Very well designed and giving excellent economic service. Also a pilots delight. But it looks very similar to Mitsubishi MU- 2B. Maybe a copy of it.

The article is kind of silly. The number of crashes is not only a question of plane's safety but also a matter of conditions in which it is being operated. L-410 is cost-efficient and durable plane and as such it is being operated in demanding conditions - in developping countries, in mountains, behind arctic circle, Africa, South America... Landing on unpaved strip in the middle of the jungle is definitely not as safe as on ILS equipped London Heathrow, that's right. Operating in conditions many L-410s deal with I doubt some "safe" B 777 would be still flying :). Btw, similar plane that came into my mind is de Havilland DHC-6: DHC-6 Twin Otter: 930+ produced / 274 hull loses / 1461 fatalities Let L-410: 1138+ produced / 102 hull loses / 423 fatalities

thejabiru Good points, I'd definitely rather ride in an Otter than one of the few DC-10's still in service. The 777 has a great record and is a pilot favorite. It doesn't do so well with Russian missiles or suicidal muslim pilots - 537 fatalities, zero deaths related to design flaw or mechanical failure. Outside of the Malaysia Airlines haul losses there have been 4 other HL's since 1995 - 3 deaths upon landing due to pilot error in San Francisco aboard Asiana Air, in the three other HL's all passengers and crew were able evacuate because of the 777's built in redundancy, safety and ruggedness in runway crash situations. The recent HL in Dubai of an Etihad plane is still under investigation. No doubt if 777's were used like rally cars in the polar regions or the 3rd world then they would not fare so well.
