Ever since I discovered your channel (and get inspired for purchase), every time I run across some nature related title, I ask - has Liz something about this one? Recently I have bought Ecosfera, which surprised me positively. I thought whether it might fit into your porfolio? :-) I am pleased to se behind you several games I either own or consider... Good luck and I am looking forward to your videos.

I'm looking forward to watching the play through part when I have a little time - I played one game with a friend and it was fun, but I didn't feel like I understood how to use the patrons so we didn't do much with them. (I'm not a very experienced gamer, have played mostly Wingspan and Isle of Cats.) I did hear or read Elizabeth Hargrave say that she designs games by choosing themes that she wants to explore and then figures out what mechanisms would work best for them. And tries to balance accuracy with making something that is accessible for mid weight gaming, and not focused on negative interactions. I just found your channel so I am looking forward to exploring it more! I have a few science or nature themed games (Evolution, Genotype, Atiwa) that I want to try.

Wingspan and Isle of Cats are both fantastic games! For the patrons in The Fox Experiment, I think the key is to approach them like a puzzle bonus for your player board. 🙂 I hope you have fun exploring the channel! I have playthroughs for both Genotype and Atiwa. It's been a while since I played Evolution - it's a great game, I enjoy playing it, but it can sometimes be a little punishing.

About solo gaming - if someone says "get some friends", well, I have friends. We go hiking and to plays and movies and concerts. We talk about books. We talk about our lives and pet-sit for each other. They are not gamers. I can sometimes get some of them to try a board game, but they are used to more party-level games, which are less interesting to me. It is hard to develop a gaming group as an older single person, or when going to a gaming meet-up, to get into a game at the right level. So I appreciate solo gaming! I love Liz Davidson's podcast Beyond Solitaire.

What is your rating of this game?
@bitsandbiology
@bitsandbiology 17 күн бұрын
My current rating is 8.5 out of 10, but keep in mind that I have only played this game solo. I very much enjoy it as a solo game, and I think it would be very good at 2 players as well. I think higher player counts would very much depend on the people playing - if anybody is particularly prone to overthinking their turns, it might not be as much fun. I have a review at the end of my solo playthrough video for this game. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3KUd2egedCdb6M Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙂

Really great video. I love dinosaurs and the artwork is fantastic. I also like the gameplay and you did a great job to show how it's working. I do have a question. In the Turn Option aide it's said that we can activate one or two cards already in play. I noticed that you activate more that 2 cards in some rounds. Is this a miss or a error on the aide? Because it's seems to be really difficult to remember wich card you have activated or not.
@bitsandbiology
@bitsandbiology 20 күн бұрын
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! When you activate a card, you usually have to exhaust it (turn it on its side), which makes it easier to keep track of what you have used. When you play with other people, you are limited to activating one or two cards on your turn. This game works like Terraforming Mars, in that players take turns each round until everybody passes. When playing solo, your turns are one after the other, so you just keep taking actions until you pass. You are still limited to one "special action" per round. 🙂

Thanks for the vid! I haven't played this in a while and needed a reminder on how to play! What I like about this game is in part how many cards there are. Every time I play it I end up playing quite differently. One day I'm playing heavily into birds and research, next play I'm all over aquariums and African conservation projects. The solo is thoroughly enjoyable. Personally I tend to max out reputation in the solo. I'm a sucker for those rewards! I haven't played this multiplayer a lot. Mostly because it's a bit of a beast to teach someone and once taught, strategy hits you. It really needs a proper test run as first time players are easily destroyed. And nobody likes that (it's awful to lose that bad and it's not fun to win that way).

@bitsandbiology
@bitsandbiology 29 күн бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed it! The biggest rule change in the 2nd edition is that ecosystems no longer have to be in *consecutive* numerical order, they will just need to be in numerical order (a rule change you can implement in the 1st edition). Other than that, I don't think much is changing for the rules (but I could be wrong). The biggest change is that the 2nd edition will only contain enough cards for 2 players, instead of 4 players. They also made some other minor changes to components if I recall correctly. 🙂

This is a lovely little game. I've only gotten it recently, but I'm very happy with it. The art is gorgeous and it's great fun! On to hedgehogs: When I was a kid a hedgehog lived under our house. It'd hiss at us in the mornings :). We occasionally gave it an egg. I did, and still do live in a city, so, yeah: they absolutely show up in urban areas. Also saw a male hedgehog court a female in our front yard around the same time. Males will circle the female repeatedly and she'll snort/hiss at him - sometimes for hours - the ladies can be hard to impress! I watched the hissing-dance for a bit and left them alone. It was cool to see. I have no idea if he was successful, however :D

Also, like that you point out what possibly could have happened (e.g.,the AI when they could have gone beyond the max on the card). SO many games you put on my radar: March of the Ants and Lands of the Mesozoic especially look up my alley. I really loved the conversation about solo gaming. I actually was listening to that BGG podcast episode with Alan Moon and legitimately scoffed when I heard him make that joke about "get some friends". But, tbh I think that's a natural feeling at first. Now, I just have so much desire to play board games but not always the people or preparation to do it as a group. Library games!!!

September is less than half as long. 😂 Lands of the Mesozoic was so good! Once this semester is over, I will definitely be getting it back to the table. I'm sad Tom Vasel gave it a poor review, because that will probably tank any chance it had to get in front of more people. But I think Tom must have got a rule wrong, because he described never having enough cards and seemed to base his whole review off of that. I think he might have been discarding cards from his board when he should have been exhausting them, but that is only a guess. Hope your school year is treating you well! I bet you're looking forward to the winter break as much as I am!

Hi Steve! I'm sorry to not respond sooner! I don't know why I wasn't notified of your comment. This just happened with somebody else on another video, so I decided to check a few others. I do this more frequently in the solo game than in the multiplayer game because turns are so limited in the solo game, leaving not much time for relying on "luck of the draw." Thank you for video. Question about fox ability,.if players can't look, that.means they could choose take card randomly from that.pile? Also if they divide to not look and skip that pile they still need to add random card on the top? Does fox owner next round could look into that pile or rule would apply to him too? Also been ability,.if be owned choose to pay 1 food and take 1 card is he needs ad new.card.to.that pile ?
@bitsandbiology
@bitsandbiology Ай бұрын
For the Fox ability, it only applies to other players, so the owner of the Fox token could still look at the pile; if they decide to take the pile, the Fox token would come back to them in it's "used" state (grey side up). When other players decide to pass on the Fox pile, they do add a card to it. If they instead decide to take the Fox pile, they take the entire pile without looking. I hope that answers your Fox questions - let me know if it doesn't! I'm not sure about your last question, I don't recall a situation where you pay a food to take a card, but I'm happy to look it up if you clarify what you're asking. 🙂 I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Nice catch! Not sure what I was thinking. But I did have a temporary knowledge token at the time, and still two left over at the end of the game, so I *could* have gone to that lens space. But it was still an incorrect move the way I did it - oops! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙂

This looks like fun. I’m getting it. Thanks! I see they did koala rescue club. I play that one everyday. It’s so chill. Great video! I LOVED when you showed the 6 that rolled off screen. I laughed so hard 😂

I'm glad you enjoyed it! This is one of my favorite roll & write games. 😃 I have Koala Rescue Club on my table, laminated and ready to play, I just have to find the time, lol.😆 Thanks for watching and commenting!
