Truely a masterpiece in my eyes

Glad to find this recording after all these years! I spent two days at that SoP recording session as a member of the congregation. I'm also glad this commissioned hymn was taken as a choir item - nicely sung here - because I don't think Highland Cathedral makes an easy hymn tune, with those quick quavers as the second and third notes of each line. At least Timothy Dudley Smith (although professing no musical ability) knew to provide short words at each of these points. Not all writers have been so successful. I also miss the middle section of the tune, and can't think why it is never used in the context of hymn-setting.

This is the best, most haunting arrangement of this song/ I've been trying for years to find an album version of this arrangement. Grew up hearing this at home from the David Willcocks King's Choir Christmas album my dad used to play.

Finally, found the Holy Grail, this arrangement on Apple Music. Not sure why every choir doesn't do this version. music.apple.com/us/album/christmas-from-worcester-a-tribute-to-sir-david-willcocks/1177596014

Lyrics: Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love divine; Love was born at Christmas, Star and angels gave the sign. Worship we the Godhead, Love incarnate, Love divine; Worship we our Jesus: But wherewith for sacred sign? Love shall be our token, Love be yours and love be mine, ‘Love to God and all men, Love for plea and gift and sign.

A beautiful piece, sung here funereally slow, almost unrecognizable to me. It should be twice as fast and lighter..
@realdealsd Жыл бұрын
This arrangement is marked at a tempo of 60 beats per minute. As such, the expected duration would be 2:12 if the tempo was kept exactly. The choir sang the piece in 2:20, so pretty reasonably on tempo.

this is a reflective piece in this form. the tempo is perfect

Andante e legato is Willcock's marking for this. Just because you know it in a very fast version, doesn't mean that that is the correct tempo. The more often-sung Pettman version is marked at 72, and there's this version by The Sixteen kzbin.info/www/bejne/gl61p2CAaZuarK8si=St5U0BPQuQaI7A99. In fact, if you do some research, you'll find that the slower tempi are by far the majority interpretations. As with all "traditional" folk music, there are a number of notational and performance options, most/all of which will be correct. If you knew how the melody is sung in the Basque region, you might have a different, more accurate concept of how this "should" be performed. There is simply not such a thing in music as "should" - other than if you have done a great deal of deep research, and come to a knowledgeable, informed critical decision. Even then, your decision is "editorial" at best. I wonder what research leads you to the idea that this "should be twice as fast".

The sheer size of Saint-Sulpice, plus its highly reverberant acoustics, make a successful performance of this choral masterwork that much more difficult. Nevertheless, these singers pulled it off to utter perfection!! Well done!!

Like it, but I'm a little curious about the ORDER of the verses, placing "My gracious master...." at the end. In the original, the opening verses are "chained", and this verse comes second, beginning by echoing "grace" from the end of v.1, and ending with "name", which is then picked up at the start of (original) v. 3, "Jesus the name..." Anyway, is this re-ordering a common one, I wonder?

You have to love certain aspects of the 18th century. The composer of Lyngham was Thomas Jarman, who was by trade, a tailor. The inventor of the marine chronometer was John Harrison, who was by trade a carpenter. They don't call it the "Age of Enlightenment" for nothing, and this impetus to explore, create, and invent, comes from God too.

I used to listen to Rock N Roll before I trusted Jesus as my Saviour. I think that pop music gratifies the flesh and hymns gratify the soul and spirit and they also praise God our Father at the same time.
@TheEaglet112 жыл бұрын
The tune is Lyngham, which is the standard tune used in UK churches - or at least the ones where I've worshiped. The bass line takes a little time to pick up but is immensely satisfying when it all comes together!
