Isn’t it better to get a heating pump installed?
@americanbackroadcreationsКүн бұрын
Great question! Older homes are not always conducive for modern heating. This particular home was built on bedrock in the Appalachia region. Previous owner did try but ended up compromising part of the foundation. Sometimes you have to ask yourself if the juice is worth the squeeze. For us, it was not cost effective to redo the entire central heat and air system. This was truly a starter home for us at the time, nothing more. We have since sold and moved on, but I left these videos up on the channel to share the experience we had using these heaters. I made an entire playlist of kerosene heater videos while we lived there, check it out. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. If you haven’t already, please consider subscribing. Take care!

thank you for the information. I find myself worrying about using my dynaglo heater in my living room for about an hour at a time. I crack a nearby window but I still wonder if its safe. I cant find a straight answer online. All i can find is " use in a well ventilated area". thats it. any information from you would be great. thanks.
@americanbackroadcreationsКүн бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the comment! I’ll do my best to explain this, it’s a little bit of chemistry honestly. The reason all manufacturers of kerosene heaters say to use in well ventilated area is because when kerosene burns it takes the moisture and oxygen out of the air and it’s byproduct is a low amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and a slight amount of soot. This is usually never enough to trip a carbon monoxide detector even if it’s in the same room with the heater. The reason you need to crack a window open is to allow fresh air (oxygen and moisture) to constantly cycle into the room and the byproducts can escape out the window to maintain air quality. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. I have lots of kerosene heater videos on the channel, check them out for more helpful information. You don't need to buy kerosene cans. Just buy the 2.5 gallon K1 kerosene at the store and when it is empty you can refill it at the gas station. You can add 5-15% isopropyl alcohol to the kerosene to improve its burn, but do not store it long term (like between winters) with alcohol pre-mixed or it can attract water. Just mix it before you fill the heater. The ratio of the mix can be the least amount of alcohol to get it burning clean. If 1 cup of alcohol per gallon of kerosene, that is a good starting point (1 cup = 8 oz). If the kerosene is poor quality, you can increase the alcohol as needed. Everyone says start and stop the heater outside. No thanks. I light it inside and extinguish it inside. No problems with soot whatsoever. If your heater is burning properly you may at worst get a puff of smoke when shutting it off. More important is that after you run one full tank of fuel through the heater, DO NOT refill it but let it dry-burn. Do this outside and let it sit there and dry burn at full wick height until it burns out itself. This will renew your wick to like-new and ensure clean, hot burning which means no soot or smoke.

This is one of my much older videos. I’ll just say, finding kerosene during Covid was a nightmare in our area. We had younger children in the house when we started using these heaters. We always started, shut down, and fueled outside to minimize smell, smoke, and residue in our home for the kids sake. I always got a lot of compliments when we had visitors, they were always shocked when they saw the heater but couldn’t smell it. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. There going to stop selling kerasene. What will you do.?
@americanbackroadcreations9 күн бұрын
Is this a hypothetical question? Only asking because where I live, there is no shortage or ban on kerosene and no credible sources stating they’re going to stop selling it. This is one of my older videos and I have since then moved out of this starter home and into a house that has electric heating and two gas fireplaces (that can also be easily converted back to wood burning if I had to). Of course, I still have my kerosene heaters if I absolutely had to resort back to that. (They are great to have during power outages because they require zero electricity.) I made many kerosene heater videos to share my experience and information I learned when I was in that situation to help others navigate something they may not be familiar with but could be an option if they needed to go the kerosene heater route. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. If you haven’t already, please consider subscribing. Take care!

It can get down to -25F here, so your max cost figures would probably be too low.
@americanbackroadcreations9 күн бұрын
Yes, my calculations would be too low going up against consistent -25 degree temps. These calculations were based on my coldest temps being in the single digits to teen temperatures. We did experience 3 days of -5 to -15 degree temps one month but my fuel usage still averaged out by making sure heaters were turned off for a few hours when I could. Question: Say you only need to run the heater only 2-3 hours a day, can you fill the tank initially then use it everyday for 2-3 hours until the fuel is used up? Or does a full tank has to be used at once lighted?
@americanbackroadcreations16 күн бұрын
That is a great question, the answer is yes…you can fill the tank initially and run it off and on as needed. Just because you fill the tank does not mean you have to burn it all nonstop. The instructions on all home kerosene heaters all state that K1 kerosene is required, not gas station kerosene.
@americanbackroadcreationsАй бұрын
Hi 👋 You may not be aware or familiar with this, but in some states (definitely where I live) some gas stations have a separate pump located off to the side of the gas station property that is strictly for clear, k1 kerosene and by law they are required to label it. The clear, k1 kerosene sold at gas stations is the same as what you find on major retail store shelves. The only difference is that it is not prepackaged which is why there is a huge price difference. There are different grades of kerosene so you have to pay attention to how the pump is labeled if purchasing from the gas station. I do know in the north east states and major metropolitan areas it is very difficult to find clear, k1 kerosene sold at gas stations and this is mainly due to state/city regulations and this causes people to have to resort to buying the prepackaged clear k1 kerosene from major retailers such as Rural King, tractor supply, Walmart, etc. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel! If you haven’t already, please consider subscribing. Take care!
@hazel555Ай бұрын
@@americanbackroadcreations that's great that you can buy K1 in your area gas station at a reasonable price; I wish I could say the same in WI, where the lower-grade gas station kerosene would quickly foul a heater wick.

How long does the wick last using the heater as your primary source f heat?
@americanbackroadcreationsАй бұрын
Sorry for such a late response, trying to catch up on all the comments on the channel today. So I can get a wick to last a really long time, way more than 2 winter seasons with proper dry burning and maintenance (using it as primary heat).
