The clean method: Put cotton balls in a small zip lock bag. Add dollops of Vaseline. Close bag and knead the jelly into the cotton, making sure not to saturate the balls -- you need some dry fibers to catch the spark. Leave in bag until needed for use.

This is called "Ed's Red" . It's been around a long time and works great, but you should omit the acetone when when working with polymers. I've used it on polymer guns and never had a problem, though I stopped the practice. Frankly, kerosene on it's own works pretty well.

Is the Transmission fluid like a "rust preventive"??
@laptopdragon4 жыл бұрын
ATF is a wild group of chemicals and serves many puroposes. From excessivly rusted bolts, it's been tested to outperform the most expensive "rust-breakers" on the market for a fraction of the cost. So it has a lot of good qualities but from what I've read is to never touch it, and I think it also breaks down plastic and rubber, or certain types of plastic/rubber. but never touch it (like asetone) it's poisonous and over time may cause long term life shortening health concerns.

@ 1:30 you mention that acetone is good for removing plastic. Probably not a good choice for anything with plastic/rubber parts, like a tactical rifle, a polymer framed handgun, or anything with plastic furniture. I use 1/3 each of ATF, mineral spirits and low-sulfur diesel. Works just fine. In a pinch, Marvel Mystery Oil works, too.
@humansvd32693 жыл бұрын
I'd use marvel first.

For those of you into automotive mechanics. substitute one quart of engine oil for Dextron ll trans oil and add to the engine . Marvel Mystery oIL is nothing more than Dextron trans ll fluid.

@arthursmith6437 жыл бұрын
sun Tao Simple Green and hot water is recommended by many gunsmiths. Use 9 parts hot water and 1 part SG. Never mind all these chemicals. Toss the gun that has been field stripped in a tub of the solution for a few minutes. Toothbrush scrub rinse with hot water. Dry and lube. You can use a hair dryer to dry the gun or put the barrel and slide in a hit oven to dry. Do not out in the polymer frame.

I watched on another video where they lashed two sticks together and held it over a fire. The plastic tightened up like heat-shrink tubbing for a rock solid hold. I suppose you have to be careful not to actually melt the cordage. That could be useful for lashing a knife onto a stick to make a spear or making arrows.

You can leave out the Acetone, which is destructive to plastics, composites and finishes on wood stocks/hardware, unless you're cleaning plastic wadding out of barrel.
