@nigiltor14862 ай бұрын
@@ninjutsudojo yes, kendo is based on the ancient schools of kenjutsu, but it should be taken into account that kendo is a sport discipline with a narrow focus on duels with shinai. Ninjutsu includes a more diverse arsenal of techniques aimed at more complex tasks, such as stealth, work with various types of weapons and military tactics. The difference in application makes them very different, even if in some aspects similar elements can be found

Ninjas (or Shinobi) were spies deployed to collect information. Although many of them were also warriors and even samurai, being a ninja oftentimes has nothing to do with fighting, and more to do with looking normal while you extract information from the enemy or an object of interest. The mythic ninja in black clothes with throwing knives and smoke bombs is a misconception born from Japanese traditional plays, where people in charge of the "special effects" wore full black clothing so they didn't interrupt the actors on stage.

Both weapons have their uses, such as the Longsword being one of the most versatile weapons in the world since it was good at stabbing, slashing, and even bludgeoning if used in the proper stance. Meanwhile, the Katana was made to cut through lighter material such as paper and bamboo, not exactly the best at stabbing but it could do in a pinch, and if one were to try and bludgeon another with it, it would fail horribly. Both are fantastic weapons, and serve the purpose they are given well.
@ninjutsudojo Жыл бұрын
Very true. Honestly it depends what kind of katana you're talking about. Historically katana took many different shapes. It's only thanks to the Tokugawa that a rather homogenous model was imposed.
@UnknownSovereignty Жыл бұрын
"Paper and bamboo" Why do people always give inaccurate descriptions of katanas. They are meant to slice flesh. They didn't have to worry about people in chain mail and plate armor.
@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 Жыл бұрын
wtf are you on about? They were meant to kill people, not meant for cutting competitions. You clearly know very little about katana and I wouldn’t be surprised if you genuinely believe longswords were made of spring steel too.

Do you have any formal training in Japanese swordsmanship? because all I can see is a katana being wielded like a long sword here, zero Japanese techniques and the overall fighting style is completely wrong......
@ninjutsudojo Жыл бұрын
Yes, I have quite a bit of training in kenjutsu. I'll address each of your points individually: "because all I can see is a katana being wielded like a long sword here" The European long sword and the Japanese katana are functionally quite similar to each other. They are both long, two-handed pieces of sharp metal. So, it's natural that there are similarities in how these weapons are used effectively. "zero Japanese techniques" Then I have to say, your knowledge of kenjutsu is quite limited. In this video you can clearly see many kenjutsu techniques, like kiri age, uke nagashi, kesa giri, kasumi no kamae, gedan no kamae, juuji giri, etc. etc. "the overall fighting style is completely wrong" Considering that the overwhelming majority of kenjutsu schools do not spar, much less spar against other arts, I'm not sure where you're deriving this opinion from. Maybe kendou? In any case, you are of course entitled to your opinions. Thanks for sharing.

interesting to see how the longsword user prefers to keep the sword high, and the katana prefers to keep it low
@DevinAswani Жыл бұрын
I am no means knowledgeable but I believe it’s due to the difference between a sabre and a blade. With the katana it’s rounded edge and extended length gives advantages to long slashes to deal more damage whereas with the long sword quick strikes and jabs between the opponent’s armour is it’s specialty.
@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 Жыл бұрын
@@DevinAswani being used for anti-armor thrusts was not the longsword’s specialty. It was something that was possible but you’d need very narrow blade variations and a whole lot of luck to find success. An estoc/tuck is a real specialized sword where the longsword is generally more of a compromise.
