I don’t see 500k+ in student loans for dental school being worth it in this generation honestly. This is why I’m gonna apply to Ontario schools where the final debt will be around 200k or look for a backup plan

These svideos are great. Fair and balanced. This refrain is not completely unique - in medicine there are many modes of employment that are similar to this but dentistry is the ultimate in "piecework:" Such a noble profession and it is sad that the burnout (oops Moral Injury) rate is so high. Despite the misgivings, taking care of lives is an immense privilege - and I am supporting, but not pushing, both of my children's choices to go to medical school. Good content overall!

This explains why the dentist office is one of the most traumatic experiences every time! Sounds like this profession needs a overhaul.

I am soooo screwed. I'll never be able to eat again and I've had sepsis once. Next time I was told I prob won't be so lucky. I am at my wits end. My own son doesn't want me at his wedding- and I can't blame him but it doesn't hurt me any less I'm devastated but I get it. He's not used to my teeth like this. I had beautiful teeth and unfortunately I inherited the severe gum problems that most of my family got. So I hit my 40's. Took what I had saved and it was wasted on a dentist, that didn't even handle my problem. They just did extra work I didn't have the money for. And I've also had problems x10 ever since that happened I don't think I've had one good experience with ANY dentist. But I'm too insecure to let fear stop me. Whenever I get the money. Which at this rate. I'll probably be dead first.

I’m 68 years old and can’t afford to go to the dentist. My teeth are not in good condition, and when you can’t afford to get the little things fixed, they turn into big problems that cost even more. It is a shame all the way around. So sad.

Dental and vision are the two things that people need the most, and the two things that insurance barely pays for. The insurance industry is such a scam, but you have to have it.

I had a dentist who was close to retirement and he sabotaged my root canal which led me to lose the tooth entirely and have thousands of dollars to remove roots, tooth bits and a root extraction. Its super frustrating and Im still angry about it 10 years later.

Moral of the story, don’t get off your A game once you start practicing. Never stop learning. You need to be able to run the practice by yourself and be able to keep tabs on what people are doing at the front office. Especially when it comes to dealing with other people. Many dentists are underexposed to dealing with the public once they start practicing. Learning about human nature is a crucial skill for success in life in general. Manage YOUR expectations BEFORE you start practicing.

Anything healthcare is corrupt in the US. $500,000 to be a dentist.. which Is then passed down to the patient… -But we can’t blame the dentist passing down the cost to patient because a dentist needs to get by…

No person should think of suicide because of work stress. Not only dentists but many people quit work due to stress: doctors, nurses, teachers, and police officers.

You said that there are better ways to make money than becoming a dentist. Could you give a few examples because the plan for me was always to go to college and get a job. Are you referring that you can go to college and choose a different path than dentistry and make more money or following another path besides college? Thanks in advance.

So this boils down to corporate greed and modern slavery. No human should work more than 4 days (regular 8 hour shifts) a week. Same goes for schooling, 4 days a week, 8 hours a day. Full time jobs shouldn't be legal in my opinion because it's slavery in my opinion. People deserve to work less and earn more as technology evolves.

I wouldn’t really say that dentistry is commission based; I would call it “glorified” piece worker! It isn’t much different than a seamstress in a garment factory; If you aren’t putting out the work, you aren’t getting paid!

America does not have a health care system, we havr a "sick care" system. MEDICINE IS WAY MORE EXPENSIVE HERE, and in other countries they give you the right meds the first time. Because people dont have money or the time to waste expiramenting with different treatments. They want to get better now.

Dentists in the US don't know anything about occlusion and how the head, neck, posture, ligaments, etc. are all part of "dental" and whole body health. They're clueless! They rape their patients financially, and I know many people who were permanently damaged by them. The whole dental industry is a f*cking mess!!!

Need your teeth done go to belgrade in serbia way way way way cheaper. And way more honest. It's unbelievable. An impression for grinding a cavity and deep cleaning cost me 140 us. Root canal is like 120 with the crown. And there way more honest out there.

I think the most profitable is teaching people how to prevent tooth decay, periodontitis and malocclusion (read the Jaw epidemic article). The reward is in your practice, where healthy, happy people come to share their thankfulness for not having to get fillings, aligners or any other procedures done. Treating the cause, not the symptoms makes the job of a dentist way, way more satisfying and rewarding. The question is, how to make it financially sustainable. Maybe if insurance in the future prioritizes paying for staying healthy instead of covering ozempic etc., dentists can have lower suicide rates.

Apparently, pharmacists have a high unaliving rate, too. These careers take so much from you in terms of tuition and actual life experience (mostly in your 20s) and you're promised great things in return. But I've met several pharmacists so far that end up burning out and wanting to do anything else. But how can you, when you're that far in debt? It's truly awful when this happens.
