anticipate what we will value in future. American cities and others around the world knocked down a lot of Victorian architecture. Much of it was not great or worth preserving, perhaps, but we now value that style. People like the San Francisco housing because its rare. Theres a very common brick version of this in the UK, London etc and a lot of it is mediocre.

Part of the problem is that we devalue beauty in North America. Aesthetics needs to be an objective of all new building. But that would require a culture change.

Mr. Mills is an interesting person to listen to. Unfortunately, he misrepresents the facts regarding renewable energy. One has to ask the question: Are these types of presentations targeted at an audience of gullible investors?
@Richard-fm1cx3 ай бұрын
Which aspects?
@chrisconklin29813 ай бұрын
@@Richard-fm1cx First, Mr. Mills presentation is two hours of ramblings. The title is "Energy Transition..." and I get the history of energy, materials, and information. At the thirty minute mark he starts to talk about fossil fuels, saying that EVs will only replace 12% of oil and then presents grossly out of date pie and bar charts. The talk about Germany, LG, and renewable costs if flawed. He discusses the cost of wind turbines as expensive but ignores the drop in price of solar and batteries. Today solar farms are rapidly expanding and matching output of traditional power stations. Beyond that lots of charts on material costs and ultimately data centers. All of this is just a rehash of older presentations and reports. Not mention is climate change or the issue of sustainability. Flash..., proven oil reserves extend only for the next fifty years. Fossil fuel use has peaked. Renewables have won the race.

@@Jason-Spice True for now N--gas/LNG is doing well. Fracked petroleum is low quality and it's wells fade fast. Coal is dead. Do you really think that Saudi Arabia has large reserves? Nuclear is investing in what will be a stranded cash cow. Wind, solar, and geothermal are the future.

I haven’t read the book but not convinced by Bryan’s answer on Bruges (and know 99% won’t be) where just one modern facade would be like a Subway store in Disneyland’s Frontierland .. a vibe killer for millions. The question of how to tackle heritage needs more thought - a major housing problem is a lack of land tax .. perhaps the ideal is higher land tax, with discounts for anything judged to serve community (front yards and gardens especially if open to public day use .. preserving heritage..) rather than outright bans. How such things are judged to serve the community unbiasedly though.. well that’s another problem!

The problem is there is a housing shortage that people complain about, but they voted for the policies(green belts, green space, etc) that created the shortage. They should stop complaining. The people in a HOA, town, city, or county should have a vote on what they want in their neighborhoods. Development policy should be driven by the locals not by state legislatures or federal government pushing "affordable housing". If a majority in a political subdivision want 2 acre minimum lots with a 3000 sq ft min dwelling so be it. The same goes if the majority in the sub division want extreme density. The people that live there should be deciding, not those from off. Plus they have a right to protect their private property values.

The richest people in Palestine, as well as the ones with the most prestige are terrorists. If you aspire to be a billionaire in Palestine, you are far more able to attract money from not just Palestinians, but capital from others all over the world, if you're using that money for the sake of killing Jews, whether in Israel or in the Western World. This of course doesn't lead to an actual state, but it does keep the dream alive. Yaron is right to point out that until that dream dies, there will never be a permanent peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

If I had a chosen theme it is that the Right believes in Personal Responsibility and the Left Believe in Social responsibility. Guns, personal responsibility says you can have the guns and you are responsible not to shoot someone with them and should be punished if you do. Welfare, personal responsibility says you are responsible for getiing yourself out of poverty and any helpbyou receive would be Charity not Forced government charity. You can apply this pretty thoroughly
