Sylvanas ruined the horde for me. But her plot armor was god tier according to blizzard writers. When they deviated away from strong orc characters, which embody the spirit of the horde, they lost me.
@siliarba8 күн бұрын
It was always annoying how they shafted Vol'Jin, but moving beyond that I was interested to see where Sylvanas as Warchief would go. Even back before she was turned undead, she was known as a ruthless leader known for her incredible skill in strategy and waging combat/war. It made sense for a time where the burning legion had returned and had to be fought back for the final time. But then they never showed this, instead she went on her own adventure gathering things for vague reasons. To make it worse, a lot of the writing seemingly made her out to look like she was trying to be up to no good for everyone, which made no sense, sure she's never been the most moral character, but she had been shown to fight for her people and give everything for them. And while I'm somewhat fine with them setting things up for the future and keeping things vague. At a time where Horde and Alliance were allied and needed each other desperately to fight the Legion, Genn Greymane, basically the second in command of the Alliance, grossly misused his power to attack Sylvanas her fleet on arrival, and this wasn't even after figuring out she was up to no good, this was his personal vendetta against her for killing his son the previous war. And while I don't dislike the story of a vengeance fueled father not giving a damn about anything else, he was always written as if he was in the right for doing what he did, both in universe as out as he was never punished for it. The entire expansion didn't just leave the Horde off the screen sort off speak, they actively acted like they were evil and anything the Alliance did against them was justified and good, which was rediculous.

Legion was fine, the real problem was BfA
@Skollshorties8 күн бұрын
BfA featured the Horde and the Alliance. It has its own plethora of issues but it didn't have this specific issue. Legion didn't feature the Horde enough and that is the issue in this video.
@AlexanderForsman8 күн бұрын
@Skollshorties personally I never had a problem with Voljin dying he was given such emotional sedan as he appointed Sylvanas. With the possibility of him returning as a loa(of warchiefs) i saw this as a tragic yet compelling storyline. Sadly BfA fucked over all interesting nuance with it's "fuck lore" approach to story telling. If you wanna talk boring deaths in Legion then Tyrion just being exploded was far worse. I agree with that the main story had a lot of Alliance characters but all the class storylines were full of Horde characters too.
@Skollshorties8 күн бұрын
@@AlexanderForsman I listed the Hunter one as a prime example of how poorly the Order Halls did Horde characters too. I won't go too in-depth with it because that is A LOT of classes to cover but most were not about the horde. And the whole center point of the video was clarifying why Vol'jin's death and what came afterwards mattered and why it was bad. It all started with Vol'jin's death here which was indeed undeserved and handled poorly afterwards as well.
@straighttalkwithkyle79478 күн бұрын
Everything you have to say about the Doomhammer can also be said about the Ashbringer. The Horde only lost Voljin at that battle. The Alliance lost Varian and Tyrian who I know is the head of a neutral faction but he's basically Alliance literally being a founding paladin.
@Skollshorties8 күн бұрын
Tirion left the Alliance because it mistreated Eitrigg (an orc) and the Alliance stripped him of everything for doing so. I consider Tirion one of the most Neutral characters in Warcraft for this act. He even saves Eitrigg as well afterwards and remains forever neutral after.
@straighttalkwithkyle79478 күн бұрын
@@Skollshorties Tirion didn't leave the Alliance. He was cast out of the original Alliance of Lordaeron at a time of great political upheaval in general. That Alliance had basically dissolved at that point. It's not the same post Third War Alliance. His home was in traditional human lands. He was the leader of the Argent Crusade true, which is neutral and accepts anyone in their order, but he was also the leader of the Knights of the Silver Hand at the time of his death which at the time of his death was an Alliance only order of paladins. It only became neutral after his death in Legion when the player character became Highlord. It only lasted that way for Legion as the Blood Knights and Sunwalkers left to join the Horde in BFA and fight in the Fourth War. It's that Order that cast him out before the Third War but at the start of Wrath he becomes their leader when he uncorrupted the Ashbringer.
@Skollshorties8 күн бұрын
@@straighttalkwithkyle7947 Tirion Fordring never rejoined the Alliance and his story matters as to why he never did and why he felt the way he did. He's specifically not an Alliance Hero but a neutral one. He was cast out for his beliefs and while the Alliance's perspective changed on him years later, he never officially rejoined and remained Neutral. He wasn't the leader of the Order until he appeared out of hiding and his first order was making the order of the Argent Dawn and Silverhand into the Argent Crusade.
@straighttalkwithkyle79478 күн бұрын
@@Skollshorties The Silver Hand never left the Alliance. He may have never formally rejoined the Alliance himself but that didn't mean that other Silver Hand Paladins weren't still Alliance members. The headquarters was the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind until the Legion paladin order hall became Lights Hope Chapel. He was much more Alliance affiliated than he ever was Horde affiliated. Horde paladins fall into other orders. It was only in Legion when any of it became neutral and that only lasted for Legion.

Interesting that you mention The Doomhammer cause my main is Enhancement Shaman, so this is what we had.... even tho I thought it was a 2H. Giving elmental a fist weapon for artifact was surprising, but a fist/claw weapon would have worked welll as an artifact weapon for Enhancement, or maybe some cool axes. I didn't mind using Doomhammer tho.... just cause that was the whole point of Legion and the artifact weapons, to use all these special notorious weapons that have names and history. I really liked Legion for the emphasis on class quests and the artifact weapons, mage tower, and tons of other stuff. Tho I agree that survival hunters being a melee class was just strange and while I get the whole beastmaster class fantasy, hunters are the only class that uses ranged weapons so it doesn't make sense to turn one spec into melee. I disagree about Rexxar being a beastmaster spec, he seems more like survival as a melee class that has pets to help him. As for the lack of horde lore or character involvement, I do agreee that Vol'jin having a cheap death sucked for such as unique and special character, and u never see the Tauren do much or be as involved with named hero characters like before. But warlords of draenor was basically a whole xpac about the orcs, so you can find extremes with a focus on just orcs or night elves, or a mix of races that feels ore balanced. Just depends on what the theme for that xpac is. In a way, Burning crusade, warlords of draenor, and legion was like an outland/i;;idan trilogy. We saw 2 different versions of azeroth, the normal one and the corrupted one. And then Legion was a chance for illidan to try to redeeem himself. Kinda cool.

I hated that they killed Vol'jin, he became my favorite character in Mists due to just how badass he was made in the expansion. I honestly believe that it would've been more meaningful for Thrall to have died while Vol'jin faked his death to have the Zandalari join the horde in BFA. Sylvanas would've still became warchielf, allowing her to have her arc. Then Thrall would've died next to Vol'jin on the battle field allowing there to be a real reason for him to leave doomhammer for the shamanas. Giving Vol'jin more time to build up his amazing character further, he wpuld've honestly been amazing in shadowlands compared to Thrall.

@hydromancer491610 күн бұрын
I might be biased as an Alliance player, but if anything I think this was just the Alliance getting "their turn" after the last expansion and a half had been so horde-focused. Like, the whole story of WoW from the Darkspear Rebellion to the end of WoD was pretty much about the Horde. It might have been an overcorrection, but the Alliance deserved their time in the spotlight after that. Especially given that the spotlight went right back to the Horde with the Sylvanas plot in BfA.
@Skollshorties10 күн бұрын
It's important to remember that while the Horde got a big spotlight in MoP with the Rebellion, the Alliance was still ever present for it. That's where that goes out the window in Legion. The Horde wasn't even there. And WoD was not about the Horde it was about fighting AU Orcs and not the Horde itself.
@hydromancer491610 күн бұрын
@@Skollshorties The Alliance was present for the rebellion but the storyline was about and driven by Horde characters like Vol'jin, Thrall, and Garrosh. And yes, WoD wasn't technically about the Horde, but I still consider alternate timeline Horde characters who are part of the "Iron HORDE" to be Horde-adjacent. You have good production value though, I subscribed
@Skollshorties10 күн бұрын
@@hydromancer4916 I don't really count the Iron Horde as Horde adjacent the closest you've got are the Mag'har who joined after the fact two expansions later. That'd be like calling Arthas "Alliance adjacent". And again, you still had multiple storylines with the Alliance prior in other patches too. That's the main issue here that I'll repeat. If Legion had the Horde in anything close to how the Alliance was placed in MoP, it would be fine.
@Rohan_Trishan2 күн бұрын
Yea thats true... WoD was very orc-focused and felt like it gave more attention to the horde. Its debatable if Blizz actually favors one side over the other. Most people used to say that Horde was the devs favorite since they got the more offensive racials while alliance got more defensive stuff. I'm not sure myself, but I agree that Vol'Jin deserved better.

To me this video shares a large amount of gripes I have with Blizzard's overall writing structure. it feels very skewed to one side of the aisle. This structure ultimately caused me to stop caring for Warcraft's lore period. the factions, both the Horde and the Alliance lack flavor now unlike in the past, and this will sound very stupid I am aware. The Alliance overall gets much better treatment than the horde in the story, part of why I stopped playing (small part but a part relevant to this rant). post Mists it did not feel good to be a horde player because you were almost always the bad guy of some campaign, or the party that ended up worse off. Ultimately this is more of a problem warcraft overall right now shares so I will only mention it briefly. The story feels soft and kind of boring, like the writers are afraid to go even slightly in the direction of 'the factions still slightly dislike each other' due to the damage that BFA did. Overall I want the Horde to get better treatment before I am even remotely interested in the lore again. That's just my take though.
