That pocket used to be for Pocket Watches. This I found out when purchasing a pocket watch and chatting to the salesman. It fits and you have that dressy little chain hanging around your waist.

Maybe you should check out the craft work on the Elizabethan Peascod Armour Breast Plate. Designed to turn the shot from those damned new fangled fire arms. Quite successful and I imagine as effective against modern weaponry to a point. The armour is a flatter breast plate upper but bulges into a belly plate down toward the waist with the whole lot sporting a curve from centre to the flank. The aim was so the shot strike did not deflect down into the legs or funnily enough your cods.

A folded sheet of paper can break a pencil in half, so I don't see why an angled thin sheet of metal couldn't deflect a bullet.

There was some history show decades ago that tested knight armor (helmets and chest armors) in a similar way against bow and arrows. A lot of the curves and edges deflected the arrows. This video totally reminded me of that.
