My mum got sooo much ECT during her lifetime. She passed away in 2019 (suicide) but prior to her death she probably had 30 rounds of ECT. It did seem to help her a little.

I can definitely see it working, especially as the technology has come a long way since the early days. If there are indications that it'll work, the patient consents and it's done in a controlled, gentle manner, it sounds just fine. The old method seemed to be just a small step down from outright electrocution though, and that is *not* okay, and hopefully not done anymore, especially not on patients who are unable to consent.

I did the ECT thing when I was about 19. It worked well, but i didnt keep up with the maintenence visits because it gave me amnesia. I got most of my memories back with time, but the year around the procedures is still redacted.

It’s definitely the kind of thing that is offered as a last option when other things aren’t working but it’s been known to have amazing results that can save people’s lives… problem is we’re not 100% sure how it works 😅

I grew up with my schizophrenic uncle very much present in my life since I was born. Im glad for that. As much as it would sometimes scare and confuse me as a kid, im happy i got to spend time with him. I love my uncle. His schizophrenia is very severe and medication has never helped him. I've yet to meet anyone in Glasgow that works in mental health who hasn't met him or heard of him. He's the worst case here, so is spoken about a lot. He is one hell of a fighter. The meds hes been on for so long have now destroyed his body. He was in hospital last yr and they called us to say goodbye twice but he fought through it. We tried to fight the DNR that the doctor's placed on him but they refused as they don't think hes worth saying due to his schizophrenia. He loves living, and he is happy despite living in a mental health ward. He values his life and so do we. Heartbreaking illness. Stay strong and keep fighting

The problem is that it changes you on a subconscious level. The way you react to the world might improve, yes, but there’s just as high a chance that it will do damage. Your basically just forcing someone into an epileptic state forcefully. For days you won’t be able to access certain memories and have brain fog. It’s horrible.
@AyitaLightfoot62218 сағат бұрын
Yes ECT is done very differently now. Back then they didn't know the right voltage and it was most often done quite barbarically.

ECT, TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), and VNS (vagus nerve stimulation) are also used for individual with treatment-resistant depression and have had amazing results. From what I’ve seen at the counseling agency I work at, some insurance companies will cover these procedures if they receive a letter for medical necessity by the counselor. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is also being used for Parkinson’s related tremors. It’s very exciting to consider all the potential applications for the treatment of brain-related disorders!

I think it's an image problem. It's always depicted in movies as torture and it absolutely used to be, but that depiction hasn't updated with the advancements made. My mom keeps wanting me to get evaluated for the magnet version of it, but I have bipolar, not regular depression, and I've heard that it doesn't mix well with bipolar. My meds work well enough, so I just don't want to change what I have going on

I know what you mean, it's like James who are talking to? I'm like "I'm just arguing with the voices", one time too, I was told I was on the defensive. Well yeah, coz I'm always being attacked, judged, accused etc on every little or big thing by my voices... ❤
@Thesupermanpunch-bd5pn20 сағат бұрын
Does those hallucinations sound like your own voice or different? Because I have like strong conversations with my own voice and it offen ends bad for me, like break tv or anything, to defend myself from myself (that voice).

Had ECT for a year for my treatment-resistant depression. I won't pretend there weren't some deficits but I'd do it again if I had to, it's the only thing that was even close to managing it.

It's not how it used to be in the past. People receive anesthesia so they're not aware of the pain and muscle relaxants so that they dont have their whole body cramp up because of the electric schock. The whole procedure only lasts a few minutes with probably less side effects than the medication people with severe mental disorders need to take

Ive also heard it has worked wonders for Asperger's aka the social side of the autism spectrum
@audreydoyle526819 сағат бұрын
Are you autistic yourself? Cause the social aspect of autism doesn't come down to electrical currents easily being switched to a NT frequency. It's instinctual. You either have allistic instincts or autistic instincts. That is too primal to be tampered with by electrical currents. If by social, you mean anxiety, then perhaps. Autistic people are usually anxious due to a lifetime of rejection and getting it wrong. So, we goof up a lot. Could it treat the anxiety? That would be great. Otherwise, no sense looking for a cure. Autistic people are not broken. The world is.
@cjandauntieyaya1446Күн бұрын
The problem is that the OG version of ECT was torture and caused brain damage because there was no way to measure voltage/amperage/duration and the affects on brainwaves. Nowadays, we can get the person in the MRI and do a contrast scan that measures brain activity, then do the ECT and go back and have the person get scanned again to see exactly what was changed and to what severity.

I always feared electric shocks treatment when I was early in my journey of psychosis. I still think if I was having a psychosis today and the psych ward wanted to administer ECT to me I think it would amplify the fear factor of my psychosis. I constantly in a psychotic state think everyone is a demon so I would only think that more if they strapped me down and did this to me.

Do you know why D.I.D and schizophrenia are mixed up so much? We got diagnosed with DID and it's been such a difficult time trying to explain to people the difference between internal dialogues vs hallucinations.

So when they used to call DID split personalities people confused the two. I also knew a woman who was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia because she heard her alters in her head and they were mistaken for hearing schizophrenic voices. So maybe situations like that also cause confusion?

My ex had ECT for medication resistant schizophrenia, it absolutely saved his life. He has a full time job as a store manager, lives alone, has lots of friends, no longer constantly terrified of highly distressed by his hallucinations and delusions. He did become slighlty more migraine prone but strongly preferred that to how he felt before. But also it can be used abusively in some places still on those who cannot or did not consent and are textbook candidates (such as dementia patients in government care facilitie, where I live in Québec this is sadly the bulk of the usage. Also is on incredibly outdated equipment often in these cases. A very small amount of ect treatments are done in contemporary clinics on consenting patients who are a good fit for it.) I think it needs to be both destigmatized and where I live regulated better to stop the abusive use.

@erik76479 сағат бұрын
@lovewins7412 I mean, yeah, so many people deserve access to this treatment yet the government neglects to set up modern clinics or end this decades out of date practice of forcing jt when it is harmful. They rely on the stigma and that no one wants to talk about the good side, lr when they do ignore the bad side to get away with this. But I really really want to make clear I think ECT is an absolutely incredible option for many people, and it saves lives. I want a better future for ECT not it being banned
