I think the logic used in the end of this video points to the best value in 2v cell/48v system - it is easier to test, maintain and remove 2v cells that are no longer performing as necessary. I could be wrong because I an just beginning this adventure of self powering our property - but - it makes more sense in terms of "isolating" the battery bank problems that will arise with single cells reducing capacity of our battery bank.

It's an old battery pack, more cells will fail and the three or more bad cells will drag down the good cells performance in discharging and charging. Make three packs with spare cells for the future. P.S. you know lifepo4 batteries have thousands of cycles before their capacity drops to 80%. Let them take the cycles while reducing the cycles in lead acid who's potential cycles is much less.

My 80yr old dad just passed in November of '23. He had worked for Harrison Radiator Division of GM for 40+ yrs. He had spent most of that time as a boiler code welder. When he retired he always wanted to set up a metal working shop here in our barn with 3 phase. Well that never happened. He was able to purchase some things from the plant where he spent the last 10 years because Delphi bought out Harrison and was closing it down. One of these 'goodies was a large fan which I believe has a 3hp motor. It was wired for 3 phase, my dad didn't know how to convert it, so it has just been sitting in our barn for 20yrs. I saw your video when it was fairly new, and shared it with my dad who got excited. The next thing we knew we were too busy to get into it. I felt like it was a carrot just dangling in front of me, but only inches from my grasp. Well, now I have a bit more time, so I'm studying up with all of your wonderful videos. I would test capacity. At least for a few worst and best cells. Ideally for all. If one cell in a pack has much smaller capacity then others, it will get faster to top voltage at charging and to low voltage at discharging. It will influence total voltage of the battery. Then I would put the battery to some kind of use. NiMh cells can revive after a few cycles. After they are not used for longer period, they tend to perform badly, but after been put in use, they can get in better shape. But not expect miracles with old cells. I am playing with old NiMh AA cells. They perform strange. Measuring internal resistance can't give you good proof of health also. OK; if IR is 100mohms or 2000mohms, you know the second one is bad. But capacity can tell you more, to decide what to do. There's another catch at charging. When NiNh get fully charged, they will pick up temperature, and the voltage will drop. Just to complicate charging more.

They often use N channel fets in both positive and negative side as they usually have better charectristics than P channel fets. They just need a gate drive that is 10v higher that the supply rather than ground. A dedicated H bridge driver uses capacitors in series with the supply to 'bootstrap' the gate voltage 10V above supply. It will be 4 banks of N fets in an H bridge configuration to the drive transformer with an 'AC' waveform. Personally, as they look easy to remove, I would mark up and remove the transf windings and check for shorts between windings and single winding to winding resistance checks. As you know, shorted fets are a prime candedate but if they are blown what caused it? With meter in diode mode, FETs Source to drain should be (roughly) half volt drop in one polarity and open in the other and the gate should be fully isolated from drain and source. All dependant of the fet in test being out of circuit of course all though an in circuit dead short from Drain to source is a sure sign of blown fets. drop in
@TheInfoworks
@TheInfoworks 11 күн бұрын
Jamie, thanks for your time in this detail. On the Victron charge controller we found n channel fets on the positive. With a short between positive and the transformer I'm thinking it's one of these. They seal it up like that to discourage cloning by Cheap Charlie. In reality Cheap Charlie already has MPPTs out there very much cheaper (just divide their spec by two). MPPT is not rocket science. Thanks Andy. I would put the same amount of effort in to trying to repair it. It looks well made, just not designed to be repaired. Given the installation location of many of these units on boats, I can see why they are sealed. Its a shame that they are. I don't really think that they have much to be gained from preventing repairs. Most people don't consider repair before they replace. The only reason people consider repair with phones and laptops is because of what is on them, rather than the equipment. The amount of working stuff I can get from the tip is testament to that.

Well done getting it apart. The aluminium cover you are cutting, looks like it’s injection moulded. All the sides will be drafted (angled) to release it from the mould. So measuring from a curved, drafted face is very difficult. If you stand the controller vertically on the edge you are trying to measure from, against something square (angle plate) your measurements will be easier and more accurate. If I had one of these, I could mill the slots in the cover to access the fets. These controllers are very expensive, so I don’t blame you spending time getting it apart😊👍👍

I saw there is an aluminium plate inside the cover to disperese heat and maybe shield the outside world from high frequency fields. Maybe it can be heated with some inductive power aplied from the front. A few big neodymium magnets on a roting disc driven by some drilling machine will cause heat. Or an half open tranformer with iron core, an electromagnet, can induce current in the aluminium? Then the heat is generated from inside and from all conductive parts near the front. And now with the "substance" available it could be tested at what temperature it becomes soft. Worth a try.

John, thanks for your donation, much appreciated. The solder problem stems from relay contact arcing, and this is initially caused by inverter overheating. I have further videos in this series, including the re setting of the relay contact gaps. You may find this interesting. To keep inverters cool it is helpful to install a small external fan, run on a time switch so it runs every day from (say) 10 am until 6 pm. Cheers

It could be filling the device and making it unserviceable is also a cooling issue. The coils and even the capacitors may get hot in a non ventilated box. I have a faint memory some of the earlier Blue Solar devices where filled with something similar to sand. But I would rather have a serviceable unit than having it glued. The design is trivial and easy to check for errors if not filled with "glue". Att least they could have made all power electronic devices on the heatsink and the fuse accessible.
