The Golden Driller is a 76-foot-tall (23 m), 43,500-pound (19,700 kg) statue in Tulsa, Oklahoma, depicting an oil worker. The structure is a steel frame covered with concrete and plaster. It is the seventh-tallest statue in the United States and has been located in front of the Tulsa Expo Center since 1966. An inscription at the base of the statue reads: "The Golden Driller, a symbol of the International Petroleum Exposition. Dedicated to the men of the petroleum industry who by their vision and daring have created from God's abundance a better life for mankind."

CAHOKIA - CITY OF THE SUN Cahokia was the largest prehistoric Indian community in America north of Mexico. It covered an area of six square-miles, including at least 120 mounds of different sizes and function. Initial occupation during Late Woodland times (AD 700-800) included small settlements along Cahokia Creek. These expanded and merged during early Mississippian times (AD 800-1000) and the population and community increased, reaching a peak between AD 1050-1150 with an estimated population of 10-20,000. A period of change and population decline began in the 1200s and by AD 1350-1400, Cahokia had been abandoned. Indians of the Mississippian culture built this community and many other large and small ones throughout the Mississippi floodplain and the adjacent uplands. Cahokia was the center of a large complex chiefdom that had ceremonial and trade connections to other Mississippian sites throughout the Midwest and Southeast. The decline of Cahokia may be attributed to a combination of many factors, including depletion of resources in the region; internal social and political unrest; external friction and conflicts with other groups; climate changes affecting crops and local floral and fauna; soil exhaustion due to intensive agriculture; and loss of control and influence over contemporary sites and groups. MONKS MOUND Monks Mound is the largest prehistoric earthwork in the Americas. Its base covers over 14 acres, and it rises to a height of 100 feet. It contains an estimated 22 million cubic feet of earth, all hand-carried in baskets from the many borrow pits throughout the Cahokia site. It was not built all at once, but in a series of stages, mostly from AD 950-1200. Core-drillings through the mound suggest eight to 14 building stages. Excavations at various locations found indications of a stairway on the South Ramp; several buildings and a small mound rebuilt eight times on the First Terrace; evidence of a French chapel and historic Indian occupation (1730’s) on the First Terrace; and the discovery of the Birdman Tablet on the east side of the mound. Recent tests confirm that the First Terrace was a late addition to the front of the mound and drilling deep beneath the Second Terrace encountered a large mass of stone cobbles whose function is unknown at this time. The Mississippians were also doing soil engineering, selecting and placing specific soils for strength or drainage. It is called Monks Mound because a group of French Trappist Monks lived on a nearby mound from 1809-1813 and planted gardens, fruit trees and wheat on the terraces of this mound.

Our neighbors had one back in the early 60s. They set it up in front of their picture window and it had a flood light with a rotating multi-color wheel that would shine on it and change it from, red, blue and green.

ALUMINUM CHRISTMAS TREES: A SYMBOL OF THE SPACE AGE In the 1960s, aluminum Christmas trees captured the excitement of the modern Space Age. Today, they are seen as fun, retro decorations, but they once represented futuristic holiday décor. The first successful aluminum tree, the Evergleam, was introduced in 1959 by the Aluminum Specialty Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Its popularity led to many brands offering trees in various colors and sizes. However, by the late 1960s, interest began to decline. The Evergleam was discontinued in the early 1970s - after nearly a million were made. Some historians believe the 1965 TV special "A Charlie Brown Christmas" played a role in this shift by promoting traditional symbols. Ultimately, Americans moved on to new decoration trends. This exhibit features 20 aluminum trees from the collection of Johnson County residents Steve and Mary Pruitt. Their festive decor can be seen throughout the front yard and inside the All-Electric House until January 4, 2025!

The Kit-Cat Klock is an art deco novelty wall clock shaped like a grinning cat with cartoon eyes that swivel in time with its pendulum tail. It is traditionally black, but models in other colors and styles are also available. It is a common symbol of kitchens in North American popular culture. The first clock was an idea by Earl Arnault (1904 - 1971), then created and physically prototyped by Clifford Stone (1908-1986) in 1932 and manufactured by the Allied Manufacturing Company, which was owned by Stone, in Portland, Oregon. Allied subsequently moved to Seattle, Washington, in the early 1940s and then to southern California in 1962, whereupon it was renamed California Clock Company. The clock's design has changed little in the intervening years, with the first generation, manufactured from the 1930s-early 1950s having two paws and no bow tie, and newer models having four paws and a bow tie. In the 1960s genuine crystals were added as accents to some clocks. The words "Kit-Cat" were added to the clock's face in 1982. The original clocks were AC-powered, but due to scarcity of American-made AC motors, the clock was redesigned for battery power in the late 1980s. The manufacturer estimates that an average of one clock has been sold every three minutes for the last 50 years. Kit-Cat Klocks are frequently seen in movies, commercials, TV and advertising. The California Clock Company has also made several other animated clocks, including a teddy bear, a panda, a poodle and an owl. The name "Kit-Cat" is a trademark of California Clock Company.
