why no thread protection is put on the lower casing as per illustration video i your website
@VolantProducts
@VolantProducts 4 ай бұрын
Good question. Volant safety nubbins or thread protectors safeguard packer cups, aid in CRTi stabbing and help protect the coupling end face, threads, and shoulder. Their use is recommended, but when the rig is well aligned, the casing connection isn’t sensitive to CRTi stabbing or nubbins aren't available, operators/TRS providers may choose not to use them. A benefit of this is reducing personnel activity in the red zone.

WHILE I HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE IN MANY MECHANICAL FIELDS,I KNOW LITTLE ABOUT THE OIL PATCH! HOWEVER THIS LOOKS LIKE A MUCH SAFER SYSTEM OF DOING CASING INSTALLATION AND REMOVALS! IS THERE A SIMILAR SYSTEM FOR HANDLING THE DRILL STEM AND TOOLS?

+VolantProducts What is the pint of the ring that they are installing with the pneumatic tool in the first sequence? Do you need different CRTis for different casing sizes? Do the 5-6 pads expand to grip the ID of the casing? What is the use for the silver threaded adapter that they remove when the casing is in the slips?
@VolantProducts
@VolantProducts 9 жыл бұрын
+epistte Some good questions! The ring installed in the connection box provides a shoulder that increases torque capacity. One base CRTi can be configured with Volant's patented grip system to run several different casing sizes. Details are available in the resource section of our web site www.volantproducts.ca/resources/ under 'specification summaries'. The pads, or dies, expand radially to to grip the pipe body without engaging the threads, and the silver threaded adapter is an optional steel thread protector that keeps the threads clean and prevents damage that could result from extreme misalignment.

+VolantProducts Thanks for those answers. I do no work in the oil patch. I'm just a mechanical engineer who love to learn about the technology used in other fields. I live in the Utica shale of Ohio but I've never been up close on a rig.

Something not mentioned is that this is the first time this rig ran the tool. They run roughly 10 jts per hour on this rig, but there is no NPT for fill and circulate, and if there if trouble, it can be addressed without delay.

The main advantages are improved safety (by reducing number of people and pieces of equipment on the rig floor), improved efficiency (by packaging casing make-up, fill/circulate, and hoisting in a single tool), and the abiltiy to rotate while running casing.
