December 2024 and this video is still helping Hakko noobs like me out. Thank you! I'd accidentally used the 'Adj' feature wrongly thinking I was setting operating temp and had messed up my Hakko settings to where solder wasn't melting at the displayed temp. This helped me re-calibrate without having to buy a thermometer. Now solder melts at the right temp.

You’re awesome- this worked perfectly. I had messed up the adjustment and this cleared it up.

Thank you so much for this. I managed to mess it up as soon as it came out of the box and I've been trying to figure out what was wrong with it for two years! Finally soldered my first good joints today thanks to this.

I have no idea how I did it, but my Hakko was calibrated to show 750 at probably half that. Thanks so much for the fix.

Here we are in 2021 and this KZbin video is still very useful and saved me. Cant thankyou enough for this tip it would have saved me hours of useless diagnosis. Obviously, I need to better understand changing the temperature correctly without getting into calibration mode. Cheers mate!

Hi, thank you for this great video. Just one thing - you should measure ESR at 100 kHz.
@The1jonnyzАй бұрын
Electrolytic power caps should be tested at 120 seeing we're on 60hz in the US. They DEF shouldn't be tested above that, you'll definitely get false readings!
@sszzt4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! This seems to have fixed my temperature issues - even when it was reading 400 C (and that seemed to be the max it would go up to lately) it was barely able to melt a solder joint of approx 5 mm across.

I’m pretty sure I screwed mine up. Was trying to solder a 12 gauge wire in a test scenario for rc car electronics and couldn’t get good results fast enough even when set to 899 F. Going to try this reset when I wake up and hope for better results. I’m convinced I have made this mistake trying to adjust the temp.

I'm so happy I found this after my iron seemed to develop a mind of its own. Thank you very much!

The system I have does not work the way described in the video. Here are the instructions directly from Hakko's website kb.hakkousa.com/KnowledgebaseArticle10599.aspx You have to press both "UP" and "ENTER" while powering it up to do a reset. Pressing "UP" and power on will take you to a whole different menu for setting options.

Even if you used 5 meters of the same make ,the readings would still be different. If the meters had calibration certification, then they would have been closer I suppose.
@mikemullenix69565 жыл бұрын
Another proof that no two meters read the same. It's all relative ! However, if all the meters used the same frequency the results would be different as well. In regard to capacitors

Electrolytic caps are *not* precise components. Last time I checked, the normal capacitance tolerance was -20 to +50%. Looking at every last uF and every last milliohm of ESR is pretty pointless.

This did the trick, thank you so much for this information.

MaineWolverine, you're a star, even if Americans do say soda instead of solder :-) Yes, I screwed up, like everyone else. Why on earth don't Hakko include the reset procedure in the manual...best regards from Christchurch, England

Wrong frequency for ESR testing on the DE-5000
@dembydish6 жыл бұрын
You mentioned as long as the magic eye on the Eico 950 opens up the capacitor is not leaking up to 2 milliamps. Can you explain why the eye opens partially for some capacitors and fully for others? Is there any significance in the opening position relative to the capacitor's health etc.
@jamesdavies6866 жыл бұрын
Two things... Don't use probes with the ATmega tester, throw the cap right in the ZIF socket, you'll get bad ESR readings with probes. Another thing, why not use 100KHz to test ESR?
@coldfinger459sub06 жыл бұрын
The DE - 5000 is what I just purchased I’m new to electronics and understanding some of the functions and how to exactly use to test some of the features on this unit are still not quite clear yet. All the other features on the DE - 5000 if you can make a video specifically on that unit going over testing different components and its features and how they apply to repairing or making from scratch amplifiers and radio repair.
@jackcureton87527 жыл бұрын
I agree; great video. My main interest was the DE-5000 which I am learning to use. Any videos on it?
@Shane-ce9fm7 жыл бұрын
Great video! I would have liked to see you test the caps with the DE-5000 at the same frequency as the other testers to see how they compare at the same frequency.

Finally got mine reset (from another article); I had mistakenly changed the temp using the Up button, like many others, and found the temp kept going UP instead of down, and suddenly the tip was glowing RED! I was freaking out and thought I had a bad iron. Now it works well again, and even if it's off by 20 degrees, that's close enough, not doing SMD right now. Thanks for the video! They really should put a boldface disclaimer in the manual stating how easy it is to be an idiot. It's really a simple mistake one can make; I had read the manual, I just forgot.

I thought I bought a hunk of junk because my 40 year old Weller Solder Station worked better the new Hako fx888d. I measured the tip with a K-type thermocouple and found the Iron was about 300 degrees lower than the displayed set point. This procedure fixed it.

Buy direct from the Hakko website, or look at the list of authorized vendors that they have posted on their website. Can't go wrong that way.
