We took the half lift geometry measurements & pushrod length before anything was ordered. Then once they turned up put some die on the tip of the valve & rolled the motor over to check the rub mark.

When you installed the roller rockers, did you do a check on the roller pattern on the valve tip. Just to see where the geometry is?
@AussieDoug7 күн бұрын
Certainly did, at half lift its close to 90°
@AussieDoug7 күн бұрын
We put die on the tip of the valve & turned the motor over. Pulled the rockers off and the roller is very close to centre.

Hey Doug who where and why can do a GVM UPGRADE for towing our van
@AussieDougАй бұрын
Seeing ours is in QLD & was already registered we could only do a post rego 10% upgrade. This was done by Transmod in Maryborough. It upgraded due to the weight of the car with all accessories, the van hooked up, fridge in the back & us in the car was at 3000kg. The standard GVM was 2800kg so the 10% made it 3080kg. The GCM does not change.

I'd like to do the cam & springs while it's out. But definitely pulling the mains caps this week. The next local round is on the 27th July, then there's a two month break, so I might get it running for the next one & try order go faster parts for the break.

@karney44m3 ай бұрын
Definitely suggest pulling mains and having them inspected, there would have been a massive upset in balance when the flywheel came apart and the crank almost certainly went around like a skipping rope for a few rotations. New bearings are cheap compared to a catastrophic failure at your next meet. Failing blower belts off the front whip the crank hard enough to mark up bearings, hate to imagine the forces it saw with a rotating mass like this coming apart.
@AussieDoug3 ай бұрын
I had dropped my rev limiter as a just in case. But 100% agree, the whole engine & drivetrain would have bounced like a yoyo. I have a mate coming around one afternoon this week & we will pull the mains.

Share the brand of clutch? I just bought a Button Clutch from NPC
@AussieDoug3 ай бұрын
It's unbranded bought through 4wheelhouse. Good for 700ft/lb torque. www.4wh.com.au/parts/offroad-prime-ceramic-clutch-kit-for-toyota-landcruiser-hj50-hj60-hj75.html
@aaronnoyb3 ай бұрын
My $0.02 worth.... Engine should be fine. SBC's occasionally bend pushrods or pull the rocker studs on a RPM spike, but the video suggests it didn't over rev. Gearbox should be fine as well. If you drop it out, removing the shifter plate gives you a view of nearly all the gears, just gasket goop required to refit. The broken bit at the front is called the front bearing retainer. The failure was all from the clutch slipping, heat is applied at the contact point rapidly, and the steel expands ~5-8% and the cooler outer ring fractures under the force of expansion, being cast, those fracture lines made it disintegrate. For what you do with it, I'd suggest a turbo400 swap, a direct bolt on to that motor. If you want to stay manual, 1HZ (under)powered Toyota Coaster buses had the same gearbox in a RWDrive only format, which would allow you to dump the weight and weakness of the transfer case. Obviously, both of those would require a driveshaft modification to suit. Yes, the driveshaft will be on the piss, other than uni joints lasting 50k k's instead of 150k k's, the shaft doesn't care about the angle. I ran considerably more horsepower and 7200RPM through a T400 and offset Landcruiser diff for years with no issues. If you want an overdrive to drive it to events at a lower cruise RPM, go a 4L80E, there's information/videos on line to make them work without a computer, but as a full manual, without an auto function.
@AussieDoug3 ай бұрын
I had lowered the rev limiter before I went so I couldn't over rev it. I have got a new to me bearing Retainer on the way. As for going auto. It will be between a 4L80 or a T400. If I can find a non computerised 4L80 will work best.
@aaronnoyb3 ай бұрын
@@AussieDoug Unfortunately the 4L80E was never sold as a computer free transmission, the last suitable 4 speed auto transmission, that is computer free, is T700R4, found in VN and VP V8 Commodores, but you'll eat them at Landcruiser weight, regardless what any Extreme Level 5000 transmission builder tells you. If you search "NCR80E" you'll find the simple plug in required for stand alone full manual operation of any 4L80E, they're~$100. Or if you'd prefer to reward the guy who originally designed and released that controller, before it was copied, search for "Jakes Performance 4L80E Control Box". Until the boost bug hits you, you won't break even a stock second hand 4L80E, GM put them behind the 496CI/8.1L big block in school buses and 10k kgs dump trucks. As they're a lock up torque converter, you can have a 4k stall converter, but still cruise at 2k, with the lockup activated. Here's to a flat 10, whichever way you go.
@AussieDoug3 ай бұрын
I spent the weekend looking for a 4L80e with a convertor in my price bracket, haven't been successful yet. Thanks for the info on the control box, it is added to my list. But as for boost I have hamstrung myself by naming the car. I can't go bolting on a turbo kit, what's Supa about that. So it will be a while before I get down that road. The old Troopy is just under 1950kg with 30L of fuel.
