Yesterday, as one of the students was coming in to go to the restroom, I saw him let in two people who were not faculty, did not have badges, and were not MISD employees or the police. You're right. How is this safe and secure?

Seriously? "Safe and Secure". I'm a teacher at an Elementary School here in Mesquite. We have portables. How safe is it to give a student the key fob to go from the portable, to the front door of our building, let himself/herself in to go to the bathroom, and return to class, unsupervised? All the locks on the front door, all the door cameras in the world, are not going to keep someone from grabbing that key fob from an 8 year old and gaining access to the building. Just as bad, what's to keep a predator from grabbing that child and leaving with them? There is literally no adult supervision during this activity. None. All the student has to do is ask to go to the lavatory and they have the key fob. I honestly believe, and please correct me if I'm wrong, I honestly believe one of the worst decisions the administration of a school can do is to give an Elementary aged child free access to the school building. Moreover, free access to the outside of the school building without supervision. What's to keep them from running off? There's a driveway running right in front of the portables, what's to keep a student from getting injured by a fast moving automobile? I can't speak for my colleagues, but we know better than to bring up serious issues. During the current hostile political climate, it scares me to no end to think about what could happen under these circumstances. This issue is such a no brainer. But it's going to take a tragedy for anything to change. And who's going to get the blame? Not the administration. Not the students. We teachers are going to be blamed. Who does this "safety" audit, and what influence does the School District have on the outcome of the audit? That is a legitimate concern. I'm so worried about retribution, I've posted this from a friend's computer at their house, so I can't be tracked.
Is she the one that's arrested this week in the FBI raid in Houston in connection with drugs, firearms and gangs?

@@MesquiteISD Thanks. Both are 3rd grade teachers though. Houston and Mesquite are only 3 and a half hours apart, and teachers can move and change jobs. Just checking. That's all.

This is a wonderful story about the daily impact our teachers make in the lives of their students-even long after they leave the classroom. So happy for Aysa and her family! The quote: “Your heart is slightly larger than the average human heart, but that's because you're a teacher.”is perfect for Ms.Browne.
