I cut down a pontoon boat from 8 x 20 to 6x20 im trying to put a mud motor on it.... I bought a home made used one..... the knuckle was shot so ii replaced it.. well it shake rattles n rolls I figure the angle of the shafts to much so im going to move the angle up and replace the 6ft shaft with a 10 ft shaft,. what do you think?

I am on the tail end of building one similar and find that warping had been a bigger issue than I expected, had to cut off and redo 2 welds today on the skag bc of it. Waiting on the bushing material to come in now to complete my build.

I have some questions for you about the bearings. I am stumped and sure could use some pointers. Like what brand and kind of bearings did you use.
@herlihy4335 жыл бұрын
Hi there, I'm a good friend of Tabs and I helped him build his mud motor. The way we did his bearings was we welded a 1" socket weld coupling onto the shaft housing (DOM) ,then we welded( if I remember correctly) a piece of 1½ pipe onto it, stuffed that pipe with three 1½ bearings, slid the shaft into the the housing and bearings, then topped it off with a locking collar around the ¾ shaft. I can send you pics if you like of a mock up I did so I wouldn't forget how I did it.
@herlihy4335 жыл бұрын
The bearings were 1½ x ¾ sealed bearings from ebay.

Hey Tab, just wondering...why you didnt turn the old transom mount from the outboard around to the inside of the boat...and use the vertical swivel section for part of your mount. Just curious probably a reason im not seeing from the angles of the video. But it looks great. You did a very professional job.

It is a good idea, but with the universal joint having such a high angle to operate in, the propeller will not rotate as a" constant velocity joint" and will introduce non constant rotation fatigue on the shaft, so I wonder how long it will last.
@kennyf.88278 жыл бұрын
You are correct in stating the inconstant rotational velocity; however, all non-straight drive shafts are put under this strain and are only smoothed by a second universal joint. Put simply you are just removing the later part of the mechanism and should not have any mechanical issues. This will will however give the propeller an inconsistent rotational speed but would probably be unnoticeable.

Great workmanship. I have always been interested in these motors. What I don't understand is almost all boat have fire extinguishers visible, RIGHT BESIDE THE MOTOR. Is it not best to have the extinguisher as far away from the source of flame as possible? You end up getting burned before you get to use the extinguisher.

Great video, you did an awesome job on your set up.. I wanted to build 1 of these 15 years ago but didn't have the knowledge & equipment I've got now. I did get as far as drawing it out on paper, lol.. Only place that had em was mud buddy the kit they sold was pricey, I wanted to build it anyway get more satisfaction & actually learn somethin. Thank you for being decent & sharing w/ us,

So there were these 2 guys gigging frogs (or mullet, if you like!) from their jon boat. The guy up front sat on the bow with his feet hanging over the front, dangling in the water. He shone his headlight till he saw 2 eyes and gigged right in between em and dropped the frog into his gunny sack. After a while he gigged one and when he pulled it up, there was a water moccasin had grabbed the back end of the frog and was eating it! Well, that feller pondered it all for a moment, then reached back and pulled his Jack Daniel flask out of his pocket and dribbled a few drops into that moccasin's mouth. It spit out the frog, the guy yelled to the driver to get him outa there and soon, they were gigging frogs again, happy as clams. Suddenly the man felt a tug on his pant leg and looked down. There was that water moccasin again with another frog for him - in trade for some more Jack Daniels!

A lot of repeat long shot pictures. Would prefer some closeup details. Not shown is how the Thrust is displaced from the prop. Where is the thrust bearing....or is there one?
@chordmerchant77879 жыл бұрын
Hey there Tab. I think I'd go with a CV joint boot, or a rubber boot from a rack and pinion steering setup. You should easily be able to find the perfect size for that u-joint. Plus, it'll be water tight! How do I find more information on plans/parts, etc? By the way, really nice job!
@chordmerchant77879 жыл бұрын
You said, "no generator" do you mean to charge your batteries? There should be a lighting/charging coil on that motor, if it has electric start. If it's AC, all you need to do is build or buy a full wave bridge to convert to DC. It's simple to do, but I would imagine it's read to go. Again, that's if it's electric start. I didn't look for it when I was watching the video.

An idea. Could you connect exhaust to the top down pipe with a flex hose, then drill some exit holes at the bottom near water level? That would mega quiet the motor! And since tube is stainless the exhaust gasses will never rust it out...
