I love your channel, my career has been in farming in the Kent Downs. We have some lovely birds up here with no water around. I love going to The Oare Marshes Nature Reserve. I have been suffering from severe arthritis in both knees limiting me to walking about 200 metres in this last year. I have now had one total knee replacement and hope to get the other one done in late January, I am so looking forward to getting out to nature reserves again. I love Rye Harbour, Dungeness National Nature Reserve and Sandwich Bay and will try Elmley as soon as I get mobile. I hope to bump into you one day. I love your approach, like me you don't know it all and you don't pretend to, I am not ashamed to admit that I often carry a bird ID book with me. Happy birding.

@@grahamcuthbert783 yeah hopefully meet you. It’s quite unnerving now, as each time I go out, more and more people recognise me 😂. I’ve only been birding less than 4 years, so won’t remotely know everything. When I speak to birders who have been doing it decades and still making mistakes, gives me hope. I wanted my approach to be more casual than polished BBC nature presenters - leave in mistakes, no silly B roll of walking past a camera or music overlay. Thanks for the reply. See you out there.

Congratulations on at least "101 lifers" on your Vietnam, Malaysia trip. It seems everywhere you go in Malaysia there are birds, not only that, from my experience they are so much more colourful than the can I say rather drab colours back home in the U.K. I'm here with my wife for some considerable time and will attempt to shadow some of your footsteps along the way. You have shown that forested areas (and there are many) are not necessary for birding in Malaysia, your incredible count during your KL urban sessions show that. Many thanks for all the maps, tips, tricks, great narration and videos along the way. You should have your own TV series, it was that good.

@@stormcabbirds I checked it out a few weeks ago, the name has changed in recent years and prices doubled, although I think it has had a major refurbishment. The first time I visited the road down from the town was closed due to a bridge replacement taking place. I spoke with the construction manager who told me he had seen a tiger on the road while he was heading to work one morning. A bit unnerving as I was walking. Last time I was there the road was open and I walked the loop down and up, quite productive at times. The trails I found to be mostly unproductive for birds but better for insects.

Paya Indah Wetland is a protected area under the National Wildlife Parks (Perhilitan) but I don't know why the entrance is now managed by Gamuda (major property & infra developer) though they have a good track record of conserving biodiversity and protecting green spaces in all their developments - they have established an arboretum near the entrance The wetlands is huge and you can arrange for tours, cycle & walk thru' the trails. There should be plenty of birding opportunities within the wetlands at the lake shores (herons, egrets, waterhens etc) On your next trip, do pay a visit to Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) in Kepong, KL. There are plenty of bird opportunities within the park (take the guided tour where the oldest deciduous trees are located). Also Putrajaya Wetlands (huge tract), Putrajaya lakeside the middle islands are migrating stopovers. Good luck & happy birding!

Definitely a skill you need to develop. Constantly be looking 360°, on the ground, eye level, in the sky. Regularly stop and look straight into trees & bushes without moving your head. That way if there is a bird moving, you’ll see it, and know it wasn’t because you moved your head. Check as many birds in the flock as possible as there could be a dozen different species.
