Hi. I'm a math-loving homeschool dad. I just found your channel and watched a bunch of videos already and bought your savvy cards. So happy to support an independent content creator who is really sharing something of value. Excellent work!

Thanks for all your content! I teach grade 6 and I used the 8 number sense concepts to rethink my fraction unit this year, and my students understood fractions so much quicker and deeper than any other time I taught it. I intend to rethink all the number sense concepts to change the way I present them in the future. All this to say that I appreciate your content so much!

As a studying secondary maths teacher, I find it difficult to image how explicit instruction could be used during a maths class. I understand the benefit of explicit instruction in an English or HASS class where students can use their critical thinking skills to draw conclusions from multiple perspectives, however, when solving a math equation, there is only one correct solution. In a subject as complex as mathematics, I do not expect any students to just know how to solve calculations if they have not been taught in a direct manner previously.

Thanks for bringing up this topic. I love the message that it is socially acceptable to be a strong academic learner. I think when students go into higher graders, this becomes equated too much with being a "nerd." I hope this mindset can change and students see learning is so intrinsically rewarding in itself and trumps any external rewards.

Thank you, great tip. I have also found that children find it easier to 'think' about fractions on rectangle/ square examples. I'll try number lines more, this makes so much sense, esp. when correlating with percentage and decimals.

Right!? It's much easier to visualize fractions in a rectangular model than circles.

Hi Christina, Is a number path something that 1st graders can use within 40? I have some students that are struggling to transition to the open number line, but as I look for resources and examples, I can't find anything to show the use of a number path with larger numbers.

I'm really looking forward to this! As a former sufferer of Math anxiety, last year's webinar totally broke my brain and it's been reorganized! Thank you so much. I was hopeful to see Pam Harris again, and asked her if she was attending at a recent chat with her. She said she had not been invited this year. Perhaps you thought she didn't have anything new to share. She was really kind about it. But she does have a lot to share and she was why I signed up again for this session, and was spreading the word about this webinar. I would love to see her invited in the future, she makes a HUGE difference to those of us struggling. She compliments your program SO well!

It would be nice if you gave some actual examples of why students need to keep a fraction as greater than 1 instead turning it into a mixed number. I feel like that would also build their understanding of fractions. Is that in another video?

100% agree with you. Just saw this stupid thing for the first time in my daughter’s homework and immediately told her it was stupid. It is infuriating how they teach everything except what they need to teach in elementary school. I would lose my freaking mind if I had to learn math like this.

Before anything else, you have to teach what a second looks like, a minute looks like, an hour, half an after, a quarter of an hour, how many second in a minute, how many minutes in an hour, and then, once understood (more or less), tackle telling time both digitally and analogically. Just because we all live increasingly in a digitalized world does it mean the analogical clocks f time are extinct or irrelevant. Example: Do students even know how to use a ruler and how t measure using a ruler? Or knowing that while the US still uses imperial measurements, most of the rest of the world has moved to metrics. Thus, all the more reason why we teach students conversions from one to another. Telling time, in my view, is infinitely easier but first must come teaching them seconds, minutes, hour, 12 hours, 24 hours and all else in-between plus, then, converting second into minutes/hours and so on and so forth. Just my view.

Thanks, continue to share on time, measurement and money. I tutor many teenage students who struggle with measurement, money and time because it was supposed to be taught in another subject. Other subject area teachers do their best but are not usually mathematics specialists (and say things like 'hop the dot' for multiplying by 10). Examples like this are not helpful to students when trying to understand mathematics.

This entire system totally ruined me. In fact, because of this, it stunted how I perform calculating in my head. Irony is, I make Tabletop Roleplaying games as a huge part of my job (I use a lot of dice and have to add them), and because of this, I am unable to add ANYTHING without performing touch point. I have to touch tables or touch my own fingers, slowing everything down just to calculate anything. This makes me extremely calculator bound. When I was a kid, I couldn't calculate my times tables at the allotted time because touch point screwed me into learning times tables because it was incompatible. I was the only kid who didn't get a pizza party because I failed to reach my times tables to the 12th number. I absolutely CURSE this form of math and would never subject a child to this horrible technique.
