2 options: 1stly subsidiary health care; paid 50/50 by employer/employee based on the salary (~14% of the total salary (means 7% for the employee) up to 58k€/y there the increasing of the price stops). The child's are automatically included until they start to work. If you earn more than 58k€/y you can choose to leave that system and get privately insured (option 2) but when you leave and want to come back, you will be health checked and it could lead to exclusions by the insurance. When you are in the system it is always possible to get additional health insurance eg. for dental implantings or things like 1 bed room in the hospital. The insurance is based on the income even when retired. The private system becomes more expensive when the cost of the patient rises. I am voluntarily insured in that system and would never even think about leaving. That system was invented in 1883 to reduce the effects of the industrialization and prevent revolutions from the poor.

And when you get unemployed, the unemployment insurance covers the costs. Both are mandatory for every employee in Germany.

What a lot of people forget is the fact that the gouvernement makes maximum prices for a medical procedure, and makes fixed prices for medication. Check out the prices for insuline in the US and Europe. And another fact is, that the US spend more on "healhtcare" per capita then they do in Germany. So tell me who is doing it wrong. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKiykqOBocmAmq8

Making friends abroad can be really hard. For me, hostels have always been the best way to meet people in a new place. I moved to Dublin from NYC about 6 months ago and I just posted a video about how I owe almost all my friendships here to hostels. It's kind of crazy, but I'm so grateful.

Be ready for any kind of weather: hot, cool, humid, dry, rainy, cold, hurricane, etc. The weather can be extremely unpredictable particularly during that time of year! But also be aware that it's pretty hot here (average is around 29 degrees celsius) up until about November. If you're going to be in southern/central Texas, you probably won't need a super heavy winter coat, like a ski jacket. The weather down here is pretty tropical and mild during the winter compared to Germany. If you're going to be in North Texas it's a bit cooler and drier up there and sometimes it snows, so you might need a heavier jacket. Water-resistant backpacks are nice, especially if you're going to be walking around outside and around a college campus. When it rains/torrential downpours (happens a lot here), you won't have to worry too much about your stuff getting soaked while walking to class. Clothes sometimes fit a little different here than they do there, especially if you're super tall, a lot of times it can be harder to find garments that fit properly, so bring your favorite pieces that you like wearing regularly and then explore a bit when you get here (again it's warm here most of the year, so you don't need a ton of winter gear, just a couple basics!). If you have a preferred skincare or medications that you need to take, you'll need to research and see if you can buy the products or be prescribed the medications here as well. Some skincare products that you can generally find at an Apotheke, can sometimes also be found here, but you'll have to research that. With medication, if your insurance doesn't cover the costs of it (cost-coverage changes from insurance company to insurance company), you'll have to pay out of pocket for it and it can sometimes be super expensive depending on the medication. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out here or on instagram.

Meat in Europe is not expensive in general, but beef is waaay more expensive than basically any other meat choice (it is very uncommon here, and steak is specialty stuff, not everyday food). Other meat options are reasonably priced, except probably for lobster, salmon and shrimp, (if considered to count as meat), those too are very expensive. So what you would/could get cheap in the US does not mean it is just as easy and cheap to produce in Europe as well.

I am not often negative about youtube videos, but i do not really understand this one. You have a boyfriend in germany and you have friends around you. How can you possibly understand Loneliness.
@TheAmericanAbroad5 жыл бұрын
I understand your concern, and I going to try to respond to this is the most diplomatic way that I can! Despite having those elements, there are millions of people around the world who have everything they possibly need to not be lonely, and yet, they still feel lonely. This is a feeling that we as outsiders cannot define for others, as our experiences with loneliness differ and it is an experience we often do not openly present to others. Although I seemingly had all the elements to presumably not be lonely, that does not mean that I cannot possibly understand loneliness. Studying abroad is lonely, no matter if you have a multitude of friends, which I did not have, or only a handful of friends or only a few friends. College is lonely. Adulthood is incredibly lonely in itself, especially with the age we are living in. You have only seen the .5% of my life that is *seemingly* not lonely, that is *seemingly* 100% happy. Although it appears that I am not lonely from an online perspective, it does not mean that I am not dealing with it, among other things, off-camera.
@freshjuice4575 жыл бұрын
@@TheAmericanAbroad I understand your point of view, loneliness is not really the lack of human interactions but is more about lacking or losing a part of yourself in a way or another. I have been studying abroad for 2 years now and my current loneliness level is up the roof. So bad in fact, that i prefer to not think about it but usually i do and when i decide to search for help on youtube, i found your video on homesickness which happens to state that you have had friends and been in a relationship but still feel lonely. Every person have their own different stories but at the moment i was watching your video, i could not understand at all why you would make a video on loneliness because you seem to have meaningful connections, which is all i needed watching this video and still am loking for now. I think other people truly going through loneliness would agree. What i said may sound needy, but at this point this is my honest opinion.

So if I am using Financial aid for my tuition and my major is biology and I go on a marine biology or oceanography etc my financial aid won’t cover it because it’s not apart of my program?
@TheAmericanAbroad5 жыл бұрын
For some programs and universities, that is the case. For example, if the program is affiliated with your university, then generally speaking you can apply financial aid. If it is not affiliated with your university, sometimes you cannot apply financial aid, sometimes you can. It is heavily dependent on your home university, the program you're applying to, and the financial aid you are receiving. If you are going to study abroad somewhere and taking courses that directly transfer back into your degree, again depending on your situation, sometimes you can apply financial aid to the program. If you are taking courses that do not align with your degree plan, depending on what financial aid you receive, depends on what gets covered and what does not get covered by financial aid. I would highly advise that you visit both your study abroad office and the financial aid office at your home university. They will be able to give you more detailed information and specialized advice to your degree and options than I would be able to.

I'm going into my senior year of high school after this labor day when should I start applying for study abroad colleges?
@TheAmericanAbroad5 жыл бұрын
If you are attending college in the U.S., I would suggest waiting to apply to study abroad during your Sophomore or Junior year. Application processes are different per college, so I would educate yourself on how the application process works at the uni you get accepted to, so you can be as prepared as possible. If you want to complete your Bachelor's degree abroad, depending on where you study will depend on when your deadline to apply is. For German Universities, for example, it varies. Some require international students to apply as early April and as late as July. So I would suggest researching programs and universities now and pay special attention to the deadlines for international students seeking a full-time degree.

Thanks for the feedback, I definitely thought about it!
