I got so frustrated with using generative fill (asking it to remove a person from a scene and putting another in its palce for example) I gave up in the end and went back to doing it manually, I hadn't noticed this tool hidden away so thanks for the heads up.
@Robert-BishopКүн бұрын
Yeah, you would think "remove" would be a very basic prompt for it to understand. I do feel like Adobe want Generative Fill for creating stuff and the Removal Tool for removing it. As you say though, it's not the most obvious tool in the interface. Cheers for watching. 😊

So I couldn’t get it right in camera as it was blowing a hoolie and persistently raining and a few drops hit the lens whilst shooting a rainbow up at the Butt of Lewis. LR AI removal did a pretty good job but I’ll also have e a go in PS and compare the two - thanks for the info and I’ll let you know how it compares 👍🏻
@Robert-BishopКүн бұрын
Yeah, when the LR one works, it's great. I just find it usually needs a bit of fine tuning before it's right. I think if you've made the effort to go out in the rain and got that shot of the rainbow, it's fair play to use a wee bit of fixing in post if it needs it! Thanks for watching Andrew. 😊

@ If was brutal Robert ! Opened the van door and it nearly blew off its hinges - the metal chord stay snapped clean in two but luckily the door remained attached ! Not the best image I’ve ever taken but a rainbow shot nevertheless and worth some AI assisted recovery

Why not just go to the Camera Raw Filter and use the generative AI in there? It does a great job in removing unwanted objects .

I haven't used the one in camera RAW Mick, but if it's based on the one in Lightroom, then I would imagine it's similarly inconsistent (as shown at 10:15). It might be different though, so I'll give it a try. Thanks for watching.

Hi Robert, I've watched many of your videos, all fantastic! I've had a Nikon D40 with Nikon lenses (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and 55-200mm f/4-5.6) for many years. I enjoy photographing horses (both portraits and action shots) and this year (maybe taking advantage of Black Friday) I'd like to upgrade my camera, spending around 700 pounds or so. I'm quite undecided-should I buy an entry-level Nikon mirrorless? But then I would need to purchase at least a new lens or an F to Z adapter (which costs at least 250 pounds). Should I buy a more advanced Nikon DSLR so I can use my old lenses? Or should I switch brands entirely? I would be very grateful for your advice. Thanks! Giulia
@Robert-Bishop3 күн бұрын
Hi Giulia - it's a tough one. I would be tempted to go for a Z5. I think if you shop around you could get one for around £700. Like you say though, you would need to get new lenses. Even your 18-55 and 55-200 would only work with the FTZ adaptor in crop sensor mode. You could go for a Z50 and then use your DX lenses on there with the adaptor - personally I prefer full frame. If you were to stick with DSLR I would recommend a D750 as a full frame option, or a used D500 as a crop sensor option. Or if you didn't want to get used, then a D7500. I'm not very familiar with other brands these days, so I can't advise much there. I know that's probably not the clearest answer, but hopefully helps a little! Thanks for watching the videos. 😊

Great tutorial on blending shots. Is Lightroom and Photoshop only available now on a yearly subscription plan? I have a ten year old edition of Photoshop on my Mac and don't fancy having subscriptions to new software where I have to keep paying year after year. I know there are continual updates, but are older versions on disc or direct download still functional enough to do basic editing? Thanks for your great channel!

It's been so long since I used a disc based version of Photoshop, I'm afraid I can't remember! Adobe products are certainly expensive. I may look into free alternatives for stacking shots. Hopefully there are some good options out there. Thanks for supporting the channel. 😊

I bought the Nikon Z8 and after 2 weeks I started having problems with the view finder. I had it set for auto switching mode and when the screen turned off I turned it back on and I couldn’t see the back screen to review my pictures. I had to change the screen settings back every time. Now I’m getting the Nikon D500 to shoot with. I’m not spending a lot of money again on a camera.

How does this lens compare with the zdx 50-250? I am using this lens with my z30 and an FTZ adapter. I was wondering whether the zdx 50-250 would be an upgrade or not. My comparison points would be sharpness, colour reproduction and how quick and accurate the autofocus is. I dont see anything on youtube or the general internrt comparing these 2 lenses.

I read an interview with a Canon exec a few years ago (probably 10+) on Ken Rothwells site. He answered a question about their 2.8 L series wide angle which had some fall off in the corners. His response was along the lines of 'if the corners need to be perfectly sharp at 16mm then it's because there's nothing interesting in the middle'. It stuck with me because I thought it was rather defensive and arrogant, many years later I realise it was good advice! Canon of course upgraded the model with sharper corners and people forked out the £000's for it, the modern day marketing genius of sharpness at work. Completely agree with you on it though, horses for courses. I have a couple of 25 year old + lenses that have fabulous IQ, I wouldn't use them for a wedding though as the focussing motors aren't quick enough. (Nice to see Padley's still holding onto a bit of colour.)
@Robert-Bishop14 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's a good point! There are some niche situations where I think it matters, like astro and keeping the stars sharp in the corners, but I think the point still stands. I bet you could get some nice wedding shots with the vintage ones, but I can imagine you need the reliability that comes with modern lenses. And yeah, Padley's still good for the moment. Cheers for watching mate. 😊

I love the old 70-200mm as well, it's one of those lenses that doesn't test well, but looks superb in real life. Corner resolution rarely matters with a tele lens, it's usually out of focus anyway. Beware failing AF motors if buying one now though, once they die you can't even manual focus! Mine is on the way out. The only "better" lens I own is an old 105mm f/2.5, but the hit rate is a lot lower without AF.

Now this is one that I have got to find out how I can share it with a person I knew quite well many years ago. He would use nothing other than older lens for just the glass alone. His claim is that many of the newer lens are all plastic. Not sure as I am no expert on that. But it sure can bring up people taking sides pretty quickly! lol Well, now I'm not going to pay attention to the lens at all and take in all the area has to offer and find joy just in seeing good 'ol Otis running free and enjoying his life to the full!
@Robert-Bishop16 күн бұрын
That's true Bruce - the build quality is another reason to like the vintage lenses, and they're not necessarily any heavier because they generally contain less glass than the modern ones. Padley is like a playground for the dogs. I'm sure Otis #1 would love it! 😊

I'm perfectly fine with the lack of scientific rigour in this video. If it was all about photographing those black and white charts, I'd probably click away as soon as I woke up from my coma. 😆 Vintage SLR lenses are a bit before my time, but I was surprised by how much I like the manual aperture and focus process, regardless of quality. I have a small collection of varying quality (nothing absolutely impeccable, i.e. nothing very expensive), was playing about with my latest, a Tokina zoom, in the last shreds of golden hour today. Soft as butter in a summer heatwave, but lovely colours. So much so that I had to switch the photo style from 'vivid' to something duller! Honestly, the worst thing about them, is having to change the IBIS FL settings with old zooms when I'm handholding. Oh, and the fact my M43 cameras turn everything into a telephoto. 😅

Yes, good point about preferring the function on vintage lenses - that's something I should have mentioned in the video. I thought you were going to go all Thomas Heaton on us there Robert, and start making your food in the camper van. As for vintage lenses from the SLR era, there are some good and bad lenses out there. Some vintage lenses like the helios 55mm are coveted for their quirks. I think vintiage glass suits mirrorless cameras very well as you often have inbody stabilisation that dslrs didn't have. As long as aren't shooting wildlife or sports or some other subject where you need to use autofocus they offer good image quality for not a lot of money. I think you proved you can get great images from them.

Morning Robert - I have the 70-200 and it’s a cracker ! A few interesting points in here - I have a 35mm prime which I think I’ll try out after you mentioned being good in really low light - I was out on Friday in the woodlands and it was surprisingly dark so well worth a go. When I was out , like you, there was still plenty colour so after Thomas Heatons autumn struggle maybe he should join us in the Peak District or Lancashire 😂 Finally you mentioned focus peaking which I need to check out and see if available on my D5300 !! Great spot and lovely images - it’s been a very still and warm past few days (just missing the mist !) All the best mate 👍🏻

In the end I didn't need the wide aperture of the 50mm as it was a reasonably bright morning. During my previous foggy woodland video, it would have been very handy though. Thanks for this interesting and informative video, Robert. I have begun a short experiment shooting with the Canon Neutral style, which I then edit lightly in Apple Photos. My reason for doing so is that I have had trials of five mainstream processing apps, but they all render Raw files differently and sometimes not very well for the price. My thinking is that either in camera or Canon DPP for Raw software probably produces the best image quality as a starting point because no one knows more about the files than Canon. However, DPP is really clunky to use. I have also been impressed with Capture One and DXO rendering, but these are premium products at premium prices. I may end up reverting to Raw and using DXO Photolab, but I think this will be an interesting test. I don’t think enough attention is given overall to the initial Raw file rendering quality. What’s the point of lots of bells and whistles in apps if the base rendering is poor?

I love your channel, Robert. What you're doing here may be art, but it doesn't satisfy the definition of photography that I live by: a moment in time from the real world. It's digital (or computational) image manipulation. Photoshop's editing tools are artificial constructs. When you use layers, cloning, etc., you exit the realm of photography. I strongly object to photographers who, for example, use sky replacement and then pass off what they've done as landscape photography. I have to compete with such people at Getty Images and it's unfair that I don't falsely manipulate my images, yet they do without disclosing it. It's like shooting in a zoo and passing off your photos as if you went on African safari. Zoo photographs are fine if you say your animals are captive. So are all the things you're doing to this image. Just don't claim it's a landscape photo.
@Robert-Bishop29 күн бұрын
Thanks Rob. I think this touches on what I was talking about at the end of the video. I am happy to label an image differently. I would say it's a landscape image that has primarily been created photographically but also manipulated digitally. Thanks for watching. 🙂

If your photography is to showcase a beautiful scene, whether it’s a natural setting or scenery, a portrait of someone (with a shitty background), a building or street with litter, garbage, scaling paint, etc…cropping to improve upon it…..is Kool in my humble opinion!

An interesting debate Robert. Having also watched that smaller channel ;) I believe there is no right or wrong answer. Creativity and artistic intent are down to the photographer and the edit style assist in the final production of what one wants to convey in the final piece of art. AI on the other hand is a different world altogether. Personally I will continue to remove dust spots, unwanted clutter , people sometimes and to use the power of LR and PS to create the final photograph that represents what I saw / imagined / intended. I won't be misleading in my images with AI. Amen
@Robert-Bishop29 күн бұрын

Yeah, I guess some people wouldn't mind - that's the great thing about art being subjective. For me, it just felt like an obstruction. I feel like I want to walk into the scene, but always end up mentally tripping over the branches! 😂
@AndrewWaltonPhotographyАй бұрын
I sometimes remove items from a scene, stray bits of litter, an annoying twig that creeps in from a corner and the occasional unwanted lamppost, etc. Basically, the things that distract you and stop you from enjoying the image. It's a far cry from AI editing and sky replacement, but I can see why some may still call it cheating. It depends on what you want to convey. James Popsys, who I think Thomas referred too enjoys encorporating man made elements into his landscape photography. I often look at some of his work, and as much as I like his photography, I think if I took that photo, people would ask why I left those elements in the composition. A good demonstration of the techniques involved Robert.
@Robert-Bishop29 күн бұрын
Yeah, of course, if you choose to purposfully keep those things in, then it's an equally valid artistic. choice. I guess that's the beauty of photography, and art in general, it can mean something completely different from one person to the next. Cheers for watching. 🙂
