Just found that Video today. Nice review and very nice shots. My favorite is the one at 13:23. Very nice composition and processing. A monochrome version would also be fantastic. Ah... and your Video made me order that lens ;)

Just saw your Nikkor 40mm video. And I always wondered why the 28 and 40 don't have a lens hood. It's not like those are such premium lenses that wouldn't need one. But most of those everyday carry lenses come without one.

Good vid and nice shots. But this lens is far from impressive. If you have to stop down to f/4 (even f/8!) to get sharp results, what’s the point of a fast prime?
@Robert-BishopКүн бұрын
Thanks. It's not that you can't use it at f2, you're just going to sacrifice a bit of quality. Max sharpness isn't my main concern, particularly with street photography. I think you have to bear in mind the size, weight and price too. It is a great lens for the money, but if you want ultimate sharpness at max apertures you're going to have to compromise on size and weight and pay a lot more. Thanks for watching. 😊
@ozuidemaКүн бұрын
@ fair point. It’s just that I shoot primes usually wide open or close to wide open, so I’d probably get frustrated - although I know I should worry about sharpness less than I do :)

D500 is still listed on Nikon website as a flagship crop sensor DSLR, it wasn’t discontinued. That said, you can actually buy it new for a fare price.

I have them on several lenses and cameras. For the most part, I'm in 'Team Lens Hood'. I tend to shoot most of my images during the day so unwanted strong light into the lens can be an issue. I'd rather use a lens hood than a UV filter to protect the lens.
@Robert-Bishop4 күн бұрын
Yeah, with you there Andrew, a lot of UV filters seem to be fairly overpriced too. I do have a handful of lenses without hoods, so I may occasionally pop one on there, but much prefer the lens hood if poss. Thanks for watching. 😊
@paulkennedycreativemedia5 күн бұрын
Much the same reason I use one too. Good insight to the hoods.

I agree with most of your points, the only exception being that when shooting through a window, sometimes it helps to use the lenshood to stop unwanted reflections.
@Robert-Bishop4 күн бұрын
Yeah, you're right. I was just thinking about being further away from the glass leading to more reflections, but of course, the lens hood would help to cut that out. That should have been in the pros section. I'll see if I can add a correction somewhere. Cheers for watching. 😊
@peakadventures_6 күн бұрын
Something i always done is flip the lens hood around to allow that little bit more light into the camera in low light situations, as you know I upload photos every day pretty much 😅 and some of them shots were taken in really low light ,but with the idea of flipping the lens hood around i was able to get a lot of shots
@Robert-Bishop4 күн бұрын
Yeah, good point - I guess it would let a tad more light in. Good call. Thanks for watching. 😊

Hmmm I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve used a hood . I have the Lee filter system so a no go there ❌ and space in my bag is the important so another ❌ My tripod mounted camera did blow over out on the peninsula at Luskentyre and only sheer luck saved a disastrous end! Great to hear your thoughts Robert 👍🏻

Oh yeah, good call Andrew - I didn't think about magnetic filter systems. Another one to add to the list there then. Cheers for watching. 😊

just came across your video just recently got a z6ii and ftz adapter although i am using a 24-120 f4 on my z6ii 99% of the time i did keep my 16-35 to use with the ftz adapter saves about £1000 doing it this way instead of buying the 14-30 haha
@Robert-Bishop4 күн бұрын
Cool. The 14-30 is a very good lens and much smaller than the 16-35, but a grand is a grand! I'm yet to get hold of a 24-120, but it's very much on my list. Thanks for watching. 😊
@LeePelling6 күн бұрын
i used to use a lens hood all the time , for the same reasons you mentioned. Then i got filters , originally the Lee 150 x 100 slot in filters and more recently the K&F Magnetic filter system. The Lee system there was no way to use the filters with a lens hood and the magnetic system you can unless like me you purchased the larger filters and step up rings so you only need one set of filters and again as the step up ring lives on the front of the lens you can no longer attach the lens hood. I still carry them in my bag in case i need them . Nice images to by the way !
@Robert-Bishop4 күн бұрын
Yeah, Andrew Hamilton mentioned the same thing about magnetic filters. Something I'd completely overlooked. Great point though. Thanks for watching Lee. 😊

I use primes for landscapes and almost all other work. 35 50 85 1.8 S lenses on Z camera. They are wonderful lenses. But to go small and lighter, Leica M lenses talke up the space of 85. They are 50 2.8 35 2.0 90 4.0. 50 & 90 are collapsible. I only own the 24/120 F 4 Zoom and it has its place.

It's not bad when you have the camera level, as the horizon appears straight. If you tilt up or down however, the distortion becomes very noticeable.

Not for the first time, I watch a video of yours and realise the topic is very similar to what I've just recorded!! No truer word has ever been said. The amount of images I have taken of one object for a product shoot is crazy. Never can tell till you get back and see the image on the screen. Take as much images as you can, as you will only need one. No one needs to see the rest.
@Robert-Bishop12 күн бұрын
Absolutely Paul. Although, just to play devil's advocate, I guess there's value in being able to nail it first time when you're doing commercial work. I'm happy with the high volume approach though! Thanks for watching mate. 😊

Is the Tokina 100 macro compatible with Nikon Z series in autofocus (with the FTZ adapter)? I understand that it has an internal non-ultrasonic motor. Otherwise I'd better consider a Nikkor AF105D because I use FM/FE, D700/810/850 and I would like to get a Z6 with FTZ. .
@Robert-Bishop18 күн бұрын
No, the auto focus doesn't work with the FTZ adaptor unfortunately. I use a Sigma 105mm now which works perfectly with the adaptor on my Z7. 😊

@AndrewHamiltonPhotography20 күн бұрын
I had a bunch of poor shots from a trip out after the first snow a couple of weeks back. It was beginning to melt and started to rain and the landscape wasn’t what I envisaged. High expectations and disappointment ! As you say you need to try and switch off , relax and relieve the pressure and that way the creative juices will flow. Some of my best images have come when I’ve been in this state of mind 👍🏻
@Robert-Bishop19 күн бұрын
That's a shame Andrew. I think the snow always looks best when you catch it freshly after it has fallen. I've got to say though, I'm kind of glad it has gone - much easier to get around! 😂 I've been enjoying your Scotland images recently - some great shots there, so maybe you were in relaxed mode for that. 😊
@AndrewWaltonPhotography20 күн бұрын
The expectations we often set ourselves indeed can be counter productive, Robert. But the pressures are of our own making so I agree as photographers we probably all need to take a step back and remember we do this for enjoyment.

I've found 300mm to be a great focal length on a FF body, standing on the sidelines at the top of the box looking up the field waiting for action to come towards me, or shots on goal; 450mm effective is too long for me. In the 'old days' I used a 70-200mm f/2.8 on a DX body with the same strategy and effect.
@Robert-Bishop25 күн бұрын
Yeah, after trying this, I tend to agree. The 300 vs 70-200 might be a good comparison for the next time I do this. Thanks for watching. 😊

Nonsense about "large prints"... I've printed 20x30" from a D500. Fantastic. Fact is, it's about the photographer. Not the camera. If you can't take great shots with a D500, try painting...
@Robert-BishopАй бұрын
Yes, you absolutely can get decent large scale prints, even from a 12mp camera, but if you specifically want to make a lot of large prints, a camera with more mega pixels will be the better tool for you. It will produce more detail, particularly when looking closely at the prints, and also gives you more flexibility to be able to crop images and still make a good print.

Hi Robert just a quick question what is the 150-600mm lens like with Z6 for wildlife. 👌
@Robert-BishopАй бұрын
I haven't used it with a Z6 John, but I've used it with my Z7 and I think the 6 and 7 are essentially the same except for the megapixel count. Works really well with the FTZ adaptor - although I don't personally find the Z7 the best camera for action and wildlife - not sure how the Z6 does in that regard. But I'm terms of how the lens works with the body - perfect. 😊
