Went to view an end terraced house in St Helens years ago, walked upstairs and the back bedroom was sloping so much the door on a wardrobe wouldn’t stay shut ! I think that was probably on top of old mine workings. I didn’t buy it obviously.

Does it even make economic sense? In contrast, thermally insulate the residential houses and buy an air-to-water heat pump for each one? Today's houses only need a few MWh of heat per year for heating. Mine waters tend to be heavily mineralized with highly corrosive effects on metals. Plus, I see there's some industrial heat pump and heat exchanger, all of which lowers the economic efficiency of this. The costs for the construction of the distribution heat network are also likely to be significant.

You need to sort the orange mess that is killing my 2 local rivers in South Wales (Rhymney and sirhowy) so I can get back to fishing and start buying your fishing licence again . This has been going on for over 20 years and you haven't done anything to the point the orange mess travels 4l50 yards down river per year ! NRW , EA , and the COAL AUTHORITY are not fit for purpose and should be held accountable for doing nothing !

why are the rocks at the final discharge point covered in iron oxides?
@MiningRemediationAuthority
@MiningRemediationAuthority 9 ай бұрын
Hi, sorry for late reply. The A-Winning scheme removes on average over 92% of the iron in the mine water before it is discharged. While this is sufficient to mitigate the environmental impact on the watercourse, the small amount of oxidised iron left in the water can still cause some minor localised staining to the outlet structure of the scheme before the treated water enters the watercourse. This staining is harmless and has no environmental impact. Many thanks.

What is more important is why do we not mine coal anymore as we all know we still have enough coal under our feet in the whole of the UK .Bring back out proud tradition of being the best coal miners in the world.👷🏼‍♂️🇬🇧⚒️

I'm sorry to tell you but the UK simply doesn't have enough demand for coal as it once did. I'm only in my thirties but when I was a kid, several family members still had coal fires. Now, everybody has central heating or a log burner. There is only one coal-fired power station left in the UK. The world is moving towards renewables. We can't set our country back by returning to coal.

It would appear that they did know (which is scary). The Coal Authority state "Coal Authority project manager Keith Ollivant - who liaised with contractors, the council and neighbours - oversaw the work with support from our safety, engineering, legal and property teams. He said: These houses date from the 1930s and the builder knew the shaft was there, which is why the terrace was designed as a dog-leg with the alleyway spanning it. They probably thought the foundations of the properties would support each other which, to be fair, they did for 80 years. However, over time the fill within the shaft slumped, at which point the houses above weren’t supported, so they tilted, causing damage. In this video, Keith explains what happened after he was called out to 18 Wallace Lane:" www.gov.uk/government/news/coal-authority-caps-200m-deep-coal-mine-shaft-to-keep-residents-safe-in-wigan?

It’s not their job to treat waste water. That’s the responsibility of the privatised water companies. 127 tonnes of zinc or cadmium in your drinking water ain’t ‘small scale’ Heavy metals cause all kinds of health issues, especially cadmium.

Don't forget in all council areas across the United Kingdom there a massive building work for new housing scheme so if the sewage system can't cope now what's this going to look like in 5 to 10 years ? . In each area of councils governments private landlords councillors politicians your find corruption there joined with each other through organisations corporations and industries they don't care for the environments or the wildlife all they care about is the power the control and the money the greed .

I live nere aspull and when on a bike ride I found an OPEN shaft right at the top of a massive hill next to aspull pumping Station. Well it's got a flimsy chicken wire fence around it but still dangerous as F .... it is only shown as a shaft on 1 of the old maps I have finally found, all the other old maps say its nothing. Very strange might chuck a few bricks down see how deep it is

Why aren’t we pumping this water up through extraction.. we are a battery dependant world..so zinc & cadmium are saleable products These mines though flooded, could possibly still contribute to a kind of recycling, .. just thinking out loud 🤔

Fantastic to see such enthusiasm about Engineering and promoting getting women into the industry. Great advice also, about doing a general course that keeps peoples options open if they aren't sure what discipline appeals to them the most - and in any event, it's equally important to have some engineers that aren't specialists, but understand cross-discipline (crucial when getting things to work successfully 'as a system')

I live just up the road from this in aspull. It’s amazing to me that the whole of Wigan didn’t just disappear down a massive sink hole when you consider the huge amount of mining that’s gone on here over years and years. Any chance you could tell me which pit this would have been was it one of the main shafts or a vent shaft I’d be very interested to find out.
