As someone who drinks mate on the regular, I give you an A for effort, but there's a bunch of beginner mistakes. Removing the dust isn't something you need to do. Throwing out the first mate is talking about spitting out the first fill of water. Also, Rosamonte isn't exactly one of the best brands for beginners due to it being stronger. I would recommend Cruz de Malta for any first timer. And make sure you don't steep all the leaves at once. When you have the mound, there should be some leaves that are still dry. Only start steeping them when the mate is losing flavor.
