Van builds over all are pretty poor, electrical systems are just one part of that. I pulled a system out of a 80k van that was appalling. The inverter was powered through a 20A switch via 8awg wire over about 4 meters. No wonder ït wasn't working. This was the same 8g feed that the whole system was fed from via the same switch panel. The fridge was never running efficiently because of it. 240v and 12v wires were used across both systems with common grounds between the 2. An absolute nightmare to try and trace.

Thanks for your comment! While we install both Cowfish antennas and Starlink dishes based on customer preference, we often lean towards Starlink for its reliable high-speed internet, especially in remote areas. With a solid power setup, Starlink can provide consistent connectivity, making it ideal for streaming and video calls. If you're looking for reliable internet while on the road, Starlink is definitely worth considering!

My wife and I will be retiring soon, and we are on the lookout for a caravan that we can travel around Australia in. We have been looking for over 2 years, and it always comes down to how long we can stay off the grid for. And the answers ranger from, "I need to look that up or "they just shoot in the dark and just lie to you. I have a 2018 triton manual. My question is, what is the most reliable caravan on the market that my car can tow?
@outechoffgrid
@outechoffgrid 23 күн бұрын
Unfortunately with smaller dual cab utes like the triton you are definitely weight limited. However, you should be able to find a suitable smaller 18ft van with a great layout to suit you and your triton. We don’t recommend van manufacturers specifically as each one has their own pros and cons. Find a layout you like, then make sure the chassis construction is sound.

i have to ask based on the a 620ah 12.8v battery, do you not think it is worth based on a induction cooktop plus ac unit possible of doing up to 7kw across say 4 burners pus the ac, that a 48v system be a better option for wiring and efficiency?
@outechoffgrid
@outechoffgrid 23 күн бұрын
Not necessarily. There are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration with battery voltage including cost, efficiency and what charging sources are available. There are definitely advantages to 48v in terms of output, cable sizing and efficiency. However there are also disadvantages also like the need to series the solar array and a limited number of 12/48v DCDC chargers. As technology improves 48v will be a much more likely option for all high powered electrical installations in caravans.

The revised standard don’t exclude batteries under the bed. They exclude batteries inside the habitable space without a barrier or separation. I'm just a diy guy that's done all the electrical work to my ute and this install as you've basically said is an absoulute shit install. I've used two shunts, one victron the for lead acid second battery under the bonnet and a itech one for the lithium in the canopy. Both have around max 150mm cables of 2awg running from the negative to the shunts which is probably heavier than it needs to be but overkill is good and all negative leads for each battery come off that shunt. For me this sort of work is easy to figure out, if I need to run an inverter and I need 4 awg I'll up it to 2awg because why not.

Can the BMPro 35...HA system be retained for the budget functionality and then add an inverter and MPPT for the extra solar on roof? I have heard that BMPro is more reliable than the Projecta system that is being installed in many new builds? Basic manufacture build def seems the way to go. Then add afterwards as required. Unless it's changed, Victoria treats caravans/motorhomes as appliances so all electrical work can be DIY. The standards still need to be followed though. That is a massive improvement, really nice work. Is that fuse near the battery isolator for battery fusing or inverter? Assuming inverter as it looks as if there is another run of positive running up behind the conduit. If the client hadn't had such a quality inverter already, would it be best to look at 24v battery/inverter/solar for these sort of heavy loads with something like an Option to down convert to 12v?
@outechoffgrid
@outechoffgrid Ай бұрын
We would always take consideration to 24/48v systems if we were starting from scratch. It’s a definite load requirement vs cost vs efficiency question. It also sometimes comes down to roof space to determine what we can do with solar also. 3000w is definitely the max we would do at 12v. As you can see the cabling is large and quite short. Plus the 12v efficiency of the inverter is lower than a 24/48 option. There are a lot of factors. If you are looking for high power setups then 24/48v is a more suitable option.

An electrician with good off grid solar and caravan experience is needed, which is not easy to find. Maybe go to an electrical engineer to design the system and then less experienced trades can do the install and the engineer comes back to certify the installation is up to standard. I believe the new standard for lithium batteries fitted inside a van is that they must have a vent to outside - can anyone confirm this?

I installed my own system, my first inverter decided DEC 24 it only wanted to charge 3A, (13 days for a full charge at that rate) upon further assistance from my dealer we discovered that the inverter was only charging to 60% of max battery capacity. I was instantly sent a replacement which worked but had severely low overcast power on pv 3 and 4 , even switching pv1 and 2 arrays in those ports would drop the pv by 90%, since it was my second not so perfect inverter Jon from solar online did a 20-hour trip to install another larger inverter which seems to work even better than the last 2, higher volts after sundown for starters, the first inverter was 3.6V lower every day. The second inverter used to make 400w of solar disappear, the new one only seems make 50 to 100w vanish on the way to the battery. That is the quik story but going deeper with the second inverter, at that point I only had 3 arrays and in overcast pv1 to 3 was 480w 780w 210w, we both assumed something was wrong with pv3 , checked everything even ran seperate cable to the inverter, no change, then I added the largest array pv4 a 3.3kw and pv1 to 4 went like this 480w 780w 105w 105w , these tests are done with no direct light. Seamed the inverter was not letting pv 3 and 4 contribute, even in discharge. Now with the new inverter 380w 420w 320w 340w, thick cloud. Nice that it is working but the bloated #'s from pv2 means all my calculations are way off, now with thick clouds I can only hope for 1300w, vs 750w x4 argh. It is a vertical array, so the power improves during snowpack, direct sun and snow all arrays will be over 3500w, PV4 should exceed 4000w.

I think the main problem is not the 230VAC side, which must be signed off by an electrician. The big problem is the 12VDC side of the installation. What qualifications are required for the 12VDC installer if they are not a Licensed Auto Electrician. My understanding any one can hold an Electrical Contractors License, but you must hold or work under a company that holds an Electrical Contractors Licence to charge money for work carrying out.

Also as PV and battery installations in domestic and commercial applications are increasing, you’ll likely find a lot more licenced sparks that know quite a lot about DC installations. Plus you’ll find that these types of sparks will apply a lot of their standards based knowledge to the complete installation. Including how pV cabling should be installed and how to protect against mixed voltages. The reason being, we have to as we are licenced.

Trying to get a sparky to do a small job on our van has been a joke. We are on the east coast and I have been messaging and calling sparkies to set our AC to run iff our new inverter RS3 3000W. I’ve up sized our cabling, replaced cables where the lugs would fall off with the slightest pressure. This is one of the higher end branded vans. Not happy with the auto sparky’s work. Looks like a dude was signing off on others work and not even inspecting it. I’m very happy with the upgrade I have done, as it is now done ti meet AS and to a tradesman like manner. Also, spoke to redarc, they said the OEM installer had plugged the inverter 240 to the wrong plug. Still works, just shows they did not know what they were doing.

It is extremely rare to see a quality job, but maybe I just get to see all the dud jobs as rectification work on caravans seems endless.
