One huge way to grow it is to inspire and teach Irish diaspora globally. Boston College has an Irish Studies program. Imagine if Irish was an elective offered at some high schools in the area. I guarantee people would sign up, especially if the Republic of Ireland really promote it on a diplomatic and cultural scale. Having your own language is incredible. I’m so thankful Estonia fought and kept Estonian alive after centuries of occupation. Also, sing in Irish for Eurovision, that’d be cool! Go Tobann was cute, so there’s potential for better songs and results.

The great ballad singers are gone. Chieftains and The Dubliners. These guys have picked up the torch. They’ve made The Irish language and Hip Hop cool again. Very intelligent and articulate guys. Don’t think they will win an Oscar for the film because if their support of Palestine but they have a chance for best song. Would love to see them perform it at the ceremony.

@sit-insforsithis1568 In 1897, President William McKinley signed a treaty with representatives of the Republic of Hawaii to annex the islands. The U.S. Congress passed the Newlands Resolution in 1898, authorizing the annexation, and Hawaii became a U.S. territory on August 12, 1898. In 1959, Hawaii became the 50th U.S. state after a referendum in which 93% of Hawaii voters supported statehood. The decision to grant statehood was influenced by Hawaii's importance in World War II and lobbying by members of Congress during the Civil Rights Movement. In. 1850, Hawaiians and Part Hawaiians constituted 98% of the population.

I love what theyre doing, theyre bringing a change to the language thats slowly been trudging to its death in the last century. Theyre making it interesting for people to speak it in a way it hasnt been in the education system. The rialtas needs to take a look and do something to change how our beautiful language is taught

We need a rapper who raps in Anglo Saxon, as we speak a hybrid language of AS , French and others, so Ireland and Wales are lucky to have so many who speak a native language. Cheers from Mercia ( I'm also part Scot and Irish)

people kept quiet because:- - fear - pride - lies - fear of change - ignorance - “stockholm syndrome” - poverty in ireland at the time - too difficult + too inconvenient to admit this was going on - too much power from the catholic church - too much power from the gards (police) who were backing the catholic church - too much power from the media to keep it quiet - too much power from the government to keep it quiet this type of fear, pride + not admitting to ourselves that some things are rotten in ireland still exits as for the example, in the recent election in ireland, so many people still just went + voted most of the same politicians back in, despite there being deep social problems in ireland at the moment, which successive governments have both created and ignored. note it was not just women who suffered, men suffered too. the film “song for a raggy boy” a good watch. the gards are a very “unique police force” too and have a lot to answer for. these were the people who came out of that tradition that happily sided with the brits pre-independence against the irish people and in the civil war too, when so many irish were executed during the civil war, for daring to question if the treaty achieved was correct or not. now im not going to into what side of the civil war was right or wrong, but the fact is that there is a deep tradition in ireland of people given power to crack down very heavily, brutally and viciously on our own on anyone who dares speak out + not tow the line. that same tradition of brutality by irish people on their own happened during the famine too, where some irish people were given power and authority by the brits to use it brutally against their own to keep the irish quiet and their mouths shut to go and starve in quiet. and today still, the gards (police) side heavily with the irish state and crack down brutally on irish people who dare to speak out, dissent or protest.

5:29 worth noting that historically people didn't learn a new language in a structured theoretical way, it would often be from learning poetry and songs that they establish familiarity. Verses are one of the oldest, most powerful ways to pass on information.

As a Basque, and a big fan of Ireland, I'm happy to hear that some interest is being drawn to the Gaelic language, which is a treasure that all the Irish people should nurture. I know that making modern music that appeals to the youth is key for that, as has been the case over here since the Basque language began its revival around the 80s. However, I must say that I profoundly dislike the American Hip Hop culture, and I wouldn't like a potential revival of Gaelic to be linked to it. I sincerely hope that the success of these lads will encourage musicians from _all_ the genres to pursue a more Irish friendly path. Besarkada handi bat Euskaditik Irlandara!

The story of Hebrew is amazing, but it's not ideal in comparison with the situation of Irish. Hebrew had died out as an a home language around 200 CE. It continued as a liturgical language from which modern Hebrew was derived. That's a bit like a community deciding to speak Latin and learning latin from De Bello Gallicum and the writings of Publius Ovidius Naso, then constructing all the new words for like "downloadable content", and "mobile phone charger cable". A better point of comparison might be Hawaiian, which after decades of suppression was on the brink of extinction as a spoken language in the 80s where there were only a handful of speakers left, all of whom were over 40. They started Hawaiian language immersion pre-schools with the elders who still spoke the language.

Genuinely, the people complaining about Irish being made an official language are fucking full of shit. They remind me of bigots here in the USA (edit: As I'm watching further into the video, people complaining about the band themselves seem like bigots too tbh, like I can just imagine an Ameircan scenario where you have some crankly old man saying you're Anti-American 💀, guess bigots really do only come in one flavor ig)

Black American. I have started learning the language a few months back due to some Scottish and Irish ancestry. I know the history between those countries and the UK is wild...especially on Ireland's end. But I'm happy to see so many fight to keep their culture alive as it should be. Hip Hop always had its roots in spreading a message, sometimes that's been lost over the years but if you seek a resonating message you can find it in the Genre. Good on KC for taking the path. ✊🏿
