This biointensive (organic, closely planted) form of agriculture offers some relief against fuel shortages (peak oil production was in 2005-2006), non chemical, neighborhood production. Most importantly, it can mitigate some of climate change's ill effects. Cuba is hit by tropical storms and hurricanes almost yearly. Because these gardens are scattered across the island, some will avoid the worst effects of "bad weather." Cuba claims that it now (2020s) the gardens can supply 90% of Havana's produce needs with some smaller towns and cities nearly all of their needs. China, with its large population, droughts, and floods, would do well to impl1ment some of Cuba's agricultural methods,

Nicola, Gabrielle et al, thank you for involving the communities in your productions. Unsure if you were aware, although possibly Rhoda Reddock was, that for the very first time, a Social Impact Study on the Nariva Wetlands was commissioned and carried out by another branch of UWI. This document should be available at Forestry Division, in the files covering the whole Nariva Wetlands issue. Montserrat Carbonnell & Ducks Unlimited proposed this work be done and recorded. The Pointe-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust was intimately & actively involved in the Nariva Wetlands issues, We remain interested and concerned to this day (2023)

The collapse of the Roman Empire has led to the collapse of global trade and many industries that had relied on mass slave labor. However, the individual farmers soon became significantly more efficient, and the mindset of local sustainability, which initially created the Dark Ages, soon produced new innovations that could not be possible under the old system.

Cuba don't fall for any American colonialism, when you are doing very well with your current food system. Especially, any of Monsanto, Bayer, Con-Agra, etc. Reject all American agriculture at your borders & ports. Maybe sell us Cuban cigars & rum if you still make it...

Why do American's want to farm in Cuba? They have a massive country to farm their GMO's and use their chemicals. Cuba must not allow anyone besides Cubans to farm their land organically. They must outlaw all chemicals and fertilizers. The US wants to f'up Cuba's land. This is serious. Cuba must farm enough to export organic food to other countries including the US. Oh Lord protect Cuba!

I have noticed that, in both videos, that the garden plots are planted densely or biointensively This is, an excellent way to conserve space, especially in urban settings. I would suggest that Cuba add vertical gardening by growing vining and climbing vegetable varieties which can double and triple production for the same area as regular plants. I recommend the book by Derick Fell, 2011. Vertical Gardening: Grow Up, Not Out, for more Vegetables and Flowers in Much Less Space. I use his techniques here in Mexico on my small lot. (p.s. I have no connection to Mr. Fell)
