I owned this boat from 1992 until 2007 in Washington state USA. and had many years of fun times. The boat was named Happy like me when I had her. I would like to contact the present owner if possible as I have all the log books and baby pictures of when it was under construction in Kowloon and would like to see about getting them to the owner. Made me think about good times watching the video.

Ahoy, The owner that we delivered the boat to Adelaide for sold it approx a year after we delivered it. As far as I know the person who purchased it was local to Adelaide. A fair amount of time has passed since I've been in Adelaide so I'm not certain of it's whereabouts now. I'll see what I can do.

Hi Chris, Amazing!! Izzy from Sailing Girls has just informed me of a msg you sent her. Going through my emails, I now see a notification from YT that you too sent me a msg. My apologies for a somewhat late reply. I have next to no history of Promise II other than from the previous owners (Geoff & Eva) whom I purchased her from, that and the assumption someone at some point sailed had her from the UK where she of course was built. The condition of Promise II is largely a testament to Geoff & Eva who owned her for 7 years and brought her back to good repair from a previous owner who I understand utilised her for accomodation purposes only. I've owned & lived aboard Promise II ( she is Promise II now for Oz Reg reasons) for 12 years. Back in 2010 I sold virtually everything I owned and purchased Promise II in the pursuit of a deep set childhood dream. 12 years later and 19,000nm under her keel, most of which has been single handed, Promise II has afforded me my dream, and then some. I love this beautiful old girl for her sea keeping, her welcoming accommodation, comfort and the absolute joy she brings me whilst under sail and swinging from her anchor. One of the things I have greatly come to appreciate is the opportunity of learning a lot about who I am and what I am capable of through the challenges that we've faced together. I'm confident saying that this fine sailing boat has presented me with the finest chapter of my life thus far. Perhaps I owe your late in laws, God rest their Souls, a debt of gratitude for helping to convey this fine vessel into my proximity :) I understand that you’re in possesion of a documented account of your in laws adventures from the UK to Australia aboard Promise, and that you are most generously prepared to share with me. I would very much like to take you up on your kind offer, Chris, and thank you very much for the making the effort to get in touch. If you could advise me on what you feel would be the way of sharing, that would be great. Warm Regards, Brenton.

G'day Mark, The swageless terminal ends that I'm aware of, this includes Sta-Lock, are designed so that you're able to disassemble, inspect and reuse. That said, the manufactures will advise that it's important to use a new cone when reassembling. Always best to consult the manufacturers advice. That way you can be confident of achieving a good result. Hope this helps.

It seems very similar sailing to Pacific Northwest, Inside Passage, Hecate Strait, etc. Nice to be able to dodge the cold and enter the warmth up north. Joshua Slocum sailed much of that water in "Spray". I really enjoyed the trip & Good Luck from an old sailor now on the Canadian prairie.

I've heard people say the Voyage 500 suffers from slamming in moderate weather due to low bridge deck clearance. Did you experience this during your travels on this cat?
@BrentonWalkerSailing
@BrentonWalkerSailing 3 жыл бұрын
Short answer is yes. That said, It will depend on the size & angle of the waves. >1.5m on the beam and forward of that she'll bang like a big ol' bass drum. Aft of the beam it's pretty much a sleigh ride.

First saw Ethel's in 1975 and it still had the ribbing off the ship. My Mum and Dad and friends used to camp back in it in 1949. Now there's hardly a piece of ribbing left. Not a good wave to surf as it closes out, odd rare good day on your way to other places facing West.

I noticed that you had about 200mm of bare wire above the fitting. Does this allow corrosion?
@BrentonWalkerSailing
@BrentonWalkerSailing 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, The black plastic poly pipe was put in place to help protect the main sail from chaff when sailing downwind. The wire in this video is a back stay on a catamaran. As the wire we are using is 316SS, there is no requirement to prevent contact with the water. That said, corrosion of SS does become a problem when Stainless Steel is starved of oxygen whilst being exposed to moisture, hence why a sealant is placed inside the terminal end to help prevent the ingress of water. Hope this is helpfull.

Oh, but you are as awesome as me, Jason. Everyone has a talent, it's just a matter of finding your special skill and honing it. There is a saying which goes... "The purpose of life is to find your gift, and the meaning of life is to give that gift away" That's not to say you give it away for free, if you know where I'm coming from. When I started out making Vids I was pretty much rubbish, but I enjoyed it. I reckon if you pursue whatever you enjoy / love doing, you end up becoming very efficient at it. Thanks for your kind words my friend, much appreciated.

@@jasonh2469 Before you go out and spend any moola on a boat, I strongly suggest you head to a yacht / sailing club and get yourself a ride on a yacht. Most clubs have race events both in the sailing season and off season. Most skippers are only to happy to introduce aspiring sailors to sailing. When selecting a boat for whatever purpose you're going to use it, you're going to need to acquire some knowledge so you then can make an informed decision about the design of boat that best suits you. What you don't want is to make a decision that you end up regretting. By hanging out with people that sail, asking questions, doing some research and experiencing as many different types of boats that you can, you'll end up placing yourself in a position where you'll have a good opportunity to make a good decision. Whatever your ambition... Plant the seed, manifest the idea, focus on your goal and work towards it. The journey begins when the idea is born and you decide to set the wheels in motion. Enjoy the ride my friend, and remember...the journey can easily be as exciting and as rewarding as the destination itself.

Nice job, the use of this kind of standing rigging is already history: synthetic rigging, such as dyneema and the like, is now the standard.
@gypsysoul1719
@gypsysoul1719 3 жыл бұрын
Dyneema is great for racers, not so much for the average sailor. I just watched a video of expert rigger replacing a dyneema shroud. It took him about 10x time to do all the splicing and the ropes must be constantly adjusted and replaced each 10 years, perhaps less if exposed to tropical sun. For the average DIY sailor, SS is convenient, reliable and long lasting.
@Snookbite24
@Snookbite24 2 жыл бұрын
I just got back from the rigger and ya, I went with 316. I know Dyneema is getting popular but I’m not comfortable with all that yet. I’m brand new, just bought my first liveaboard ‘83 Endeavour 40CC and I’m RE rigging the boat by myself. I’m curious about the silicone though? My existing Norseman and stay locks have no silicone but I’ve been told to use it. The rigger also said lack of oxygen corrodes SS, so which is it…. Silicone or no silicone?
@mishpatim123
@mishpatim123 2 жыл бұрын
@@Snookbite24 That's right, SS must 'corrode' in order to protect itself. Use loctite to seal thread and (internal) nuts in the Norseman fittings. It'l keep out water, which might freeze thereby creating microcracs on expansion. Dyneema is grea though, the UV damage is only done superficially and is a minor problem if the outer coating is not damaged. The inside of the rope is not affected by the UV because of the coating. Always take diameters largely enough. Happy miles !!!
