I have a 686 from the 1980's, it is a former N.M.STATE POLICE issue revolver; It is pre- lock & I have fired hundreds of rounds through it & no issues! I don't know what is wrong with yours but I have seen several videos of newer 686 with the locks & they all have some defects within the lock mechanism. I hope when you get it back, that S&W will have fixed it!

Is the screw that mounts the site can be turned into far and touch the cylinder. This in turn will cause drag and make the trigger feel really hard to pull. Always check inside the frame to make sure this screw isn't protruding.

Great video. Lookup or research "Waterbreak". Water will not bead on surfaces because of surface tension and or contaminants. You can't get a complete water sheen on glass nor on a surface with contaminate like finger oils. After the part is thoroughly cleaned with a degreaseing detergent or an alkaline agent. Then, wet abrade the surface with light sandpaper or scotch bright pad with DI or distilled water till you are able to spay the surface at an angle to where the water drains off but leave that unbroken water sheen or wet for 5-10 seconds. If the water breaks, continue wet abraiding that area till you can get the surface to stay wet. Doing it flat is just making the water pool.After you're satisfied, thoroughly rinse the surface one last time. It does not need to be a fine mist. A regular spay bottle will be fine. I think more water is better, it will help remove any lifted contaminants. Dry your surface. You could do one last 99% alcohol wipe with a lent free cloth or just start your next process. Key thing, use gloves while and after the wet abrading. Finger oils will be your enemy. Last thing. When epoxy resins cure an amine blush film sometime forms. This is why the second layup should be applied before the 1st layer hardens. So for fully cured resin this and other contaminants need to be removed.

There are at least three comments under this video, only months old, which corroborate the exact same issue with 686 and other S&W models which were new in box. I don't think this issue has been resolved with S&W. There is just a statistical probability of getting a defect like this. As a single test shot will often succeed. It's often the second or third that fails. Which will ship, and end up in customers hands. I still love the piece, but suggest performing a person QA test with 100 rounds of various grain and velocity within the first week of ownership. Send it back if anything is amiss. They will make it right.

I have purchased three Smith & Wesson handguns this year. one from the performance center. The performance center was a 442. I purchased a 642 and a 686 Plus. I had to send the 442 back twice. They had to replace the sear and ejector rod. I had to send it back again because the barrel came out of alignment and was tilted to the left. That repair required silver soldering the barrel to the frame. And the 686, after a grand total of 71 rounds the cylinder won't close. I am done with Smith & Wesson!

Wow! What an experience. I might be having the same issue here, with the barrel alignment. I've noticed I flat out miss to the side now. At first I considered trigger finger mod. And flinch. But I think the revolver itself may be mis-aligned now. Your post corroborates this hunch.
@georgemitchell1980 Жыл бұрын
Just received my 686 last week and the first time at the range did exactly the same thing. Found an article online mentioning a potential cause being the sear and sear spring as well as the hand requiring repair. S&W sent me a return label, but thought I would try one more time at the range before sending off. As compared with the problem typically occurring one in six rounds fired, this time it happened only once in 100 rounds. Note that I have never been able to reproduce the problem when dry firing with snap caps, even at the beginning. The trigger could use some lightening as well. I am considering an Apex trigger job with my gunsmith replacing the sear and sear spring (both parts available online) vs sending to S&W first. Obviously the trigger job will void my warranty.

In short this video is not informative. We need to know exactly what was the mechanical discrepancy and exactly what was the repair procedure. Glad it fired 100 rounds. But that's not saying much either.
@georgegravette1132 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but I put the blame on S&W. In every one of the "send back to Smith & Wesson" videos, S&W returns the gun with only a brief list of what parts were replaced, not repaired, with no explanation as to why (broken, out of spec, missing, etc.). This is especially frustrating when MULTIPLE parts are replaced, and you don't know why, or how they failed. Furthermore, when I have to take my car to a shop for repairs, I always insist they return to me any original parts that they've replaced. I'd like to see this done with gun repairs as well.

I have the 5" version of this revolver. Sorry to say mine had a factory defect also. The gun would completely lock up in double action mode. No reset of the trigger. I returned it to the factory via the dealer. It took 2-3 weeks to get it back and is now working flawlessly. That should not have happened, but to their credit S&W fixed it under warranty and got it right back to me. In the end just a nuisance.

Thank You for your comment(s). I've found through the comment section, this is not an isolated incident. Smith really should investigate these quality control issues. It seems like a metallurgy/hardening issue that creates brittle components. And overall lack of QC/QA before they ship. Mis-aligned barrels, flat out not firing when NIB, etc.

@jrk96792 жыл бұрын
This is why I buy the older 686’s, pre-lock and pre-MIM. 686 no dash through 686-4. They can keep that stupid lock and those junk MIM parts. Also, I think the older ones that had the hand fitted parts were of higher quality and assembled by better quality people.
@TheJustinJ2 жыл бұрын
I generally agree. This one turned out to be a great gun once they sent it back to me (one moth turn around, IIRC). They must have worked it over, because Single-Action trigger pull is scary light. I cannot wear gloves while shooting it. Fortunately, found this out while pointing directly at the center of a target at the range. If I had the poor discipline of half of these guys at my public range, it might have counted as a negligent-D. Cause that shit scared me. I never felt more than a hair breath of pressure through a thin, but tight fitting mechanix glove when I cocked the hammer. Now that I know, its fun. But the gloves come off. And the hammer never comes back, unless the barrel is already bore sighted to a target.

To anyone who buys a S&W if you read the instructions on the firearm it tells you to clean the gun before you load and fire it it has a protective coating if you don't follow the instructions it will lock up the trigger and hammer also cylinder won't open I tried to see by not following up with the instructions on a model 610 10mm it locks up the gun after a cleaning function is fine so read and learn thanks
@tonyshores85602 жыл бұрын
Sorry but I expect a firearm to be fully functional and ready to go when it comes out of the box. Cleaning it externally will do nothing. So I am supposed to take the side plate off and clean the internal mechanism before use? Really? What are they making the internal parts from that they should need coatings? I've owned numerous Smiths over the years. Never saw this problem with any of them.
