This is presumably a modern replica. It looks like it was churned out on inanimate CNC machinery relatively recently. It certainly doesn't look like an old car. I wonder what happened to the original with all its irreplaceable patination and hard won battle scars? What a sad loss. (Or could this be another example of resto-destruction?)

I remember seeing a merlin V12 in a car as long as this one starting up near moorabbin airport in melbourne it was so loud that you really needed to have earplugs and earmuffs or earphones to block out the sound, plus the vibrations were such you could feel it though your body ,doing the shaking and twist. 👌👌🦘🦘✌✌ Plus it would have more hp compared to the fuels used back then, cleaner and more per per cubic inch compared to the fuels used way back then IMHO so maybe around 20 hp extra and also they would be self lubing as well because of the oils in the fuels, i wonder what additives they used to make sure the chambers are lubed? 👌👌🦘🦘✌✌

Fascinating, however not very well filmed,you weren't shown exactly what they were doing. Also no commentary so even if you could see you still didn't know what was going on. Very amateurish, a pity because it could have been so much better.

Ah, now THAT'S a "don't stick your hand in there, stupid!" device if I ever did see one. What an unusual engine, but 40 horsies was a shitton of power in 1906 so if it works it works, I guess.

It would have been better with narration. I think he was getting one of the pistons to TDC before engaging the starter. Also, turning the engine over prior to start spread oil on the walls of the cylinders to make the starting easier and provide some protection to the cylinder walls. But I am just guessing and would have liked an explanation.

may be it's because a limey trys to start a german engin? even an effing lanz bulldog is started quicker - and on that vehicle you have to use a petroleum torch. get lost. engine polished like the tories but likewise no ignition.

This was done on Sunday, the showcase day at Pebble Beach, and while the requirement is that all cars be functional and must be driven onto the course under their own power for the day, it was started up as a demonstration for those present a few times during the day. With 21+litres, in a 100+ year old FOUR cylinder engine, everything conspires to make it a circus act to pull off. I don't know the compression ratio on that engine, but given the displacement my guess is that it is pretty low, at least by today's standards. What fuel were they using in 1909, vs what is available in the 21st Century? LOTS of reasons to sit back and marvel at the fact that its speed on the beach, at 140mph wasn't matched even by an airplane for nearly ten years.
