Why do you reckon algoma/CSL ships are generally in worse shape than the American side? Do they not do layup over the winter for maintenance? I know they go through more locks but surely that doesn’t entirely explain their haggard and weary exteriors. They’re not usually as old as the American ships either, and seem to get scrapped earlier.
@Spike-sk7qlКүн бұрын
That's a darn good question. Take a look at the Anderson. That ship is beautiful, for a ship that's on the downward side to 100.
@stephaniethomasson8812Күн бұрын
@ exactly!! And even though she’s had some major overhauls in her time, and isn’t the prettiest, the alpena is holding up like a champ, considering she’s the oldest on the lakes still in service.
@RitzBitz96Күн бұрын
I believe the earlier scrapping is down to the fact that it's easier for Canadian companies to replace their ships than it is for American companies to do the same. I'm not familiar with the exact details but I know there's a law that means American lakers have to be built in America, which is more expensive, but the Canadian companies can have their ships built anywhere. So the American companies have much more motivation to keep their ships running for a long time. Honestly though, considering that the Discovery spent 30 years operating in saltwater and was about to be scrapped before being bought by Algoma, I think she looks pretty great!
@stephaniethomasson8812Күн бұрын
@ that makes sense! And I didn’t know some of their ships started out as salties
@Spike-sk7qlКүн бұрын
@@RitzBitz96 Yes, American Lakers have to be built by American ship builders. That's why the last one was built in the early 2000s. It IS actually a good law to have, as I'm sure it kept some American ship yards in operation longer than without it. And you can't blame American shipbuilders who have to pay their guys more than $0.02 per day or something. Then when we wonder why stuff doesn't last like it used to, it's vecause the construction of said item is being carried out by a 12 year old, who works for 19 hours a day, for $1, and they use sub par materials. I'm actually impressed now, that the Algoma started her life as a salty. 30 years????? It's amazing it made it 30 years in the oceans. That is impressive!
