No, Bartholomeu Dias did not land in Cape Town. In 1488, he became the first European to round the southern tip of Africa, proving that a sea route to the Indian Ocean was possible. However, he did not stop at what is now Cape Town. Instead, he landed at Mossel Bay on the southern coast of South Africa. Dias named the southernmost point he rounded "Cabo das Tormentas" (Cape of Storms) due to the rough seas, but King John II of Portugal later renamed it "Cabo da Boa Esperança" (Cape of Good Hope) because of the opportunities it promised for trade with Asia.

Thank you for this. It is really nice to be able to visualize the original geography.

I agree with the comment that the music was inappropriate. Would have been ok for a Caribbean island though. The fort is not rendered correctly; it was pentagonal, so had five points not four. Nice to see a re-creation of a city in the past but if it’s not done accurately what is the point? Was the street layout incorrect too?

Brilliant work!! I wondered if Roggebaai might be incorrectly translated as Rocky Bay.The Lower Countries have a fish they call "rog".
@jetjunky676010 күн бұрын
Yes there appear to be multiple possibilities, Rocky, Seal, (A Type of fish), Rye (or grains / provisions)
@karenk911910 күн бұрын
@jetjunky6760 Indeed rye translates as "rogge" in Dutch/Flemish.

So thrilling to watch, well done. After the mention of Newlands Brewery, it would have been wonderful to also include the oldest high school in South Africa: SACS which was founded in 1829.
@superjaseZA9 күн бұрын
SACS only moved to newlands in the 1950s. before then it was located at what is now the hiddingh campus of UCT from 1841 and before that i think it was on long street.

Absolutely marvelous, I grew up in Cape Town, and know much of its history. My grand parents lived in one of the first suburbs called Pappendorp, but later changed to Woodstock. Love your narrative and look forward to seeing more. What a beautiful use of a Cities Skyline, wish i could build like this. How long did it take? ❤
@jetjunky676010 күн бұрын
Thank you, yes I saw Pappendorp on the old maps. So far this has taken about 2 months, but the next few episodes may take a bit longer

Most of the people Indonesian archipelago that were exiled to the Cape as political prisoners for resisting the dutch east Indian or (VOC) company, like the Bandanese, Javanese e.t.c. The VOC was probably the most powerful company at the time and brutally crushed any resistance of the local populations whilst monopolizing the spice trade.

Nice video enjoyed it. I live in Cape Town for over 50 years heard many stories where the ocean started. How the area grew from way back when from grandparents and their fore fathers. Ignore the stories of not getting the history right. The history was messed up by the whites in apartheid to suite their agendas. Making claims which turn out to be lies.

This is brilliant, I look forward to the one about Johannesburg and the Gold rush along the witwatersrand. The gold deposits along the Witwatersrand is from a meteor impact at the Vredefort dome which brought up a lot of the gold deposits which are still mined today
