While I'm not a "Safety Sally" I'd like to mention that there probably should have been a feather board or two used on the 2 x 4" side piece dado work? Quick and easy to make and having owned and used my Shopsmith for many years I know that I would be using them - especially on awkward, tall, end grain work.
@IceManTX69

Yes, you are correct! I have the plastic SS feather board and I should have definitely been using it. I had got the SS from my mom and only had it for a brief time when I made this video. Learned a lot of lessons in the beginning the hard way and luckily I still have all my fingers. I did some stupid and shady things.....

Do you have an HOA for your neighborhood? They allow bees or how did you circumvent the HOA?
@IceManTX69
@IceManTX69 8 ай бұрын
There is no HOA, thankfully and Plano, TX allows you to have 2 full hives and a Nuc in your backyard as long as you have an 8' fence. That allows the bees to get way above head level before they leave the yard.

I think the hole was drilled too close to the bottom of the bucket which won't allow the curved side of the bucket to flatten out to conform to the gate. IMHO
@IceManTX69
@IceManTX69 Жыл бұрын
Thank you, that will be good info for others. I still use that bucket and it worked well for about 7 years. But last year it did start to leak so I removed the gate, cleaned it and the bucket and reinstalled it with new silicone around it.
@warrencfleischer7430
@warrencfleischer7430 Жыл бұрын
@@IceManTX69 I'm sure using silicone sealer does a fine job, and there is the advantage of having the gate as close to the bottom as possible. Whatever works best for each of us! Thanks

Just a thought... have you considered putting your electric drill on a dimmer switch? Then, you could tape the trigger into the "ON" position... and gradually move the dimmer switch until you increase the speed to where it extracts the honey. 🤷
@IceManTX69
@IceManTX69 Жыл бұрын
Thanks! That is a good tip, but I was lucky enough to get a new corded drill for Xmas a couple of years ago that lets me set the speed.

I use gravel, so that there is water in the nooks and crannies and the bees can easily land on it to get a drink without drowning. I like how it is based sort of on the sugar water feeders I use on my hives, with a jar of sugar water slowly feeding down in a vacuum.

What type of wood was used? How did you fix any “bow” in the boards? I bought some 1x10 and they all have slight bowing in them.
@IceManTX69

I used pine. If the wood is warped I don’t know what you could do. Home Depot wood is really bad. I usually have to sort through several boards to find a really good one.

I have liked both videos on this DIY extractor you built, the build and then use of the extractor. In my search for great DIY plans, I have come across a couple other tips that may Help. First you've heard already and that is to support top of extractor, second is to add a one way bearing and coupler to the top of the shaft of extractor. this bearing allows you to spin the center piece and when you let go of the trigger for the drill it allows the extractor to spin freely without coming to an abrupt stop.

Why is the frame very lengthy? Instead of 19 inches, like can we make to 12 inches or something smaller? And wat difference will it make?
@IceManTX69
@IceManTX69 2 жыл бұрын
These specifications are for a Langstroth hive and that is the dimensions. You do not want any extra open space in the box so the frames need to match the box size. I've seen all types of hives and you can make them smaller.

Question: Could you not cut the cut away parts from the bottom of the side bars while they are still in the 2x4 mode and then cut the side bars apart after to avoid hand cutting every little cut away part on each one?

Simplest and cheapest way is to buy a used 6 speed food mixer and mount a piece of wood or metal across the top. then make a simple frame like you have made or one out of wood. On the base below frame holder mount another piece of wood for the frame to slot into the centre so it pivots as it spins without frame holder touching side. Using something like a plastic rain catching barrel is much taller and a large 2 inch tap can be mounted at the base along with sieves. The drum is much wider so a double frame could be mounted (one frame either side) so this means frames would empty both sides at the same time and not collapse. You would always start on low speed and speed up as they empty. Also much easier to clean being just one drum...

Asking for a friend, would it make more sense to uncap (scrape) both sides of the frame/comb to allow the honey to flow more freely?
@IceManTX69
@IceManTX69 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know what effect that would have. Due to centrifugal force, only the outside cells are going to release honey as it spins. The honey on the inside cells is just being forced deeper into the comb because they are facing backwards,

It would be best if you put the oil in early so it can mix with the pressure of the water. Lemongrass is an attractant used for swarms, and can attract other flying insects: wasps, and yellow jackets. So, I would just use the bleach.
