This has been my favorite recording of these dances. I love how Arnold wrote "Shave and a Haircut" as the coda of the first movement.

It seems that the pitch is around 450hz, so the recording is most probably reproducing too fast, which makes the pitch go up and speeds up the tempos. Would love to hear a 442 version of this:-))) Chaotic AND full of life and individual characters, love it:-))))

Thie "original" manuscript of this quartet is not found in the Royal Library in Brussels, which possesses a manuscript copy of Haydn's Cassation in C for lute, violin and cello, a trio. A modern edition of the lute quartet was published, edited by Hans Dagobert Bruger (Wolfenbüttel: Zwissler, 1924). The later published scores are arrangement for guitar rather than lute.

@@MrVektriol Beats me, I never forced myself to listen to the whole Demon. Just know the famous aria and the real lezginka. 🙂 Probably some other number from the Demon. If memory serves, Anton liked writing longish pieces, so there must be a lot of material there . . . But the real reason we know this is not the real thing is because lezginka is a fiery dance, and this episode is lyrical, so clearly Naxos production crew made an error. I recorded for them, they are very very good, but they publish massive numbers of CDs, so errors are understandable.

Many years ago in Winnipeg I was coming into my teacher's house for a Saturday afternoon lesson. As I descended the stairs to the basement I heard the opening lines of Dunbarton Oaks - the duo piano compilation - with my teacher Edward Lincoln on one 7.5 grand and his partner John Melnyk on the other 7.5 . They were glorious - the air was charged with electricity. And this Chamber Orchestra is exquisite - Dumbarton Oaks has the Oaks murmering and humming. Stravinsky was an extreme talent. Thank-you for this submission.

@@tylerwhoisafanoffanstrains9246 I didn't know it but know Gaite P. well. Maybe the close mic'ing of the orchestra does the orchestration a disservice. Or maybe I was judging these melodies against their original settings or the standard arrangements of the overtures which seem to have more delicate scoring. Nonetheless, an interesting posting of this rarely heard compilation. Rosenthal certainly did his share in keeping Offenbach's great melodies in front of the public.
