I think oda made his stronger than when luffy meet him, there has been advised that oda has sped up the story, and even oda said at one point he doesn’t know how luffy will win. Luffy basically has to be made OP to win. If you think it’s not a deep character.. almost a training arc if u think about.

From what I understand they are moving the anime from a weekly release schedule to the more modern seasonal model that is used today. That way they can fix the biggest issue the anime had, pacing. It’ll also give Oda more time to get ahead in the manga.

The have been going weekly for 20+ years the break is needed and they are gonna reanimate some arcs like fishman island so it’s a win
