Having a hard time finding brass screws with longer smooth shanks. Since it seems that the length of the smooth shank is not speced, that some manufacturers have changed them and made them shorter in length. Can you or anyone provide a link to a brass screw with shanks that are specified. I need 3/4" but would like length options. I am using #10 screws, but could change if needed.

That looks like so much fun! I never build RC's as a kid, just Free Flyers in elementary school and one U-Control in high school. Now I'm learning woodcarving as a winter hobby. Hopefully to add more to my whirligigs down the road. At 71 it is quite a learning curve lol! I haven't carved anything since I was a Boy Scout making a neckerchief slide. Enjoyed! Take care!

How is a corner to corner cut in a square 35 degrees?
@robertcornelius3514Ай бұрын
I live in a windy area and have lost some planes, so I decided to angle the nose down around 7-8 degrees. When you drill the hole in to the bottom of the Whirligig is when you angle the drill bit. Works like a charm.

The problem I find using nails is that over time they will bend in the wind.
@gwheydukeАй бұрын
In all my experience I've never had a nail, the size that I use (6 penny) bend in the wind. Although I suppose that if you had a rather large propeller and a small nail it could conceivably happen.
@bobmarske3103Ай бұрын
Easy to follow process . . . I prefer to mark the angles on the wood stock before I cut the hub, then run the pilot drill through the center point
@gwheydukeАй бұрын
Yes, that's a good idea, then you have an accurate center point.

I want to make a new piston for my enya SS40. Agonizing about how to get the wristpin exactly 90 degrees to the bore. Your video would be better without the music. Thanks for sharing.
@gwheyduke2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comments. You can make a replacement piston; I think those were aluminum with 1 ring. Some were made with no rings. You would need an accurate drill press or mill to drill the wrist pin hole. I set mine up on the mill and use a Palmgren vice on the table to hold the piston on its side, with a V block in the jaws to center the piston. When you machine the piston blank in the lathe, it will leave a tiny "pip" in the center. You can use this mark to center the drill bit over the piston, then just move the piston under the drill bit with the X axis hand wheel to the desired position of your hole. Use a center drill first, then an under sized drill bit (-.005) then ream to final size. Probably around 3/16" or 4.5mm

Help!!!! I made a ferris wheel whirligig and it doesn't want to turn towards the wind. How do you determine how big to make the tail or rudder??? Thanks for any info.
@gwheyduke3 ай бұрын
Well that's an excellent question. Bigger is usually better, also the further back the tail fin is from the center of the pivot point the more force it will have to turn the whirligig into the wind.

Where is 2:1 gear ratio you don't show. Main part of engine
@gwheyduke3 ай бұрын
The 2 to 1 gear ratio is between the crankshaft and the cam shaft. You can see them in this video of the engine running. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eGLZdoZ_atCJoaM The brass gears are actually located behind the flywheel.

Did ya fix the water leak?And add oil to the crank case?
@gwheyduke3 ай бұрын
Yes, well the water leak wasn't a real problem as I had simply shorted out the intake and outflow of the cooling jacket. I put oil in the case before starting. Working on setting up a true water-cooling system with a pump.

"T-Nuts" go on a threaded shaft and are available with "teeth" to grip the wood, or flat plates (much like yours) with holes for screws.
@gwheyduke4 ай бұрын
Yes that’s certainly an option. Of course it would then require the purchase or making of some threaded rod to fit the nut. On the whirligig these were made for wire cut from discarded yard signs was used.
@5Iron4 ай бұрын
@@gwheyduke Threaded rods are available at most hardware stores. And if you don't want part of it to be threaded, you can slide a brass tube over that section.
@5Iron4 ай бұрын
To make it hold up better a.) over time and b.) outdoors, perhaps you could minimize slipping by coating the edge of the vertical disc, and the bottom of the horizontal disc, with rough-grit sandpaper or some other abrasive?
@gwheyduke4 ай бұрын
👍 good idea, I had thought of gluing some rubber cut from on old inner tube to the mating surfaces of the discs.

What fitting are you using from the boiler to the hose?
@gwheyduke4 ай бұрын
It's made in my shop. Threaded a piece of brass rod to fit the pressure release valve opening, drilled a 1/8-inch hole through it and then soldered a short length of 1/8-inch K&S brass tube to accept some model airplane fuel line.
