You've achieved a remarkably fine transfer of an old Angel LP. I wonder what the British EMI pressing would sound like. What noise reduction software do you use?
@ly77620 сағат бұрын
I use Audacity on a Macbook for the original recording. I take the raw file and transfer it to an old PC that has Magix Sound cleaner (now in Sound Forge I think.) I use it mainly to take out ticks and crackling- which there wasn't much of on this record. I then move it back to Audacity on the Mac. Mostly I focus on re-equalizing and volume fixes. I try to minimize using noise reduction on Audacity as it makes things tinny or flat if overdone. In the original digital transfer, Audacity compresses from the loudest bit of the record - which might be a needle drop or a pop. So those noises have to be removed. There is adjusting to do on volume and equalization afterwards to get it back to sounding more like the record. Also I routinely do a high pass at about 15khz which is for reducing rumble. When I make the video, I have to do one final check on volume. For mono records the music is almost always too quiet on Imovie, requiring about a 50% volume increase.

Bolet's 1953 version piano playing is absolutely phenomenal. The recording of the orchestra was very poor. Bolet's keyboard color came through very clearly in the 1953 version. I am going to purchase his 1973 recordings and have a good listen and report back. Even on KZbin Bolet's pianism is beyond reproach for me.
@ly7764 күн бұрын
The tempo that Cox uses is very slow which I think made it harder for Bolet to make subtle dynamic changes. And the piano in the 1953 version was a Baldwin which is the piano he preferred. This is a Bechstein. Finally, in 1953 the Cincinnati Orchestra was at the top of its game and I think simply better than this one.

Have you remastered the recording during the transfer? The sound quality is very good for a LP transfer. As a horn player, can I take a moment to say how outstandingly brilliant the horn section of the Cleveland Orchestra was under Szell and section leader Myron Bloom (from 1954-77). 🎉 This recording demonstrates this so well. The Conn 8D favoured by the horn section had a very distinctive tonal quality with a broad acoustic profile. Szell was known to be an exacting task master, but one cannot help but notice and appreciate the utmost precision of the orchestra's playing on his recordings. He had a way of just letting the music speak for itself. Thank you very much for this upload!

As far as I'm concerned..... If you are trying to keep your collection small(ish) and want only one recording, this is ab out as good as it gets. If you want a few more, then Gilels/Jochum is just as good. By the way, your transfer from what is almost certainly a rather noisy Odyssey pressing, is near perfect.

I met Kurt at the Hungarian Pastry Shop on Columbus Avenue in 1987. We were friends for two years while I was a grad student. He lived in the neighborhood and ate regularly at Tom's Diner (pre-Seinfeld era). I never heard him play, but he did have two pianos in his apartment and I know that he played them. He also told me he taught Thomas Mann's daughter piano. And he had theories about flute playing. We talked a lot about 20th century history and modern literature. I only ever found one album of his. So thank you for sharing this. I have always felt incredibly honored to have been friends with him, including holiday meals. He was a kind and sweet person and a great raconteur. I understand that the New Yorker had a piece on him when he passed away.

Very fine, with pungent brass. The sound quality, from 1957 (UPDATE: 1965!), is excellent, which caught me a little off guard.

Yes it is excellent, being a sealed record helped. You also caught my typo that I missed, as this should have been 1965 not 1957. I had it correct in the description but not in the title. Now it's fixed. Thanks!

In October 1957 the performers made this recording in mono only in Paris. In October of 1958 the performers made the better-known stereo version in London. So you have uploaded a rarity. Dennis Brain actually died on September 1, 1957, before this recording was made.

I agree. I have no idea why Everest chose the cover, other than to try and grab attention. The image makes no sense. The allusion to the America and the 4th of July (I am guessing) is wrong as the piece is not celebratory or American themed. The carousel horse I presume has some relation to Estancia. In any case, the 1950s were filled with outrageous, and creative album covers. Some, however, were ridiculous.

@@ly776 Oh, no doubt it was provocative or profound... but it's just Tinker Toys. Some years ago I bought a "coffee table book" that featured the art on LP albums. Most of them were European and holy cow were they bizarre and creepy. On the other hand, I've seen plenty of classical album covers that look as if the photographer had gone, "oops! We forgot to take a picture of Carlo-Maria Giulini and Sviatislov Richter, sitting in hotel conference room chairs backwards posing to look as if they were considering the finer points of Brahms Concerto #1. I suppose album covers are kind of a niche skill and market.

Thanks for downloading. I used to listen to my dad's record of this, and despite the unfortunate truncations such as in the march, things like the Polonaise (33.00) are incomparable, with so much swagger and fizz that it makes other versions sound pedestrian in comparison. Exhilarating!!

I love this performance. Do you recall the turntabled and cartridge used for this transfer?
@ly7762 ай бұрын
5 years ago...I probably was using a Sota Moonbeam turntable (it had a Rega 202 arm) and a Shure V15VxMR cartridge. But it's possible the turntable was my ancient Connoisseur BD2A with the same cartridge. The original Westminster Labs LPs such as this one were very quiet because they spaced the grooves more widely so there was zero bleed through - but they held less music. At 27 minutes this is about as long as you got for two sides.
@robertpincus65282 ай бұрын
Interesting! The best sound I ever got from a Shure (M97X) was on a Conrad Johnson Sonograph table, which used the same tonearm. Microridge is the best sounding of all styli, or at least that's been my experience. Do you still use a Shure?
