I picked up a few of the automatic waterers for goats on Amazon about 6 months ago.. a life saver. Hooks to your hose and you never have to fill containers again. Just have to clean them once a week. About $30 and I had to buy a T fitting for my hose and run about 50ft of hose. I got about 25 chickens.

For your ducks, try dry peas if they’re available. You can soak em a few days first zero energy cost, but they will eat them dry as long as grit is available. My chickens eat the daylights out of whole corn without any treatment, but I prefer black oil sunflower seeds because they’re non-GMO. For treats, I’ll make them a big batch of popcorn, they love it! If you want to cook corn for your chickens, try a pressure cooker, it will get the job done much faster with less energy cost. I ferment my chicken feed for 3 days, they love it. Big benefit of soaking/boiling feed is the chickens demand for drinking water goes way down.

precooked and/or soaked corn is softer and makes it easier for their bodies to break it down and use the nutrients, and since it's easier they use less calories to digest it, meaning they get to keep more of the calories and energy provided by the feed than with the dry hard stuff

So, you heat up corn to ferment? My mom had ducks for eggs but even though I was between 3 and 5 when she had them, I didn’t like the taste. Does anyone eat turkey eggs?

Heat up the corn to break down the kernels. People do eat turkey eggs. Not me but people do 😂

@@ColeFamilyFarms Thank you!! I ferment feed and fermented pearled barley that I gave this evening. Got 50 pounds of corn from a local “old ways” farmer. Dried. So, I either have to crack it or reconstitute and ferment it. Hens don’t like it whole. Thanks again!!

Where are you? I was given a banana tree (central Indiana) for my unheated greenhouse but the first freeze and it looks dead. Should I see if it’s okay in the Spring since the raised bed isn’t frozen? How long does the corn ferment take? And, how loong does it last? Just fill with clean water over the corn level?
@ColeFamilyFarms
@ColeFamilyFarms 8 ай бұрын
I’d cover the banana tree roots for the winter. Wait until spring and it should start up again. Fermenting the corn takes 3 days. Last until you run out but I wouldn’t keep it over a month. Just cover the corn to prevent air from getting to it

@@ColeFamilyFarms Thank you! You are SO kind!! I was going to pull up the banana stalk because it looks so sad. Did I see that you add ACV with the mother to the corn and water once you’re done cooking and cooling?
