I have both versions of this. The one split into to books called Lands and People. The one book edition has some atrocious illustrations that were corrected in the second version.

Ultimately, I'm ambivalent on stat bonus/penalties because that's often the sticking point, you can easily do something else with bonuses and have races feel unique without it touching a nerve wrt racial essentialism. So whatever, I'll use it for a quick game, but if someone doesn't like it, its fine, it's taken out Personally I don't like stereotyping just because it's lazy, but never mind if other players do, it's their game and it's up to them to explain how their particular character are the way they are within the context of the setting. However, for longer adventures and campaigns I believe whether you're running on fantasy stereotypes or not, the background setting ought to back it up. Where does this particular half-orc come from? If it's in a warband sure, lean into the stereotype. Are they from a sleepy, kind village that took them in and raised them as a human? Of course the stereotype doesn't fit. Generally I prefer being selective about stereotyping, so for longer campaigns I like make it a big deal encountering certain playable races, I love making elves or dwarves feel alien to humans. As such I sometimes give players a human-only rule or exclude certain racial options until they actually make contact with those groups. They spend time doing quests, doing anthropological surveys or building relations with those groups, and as a result they are unlocked for the party to use. This usually does really well in establishing players how they should play the character if they choose to be an elf, since they know exactly which settlement they come from, why they're out adventuring, the fact they may be drinking beer for the first time in a tavern, all sorts

I think morale and reaction rolls are almost the best bits of the game PS and then monsters like undead and berserkers, who do fight to the death, stand out
@elfbait37744 күн бұрын
Morale is a great rule and one of those that, like you said, gets forgotten along with the encounter reaction rules. This then leads to the misconception that all old-school play was just kick in the door, kill monster, and take their stuff. It is very possible using both morale and reaction to avoid or shorten combats altogether.

I never read the Morale Rules but since I played Warhammer Fantasy, I now, choose to make my monsters flee! (Which would never happened in the past!)

I had one player who could not stand the idea of enemies not fighting to the last. I never understood his opposition to the idea of failed morale.

I don't know your player, but I wonder if it could be because it complicates the morality of the situation. What was clear cut self-defense turns into a dilemma

OSE combines basic and expert in OSE classic (like the pictured showed). OSE advanced adds the other classes in.
@yeoldegeek714 күн бұрын
Yep, advanced also uses various optional rules - some we use, some we don't. As I have the boxed set with the 9 small books I don't differentiate so much though, it's all just 'OSE' to me.

After a visit to the Feywilde, each of my player’s characters were left changed by some mischevious faeries. These mild curses were actually embraced by the players! Copper coins are now indistinguishable from gold coins to one player, everything another one eats now tastes like chicken. Cats now sound like howling goblins to a third. Great fun and so far none of the players have tried to get the curses removed, they are proud reminders of their visit to the other side! 😅

Half-ogres (also called ogrillons) can also result from ogres mating with other humanoids such as orcs, hobgoblins and bugbears. As monsters, they can be useful as tough enemies in early campaigns. In our current game, an ogrillon is next on our dwarf’s hitlist (a homebrew class based on Warhammer Slayers that must defeat ever larger enemies or die trying.

YOG, I started playing dungeons and dragons in 1978 and I have a vague memory of the “satanic panic“. My impression is that because of the sensational nature of some of theCircumstances, the legend has outgrown the reality of its impact at the time. Also, while I think the mother of the young man who committed suicide was wrongheaded, it’s easy to imagine how trying to grapple with the pain of a child’s suicide might drive one to try to find a reason, any reason, in order to make sense of the event.

White Plume Mountain. That was the first adventure I ever played in. Saying that game was "Dungeons and Dragons" would be quite a stretch, but it was fun in a way that didn't just open the door to gaming for me, it kicked it off the hinges.

Love the skull with three eye sockets and fangs. Satanic panic never really took root where I was in Canada on the east coast. I think I saw the Tom Hanks movie at the time, on tv, Mazes and Monsters. Not a very good movie was our verdict. Don't Like Dickens??!? My goodness. My Little brother loved Boot Hill but it was full on murder hobo with no magical healing. Everyone was wanting to be Clint Eastwood, but most of them ended up as Eli Wallach. the party tended to be wiped out in the first half hour. Stephen King's Gunslinger series has a Boot Hill feel with a mystical, magical element. Love the idea of just trying things in Old School DnD. Our DND didn't bog down until we were in the Fire Giants castle at 9th/10th level and ended up in a fight with almost 100 Trolls who of course regenerate. It was probably three or four hours of combat ending in a TPK. Honestly I think the players dies of boredom. Quick and dirty combat is the key and avoid combat if you can. . I have run into at least two written modules that have a self propelled cleaning broom in them that can be snaffled as a magic item. The Ninja is in this one? we had a player who played a ninja that broke our game.
