If you want to use the same lenses, then you may consider the M6 Mark II. If you are going to sell the current kit and you are on a budget, I would consider the R50, which is a great camera for the price (see my related videos). If you move away from Canon and you are on a budget, the Lumix G9 is a great value used.

For micro 4/3 lenses, the field of view of some of the viewfinders is smaller than the FoV of a lens. For example, brightlines on Olympus VF-1 match perfectly with the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens (40mm full frame equivalent), or Lumix 24mm match almost perfectly with the Leica 15mm f/1.7 lens (30mm full frame equivalent). A brilliant combo is Ricoh GV1 with a 21/28mm viewfinder, which I pair with Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 pancake + proprietary DMW GWC1 wide angle converter. This way, it serves both focal lengths with or without a converter. Also Voightlander 15mm viewfinder match perfectly with the 14mm pancake with a Panasonic GFC1 converter.

Do you consider the M-mount Brightin Star 35mm 0.95 worthy of the M6II's sensor? How about recommending some adapted zoom lens?
@uncunvenchunalwisdomАй бұрын
The reason to buy the Brightin Star is for it's BOKEH, not for its critical sharpness. It probably doesn't stand up to the very demanding sensor in the M6II in that regard, but I don't think that is it's purpose. To be honest, I have not used any adapted zooms with the M6II.

I find the CDAF on the G9 excellent, especially with the latest firmware updates, it is super fast and very accurate. It can get lost in scenes with little contrast of course and I get it that the PDAF is the setup you want for tracking fast moving subjects. I have an Olympus camera with PDAF and it doesn't always nail the focus as accurately as the G9 does. The G9 is a great camera to use manual lenses, big viewfinder, peaking is there straight off when the MF lens is detected (Olympus you have to program it to a button, an extra step in the workflow), and it throws up the focal length setting screen on start up when you have a manual lens on it (Olympus you have to remember to do a menu dive). The G9 is a winner, they got so much right on the first release and what little they didn't has largely been fixed in firmware. You cap that off with the insanely low prices you can get mint copies second hand and it's probably the no-brainer of the century.

Glad you mentioned the EVF. I find that I depend on using an EVF. That is why I have tried using a Ricoh GRiii and couldn’t get use to just using the LCD. As you point out, the portable EVF is as expensive as the GX1 body. That is very strange. This small body has tiny battery. If going out for a day of shooting it is necessary to bring spares. Fortunately 2nd party batteries are cheap and light. I own a GX1 with the viewfinder but haven’t used it in a while. At the moment I’m in love with the GX1’s grandchildren, the GX85/9. Took them to NYC for a week of street photography. I love the small LUMIX primes but have been using the kit 12-60 lens on these bodies. Can’t beat the choice of focal lengths offered by this lens. I have this camera and do not really care about AF or zoom. I am also on a budget and curious if a vintage lens would work well at handling the sensor size. For example, one of the 50mm F1.4 from Nikon, Minolta, etc ? Seems they may work well as the image is basically captured more in the center of the lens, and minimze soft edges? Widely available for less than $100. Thanks.
@uncunvenchunalwisdomАй бұрын
A 50mm full frame lens on the M6 Mark II, will be very similar to an 85mm on a full frame camera. You are correct about the softness of the corners not being evident because they are cropped out. None of the vintage 50mm lenses will resolve to the full power of this sensor, even in the center at the best fstop. But that is true of many of the lenses Canon made for this camera, so it may not matter. I just bought a beautiful Canon FD f1.4 SSC lens on Ebay for less than $65 including shipping. There are lots of good vintage 50mm lenses for under $100. Sometimes you can get one on a good film camera for the same price as the lens by itself. My favorite lenses of this type are the Canon FD early models with the silver ring for the bayonet mount and the Minolta Rokkor X MC lenses. I have a problems with Nikon lenses loosing their dampening for the focus mechanism.

Hi! Thank you for your great review. The Brightstar lens, is a great recommendation! I have a question regarding my next camera purchase, because you have reviewed both of them: G9 and Canon M6 II. I own cameras from both brands, original Canon eos M with magic lantern and Lumix GX80/85 and G100. Have some primes and kit lenses for both. I want to upgrade but I can't decide. Both are in the same price range. I have seen many reviews but I would like to hear your opinion as you've used both. Mostly, I use my cameras for photography: portraits, street and landscapes. But I'm more and more interested in video. Mostly I'm familiar with their strength and weaknesses, but what I don't know how the two sensors compare. Is the mft 20 mp sensor a match for the larger 32 mp sensor? Is there a difference in IQ and dynamic range in photos? Thank you in advance for your answer.
@uncunvenchunalwisdomАй бұрын
The short answer for me is if I could only have one, it would be the G9. It is weather sealed and has fantastic image stabilization and the Canon has neither. There are way more lenses available for the G9 at all price levels, sizes, etc. With my post production work flow (I shoot raw) the sensor size really doesn't matter. The G9 is also a better video camera. If you need a bigger sensor for some reason and you want a big sensor and a tiny body with Canon's in camera JPEG, then go for the Canon, otherwise, I would go for the G9.
@andrasgergely405Ай бұрын

I am shooting some film now and enjoying the experience. Even the best mirrorless cameras aren't as good for manual focusing as a split screen microprism with a bright viewfinder and an f1.4 lens :). I only use film for certain types of shooting and it is very low volume. I am quite careful about each shot and I often wonder how long it is going to take me to get through a roll of 36. Fortunately, I have very affordable local processing and my own scanner, so the cost isn't significant given the low volume. It is fun, but I wouldn't want to do it professionally.

Part two of my earlier comments: On using square format like 6x6 cm, yes you will be shooting square negatives and getting square photos from a basic lab, but that is not the end of the road. As I wrote earlier in the comments, that square negative opens the door to more choices than the 24x36. You will be able to make choices unless you took a portrait close-up where cropping may be difficult. But here is what you will learn by shooting. As you will look in your finder, ask yourself quickly what you want to end end up with. Are you shooting a nice car from the side (horiz) or the Eiffel Tower (vert) your cute girlfriend ? ( square, or vert )you see what I mean. 35mm dictates pretty well what your picture size will be, unless you do big cropping for avertical. So 35mm is super popular but 6X6 offers more choices down the road. Go for Rollei, Yashica, Minolta and there are more to check out. Enjoy !

to robbrown3543 ! I love your honesty !! I also stopped using film almost right away !! But…I still consider film as the grandfather of digital and the “true” medium of photography since we end with an image on film, a film that “saw” what we saw ! But otherwise I admit that silver grains or pixels are pretty close to being the same thing….or is it ? The money saving of course plays a big role in making the choice. What I dislike is people thinking that using a phone, a flat kleenex type box, is good enough to take along to a great trip, a cruise maybe, and take photos with just one hand vertically most of the time even for the grand Canyon or their car ! Also, crooked shots are now called “great shots” ! and I say “thank you phone photography”.

Hi JB ! I’m your identical copy ! First wedding coverage at 20 with a Zeiss Ikoflex bought my own studio once out of the service and shot my portraits on a huge Kodak portrait camera using 5x7 sheet film , 2 shots on one sheet or one full 5x7 . I shot my weddings on 4x5 as smaller was not considered “serious” until using the Rolleiflex was fine by the early 60’s or so . Now, this was a great education !! So, I would say to young enthusiastic people “yes, go ahead, spend what you can into BW photography, then color and you will never regret it….” Also, I would like to stress one thing….If we ask someone on the street what is the size of film nowaday and before, the answer would most likely be “35 mm of course. What about 620 and 120 which were the biggest sellers for any years due to its beautiful size. Great photographers made 35mm acceptable for good amateurs and during the korean war for war correspondents who discovered the Japanese quality in Nikon, Canon and Minolta. The images from 35mm film are not really offering the best proportions, Minolta recognized that when they built their 35 Super with a 24x34 image, not 24x36. Now 6x6 cm on 120 rolls that I mentioned earlier do offer a special proportion. Some people miss the point thinking you will be always taking square photos ! Wrong ! You will have the choice of cropping to verticals or horizontals later on and will never have to move your camera to do that ! The choice will be great and will be fun too ! Enjoy film photography !😊

I picked one up a few months back. I shoot on a Minolta CLE for my street photography so carrying a much larger digital mirrorless didn't make sense. What made sense was to use a couple of EF-M lenses and borrow a few rangefinding Leica M-mount. I suspect the market disruption for the pandemic undid any future plans they had.

Hi, I'm enjoying the video but I think I'm about to show my ignorance. I understand that the 17mm ovf will give a 34/35mm full frame equivalent view on micro four thirds but on the Canon apsc surely it won't match the 22mm (35mm equivalent) as the crop factor is 1.6 on the M6. doesn't that give the ovf a 28mm field of view?
@uncunvenchunalwisdom3 ай бұрын
1.6 x 22 = 35.2 for the Canon lens full frame. 2x17=34 for the OVF as it is speced for Micro 4/3. It is almost a perfect match.
