Yes, there certainly is a shortage! There is a shortage of teachers who are white, female, inexperienced, and in their 20s. Apparently, everyone else need not apply. Schools seem to never get enough of the white and female demographic of educators. Schools would have a lot more teachers if there weren't so much RACISM and AGEISM in the hiring practices. There are also far too many requirements to become a teacher. The requirements are insane. First, you need a degree in education. Then you'll need to pass EXPENSIVE exams (Praxis exams) to get your teacher's license. Then you'll need student teaching internships and practicum experiences. Thereafter, you'll need recommendations from principals who've actually OBSERVED you teaching. And if that isn't enough, to beat out competition at the most desirable schools (not the underfunded schools where no one wants to teach), you'll need to either be well connected or have years of experience. The last time that I was interviewed for a teaching job, there were FOUR PEOPLE interviewing me just to teach first grade, and that was just the first round. I was told that if the first goes well, then there would be two more interviews. <-----THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE NO TEACHERS. Teaching is challenging enough! Why put teacher candidates through so much scrutiny just to teach little kids? People running for president, the highest office in America, aren't even put through this much investigation. EASE UP ON YOUR REQUIREMENTS. What's worse, the teaching industry is wrought with so much politics, job discrimination, hiring bias, prejudice, and RACISM especially against teachers of color. Notice the better the schools are, the less diversity you see in the classrooms. This is not by coincidence. It's also not a coincidence in the worst schools is where you'll find teachers and principals of color concentrated. That is because black administrators and educators only get hired by one another! No one else hires black people to do anything in their buildings, except substitute teach temporarily or clean the building. It's PATHETIC. As a former teacher of color, I didn't want to be limited to schools that are overcrowded, run down, and underfunded, simply because I'm an American-American educator. I should not be restricted to these types of dilapidated schools for a teaching opportunity. It isn't fair!

The complaints are all the same in every single “I quit teaching” video: low pay, no opportunities for advancement, politics in schools, bad administration and student behavior. Just fix those things.

I looked for a teaching job for years (have a masters in education) while subbing. I got turned down due to schools having to pay me more bc I was more qualified. The district I subbed for didn't want to lose me as a highly qualified sub and passed me up for a full time gig. After that I gave up trying to teach in America and went overseas.

I once filled out an application that was 27 repetitive pages long. The damn site kept timing out. I decided I would never fill out another application that required me to re-enter the same information on education and job history twice. It should not take hours to apply for one open position. A piss poor application setup like that makes me think the district is run just as poorly. That district to this day is constantly short of teachers. I can’t imagine why…🙄

I love how they left off the fact that teachers have little to no say concerning their classrooms. I mean how can you ensure equality of outcome when students can not read in 9th grade, can not speak any English, are overly apathetic, or simply can not be bothered to show up? Inclusion has its place, but you can not consistently aspire to equity under the restrictions put in place in a classroom of 25. I manage better than most and it wears you down.
