A girl looked out the window; she saw several birds flying around her trees from branch to branch. Then they hopped on the ground and pecked at the grass below the tree. The girl got kind of fascinated watching the birds and her mother noticed it. “Why don’t you feed the birds dear? I am sure they would like that.” “Um, I don’t know what they eat and I have nothing to serve them on.” Then the girl’s mother left the girl and the girl looked out at the birds and thought “My mother is right, I should feed those birds.” The girl got some bread out and then got some of her mother’s fine china (that was made in Japan) and went outside. She placed out the china and broke up the bread and put it on the small plates. Then she stepped away and waited for the birds to eat the bread, but they just went jumping from one branch to another and flying around in the sky. The girl started to get an uneasy feeling and thought maybe the birds didn’t like her; she was starting to pout and sulk. “Dumb birds, why aren’t you eating? Don’t you like my food?” The girl went back in the house and her brother came in. “Who left the bread on mom’s China outside?” “I did,” said the girl. “Oh were you having a tea-party or something?” “No, I was feeding the birds.” “On China? Ha ha. You’re dumb birds don’t eat off China. Watch!” The boy went outside and took the bread off the China and called to the birds and threw the bread on the ground in the grass. At first the birds were unreceptive but in a few minutes the birds started eating the bread. The boy looked to the window and saw his sister. She was watching. He motioned for her to come outside, and she did. “See, birds eat of the ground, and people eat off of China.” “Well if they were civilized birds they would eat off of China.” “No, if they were civilized they wouldn’t be birds.” “Correct, one question though.” “What?”
