Just imagine if Nintendo did buy Rareware in 2002 Banjo/Conker, Kameo, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark would all be 1st party Nintendo franchises with Killer Instinct and Battletoads being Multiplatform.

Sakurai is great at making games and directing Smash Bros... But he's horrible at handling criticism, PR and reading the room. The last thing you wanna do when fans are disappointed that their favorite character and franchise is left out is to antagonize them.

One thing I understand about japanese businessmen is they are haters. Rare came out of Europe and realased nothing but gold for the n64. They carried the system. Rare reinvented donkey kong and gave us diddy kong. A non japanese company is coming into their house and kicking ass. There HAD to be some jealousy.

I heard Rare wanted to make bigger budgets games, but Nintendo didn't want to budge on what they were giving. So Rare wanted to find another company that would. Several companies put in bids. Initially, it looked like Activision was going to win, but the deal fell apart. Then, Microsoft came in and gave them a deal they couldn't refuse. I ask myself, with a lot of the staff gone by this time, could Rare have been saved? I say no. I think Nintendo knew they weren't going to be useful in the future, so they cashed in like a low budget sports team letting their key player walk and getting a better draft pick. It turned out to be the right move in the end. I see there are those who argue Nintendo wanted a Japanese company, I don't think so. It's possible that with Hiroshi Yamauchi and Minoru Arakawa retiring that this happened, but I don't think so.
