Probably would not have split apart if staid a Dutch Colony until it became independent. Contrarily to Brazil there was no attempt to restore proper Dutch, Holland being already too distant culturally when the Boers created they republics. The people who came to SA were many farmers (boeren) coming from the province of Zeeland, so their Dutch wasn't the Dutch spoken in Amsterdam or Den Haag. That's why in Suid Afrikaans the word for we = ons, the same as in the Zeeuws dialect. Also the oo and ee combination is different pronounced from in standard Dutch.
