Dude, I’m reading the book now and stumbled upon this. I hope you got an A on your project! Stylistically this reminds me a lot of the history of Japan video that went viral.

1. Well, the Japanese 'did' possess the ability to aim their main batteries by radar. Yamato was in fact using radar- assisted gunnery off Samar. The first- salvo hit which Yamato registered on Gambier Bay- at just under 22,000 yards- was aimed soley by the ship's Type 22 radar because Yamato lacked a visual to Gambier Bay until approximately one minute after she opened fire. 2. Chokai's torpedoes in her launchers were not detonated by a hit from White Plains' 5" gun. 3. Over 300 United States Navy aircraft participated in the battle. 4. Without taking anything away from the courageous efforts of the crews of our surface warships, the fact is that the Japanese warships sunk off Samar were sunk primarily as a result of air attacks. Otherwise, a fairly good video.

Today 2023 we have more information about this battle, it explains more of what and why it happened. IJN Yamato was “wounded”, two armor piercing bombs already had struck it and it had taken a lot of tons of water. Apparently all sunk American ships were hit by Yamato’s primary and secondary artillery… one against one of the destroyers at 19 nautical miles distance making it the longest naval hit in history, by a lot! The IJN battleship group was not looking for a naval fight but to destroy the invading US force… the delay was enough to defeat this plan, so it’s nonsensical to claim the retreat to be a defeat, not reaching their destination was everything… probably the war would have lasted months if not until 1946 if this delay didn’t happened. IJN Yamato wounded was able to sink 4 ships and assist in the sinking of a 5th apparently. The USN Destroyers and Destroyer Escorts did the brave action in order to save the escort carriers, IMO these are the heroes of the battle… and villain must be the main US fleet’s commander. The discovery of the “little destroyer who fought like a battleship” is evidence of the three 18.1” hits, and how the crew claiming they were 14-15” was a confusion only, who can blame them (shells went thru with out exploding, aka “tin cans”) This story from both sides deserves to be made public thru television or movie… but then again so many more deserve that chance too. Enough remakes! Geez

The only differences between the narrator's cartoon voice-over and Drachinifel's much more professional - and much more entertaining - narration is this page's almost word-for-word description of said Drachinifel but delivered with an annoying VO and equally annoying graphics. When are your braces getting removed?

The funny thing is the Japanese were missing at first because they were convinced no mere destroyer would charge like that. They thought it was a battleship or at minimum a heavy cruiser. Therefore they thought it was a larger ship further away, and aimed over the destroyer until they were so close they could aim down enough to hit them at all

I just watched another version of this, of about the same length, with 800,000 views and 25,000 likes and this version is 100x times better in literally every way. (Sadly, we do have a slight correct as Chokai's torpedoes were eventually found to be unexploded, meaning White Plains probably doesn't get credit for the kill, though they definitely get credit for scoring several hits. ) I especially appreciate the bit at the end, where you take a minute to talk about all the mistakes that lead up to the battle and caused the disaster of the aftermath. Incredibly well-done!

See the photo @ 0.27. That is the USS White Plains _sinking_ IJN Chokai with a lucky hit on the torpedo tubes, blowing whole ship to SMITHEREENS! Yarggh! The substack of tcinla has that photo and the whole account of the solo 5-inch gunner hitting _Chokai_ 6 times at the gun's maximum range of 11,700 yards. That's about 6 nautical miles, within range of the gigantic Japanese 24-inch torpedoes. It seems likely to me the Chokai had her torpedo tubes trained outboard, about to fire, as opposed to tucked in to the ports in her hull where they would be protected from arcing fire from the 5-inch gun at maximum range. However this narrator, like most others, gives only partial credit to USS White Plains. But the photo says it all. And that gun was manually laid (aimed), no fancy fire control radar or turret like on a destroyer. That gunner knew his craft and shoulda got the Navy Cross or sumpin'.

The wreck of Chokai has been found, and she was not hit by the US CVE, and her torps had hence not exploded, but she had a bunch of 14" holes in her, so the IJN cruiser was actually hit by Kongo or Haruna !? Besides it was the 400 or so US aircrafts that did the most damage to the Japanese force.

They don't mention the escort carrier's airplanes. While most didn't have proper anti ship weapons(torpedoes, armor piercing bombs). Instead they dropped depth charges on the jspanese ships, High explosive bombs[intended for land targets], fired rockets, strafed with their machine guns, and buzzed the Japanese ships. This added to the damage the destroyers and destroyer escorts did, This 'discombobulated' Admiral Kurita so badly that he decided to break off the battle, and retreat. (-I am not belittling the contribution of Johnston and the others, just pointing out others helped) One more thing-there are two quotes I remember reading, from the battle. I do not know who said them, but here they are: 1. "We're suckering them into 40 millimeter range@" 2. When the Japanese broke off and retreated:"They're getting away!"

Fun fact: an Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate would be named after the Samuel B. Roberts. This Roberts would strike a mine which snapped her keel in two, almost always a death sentence for any ship. But apparently being named Samuel B. Roberts gives a ship the ability to spit in the eye of Davy Jones, because they managed to stop the flooding and reinforce the hull enough to make it to port. Another thing that wasn’t mentioned in the video was that just because they hadn’t had enough, after the battle Taffy 3 was attacked by the very first organized Kamikaze attack, which sank another escort carrier.

@@cfgeneric7677 No, the St Lo, not St Louis. Originally named Midway to commemorate the Battle of Midway, she was renamed Saint-Lô (after a battle during the D-Day invasion in France) to free up the name Midway to go on one of the new battle carriers. They always say that it is bad luck to change the name of the ship once it has been launched. Changing the name of a ship or boat is very bad luck. She was sunk on Oct 25th, 15 days after the name change.

Do note the importance of Taffy 1 and especially Taffy 2 in launching air attacks against Centre Force. Especially because Taffy 2 had anti-ship weapons like aerial torpedoes even from the start of the battle, making them actually dangerous (Taffy 1 and Taffy 3 rearmed later in the battle for the same reason).

One other thing that was going on, that sometimes gets missed is the planes. The Japanese Navy had no air cover. They had just lost several hundred planes the week before Leyte began when an American Carrier force snuck to Formosa (Taiwan) and in three days of non stop attacks had pulverized the last remnants of Japanese naval air power. The Japanese Navy sent every plane they had into that fight only to lose them all. All the planes that were supposed to protect Kurita’s fleet. So Kurita sailed without knowing he would not have any air cover. He found out about it the day before Samar, when the full force of the 15 Fleet Carrier 3rd Fleets AirPower fell on him in the Siobyan Straight. Sinking 3 Cruisers and the Yamato’s sister the Musashi. Halsey went to chase the decoy because he thought Kurita was in retreat. Then when Kurita popped up in front of Taffy 3, Admireal Spague had his 6 escort Carriers launch every plane. They were only armed for ground attacks and anti sub patrols. Nothing that would harm a Battleship. But after the day before the Japanese couldn’t ignore them. So the Taffy 6 Avengers and FN2 Wildcats bravely harassed the Japanese ships. Dropped small fragmentation bombs and Napalm on them. Dropped depth charges on the ships. Straffed them until they ran out of ammo, then kept still making attack runs forcing the Japanese to maneuver and react. The Japanese were fighting a swarm of angry bees while the Johnston was crotch kicking them. And then the planes from Taffy 2 and Taffy 1 started showing up. They were coming in in more organized waves. And Taffy 1 had even managed to get a few Torpedos and AP bombs loaded. Kurita thought they were Halsey’s 3rd fleet arriving, and without air cover he would have no chance. That’s when he decided to call it a day. Also it wasn’t a “nice day. It was overcast with scattered squalls. The Japanese were never able to get a good look at what they were facing. They never realized it was just a handful of small unarmored ships. All Kurita could see was mostly his own ships on fire. Well that and the completely Mad Dog insane Johnston attacking and sinking his cruisers. Sammy B’s Star Shells plus a few scattered canisters of Napalm made Kurita think his ships were much more damaged then they were.
@rwaitt14153
@rwaitt14153 Жыл бұрын
100% correct. The importance and bravery of the Navy airmen during this battle are continuously understated. Even if Kurita managed to destroy and drive off Taffy 3, they would have kept up their attacks. The other Taffys were refueling and rearming planes as quick as they could and throwing them back into the fight. Even the primitive airstrips on Leyte were getting into the action. One pilot, er... Naval Aviator, led a team off into the jungle to scrounge a spare wing off of a wreck to put his plane back into the air during the fight. The battle was organized chaos across the board and quite frankly I don't think the Japanese were ready for that kind of response. The weaker side was supposed to demure in a near peer engagement. But they didn't because they were so incredibly weak that it wasn't near peer. It was a last stand action that should be fought to the death. So that is what they did.

The brave sailors who on the morning of October 25, 1944 accomplished something astounding. These small Destroyers, primarily the USS Hoel, USS Heerman, USS Johnston and the USS Samuel B. Roberts were able to disperse and retreat a far superior Japanese Fleet whose flagship was the largest warship in the world, the IJN Yamato. The Japanese didn't realize that they could have blown through the American Escort Carrier groups without much risk, killing thousands and sinking every American ship in sight. Because of the aggressive and heroic nature of our attacking Destroyers, these men saved thousands of lives. After the war, Imperial Japanese Navy's Admiral Kurita was debriefed by the U.S. military: "I moved only with the knowledge that I was able to acquire with my own eyes and did not realize how close I was to Victory. I see now that it was very regrettable that I did not push on at the time." It was the men on these Destroyers who stopped him. To say we are proud of them is an understatement. We are deeply thankful for their service and for their sacrifices for the privileges of freedom. These were warriors when our Country asked.
