The best thing about a handle on a throwing knife is the fact that it dampens the loud clang of a bad throw. I prefer leather scales but unless the knife has small holes on the handle your going to either have to drill some or go with a cord wrap. Good stuff 👍

Western "spin" throwing knives typically start at 12". I polled the community a while back. I think the preferred length of a competition throwing knife is either 13 or 14 inches. I'd have to double check. That being said, a 9.5" knife may not be allowed in competitions due to the minimum length rules. I've done a little prototyping myself and have found that every single aspect of design should have an explanation. In addition, to achieve optimal performance, the technique, grip, and mechanics need to compliment the object being thrown. I feel many modern designs lack this context (or it is never there to begin with) and it is left to the thrower to optimize the technique to match the blade. A good (well known) example of this is the arrow design by Tom Tom. He designed the knife for his technique which he explains in detail. It is easy to say a technique can throw any knife, but the reality is results will vary depending on how close a design is to what is considered optimal for a specific technique.

How do you feel about the cold steel sure flights
@halfspin10 күн бұрын
@timohanley-lx9li I have had a lot of Sure Flights over the years. I still have 6 of them in my knife collection. I also have a few Pro flights. They throw well full spin. They stab really nicely into the target because of the thin sharp tip. They are easy to stick so new knife throwers like them a lot. The problem is they are too thin and not durable. Most of mine have broken tips. It's a good fun knife to learn and throw full spin. But it's not a knife that last a long time.

@halfspin17 күн бұрын
@MVG-gf1er I am not great at Skanf. My aim with it is terrible. But when I do it I like to have a slightly lighter knife than I usually throw. Here are my suggestions. Osetr Origin by throwing zone would be my first pick. Also any Viyatich russian style knife if you can find one. I have the Kizlyar viyatich but DXB makes a Viyatich and a couple other companies. All the viyatich style knives seem hard to get if you are in the USA. Next I would go Tomtom Arrow style like the Arrow original by throwing zone, if you want more handmade craftsmanship, you can go with the Prince Steel Arrow. Or you can go with the AceJet stinger. I love the AceJet stinger but when it comes to skanf I prefer the Stinger air because it's thinner and lighter.

Wulflund and Delta2alpha has a ton of throwing knive sets just as good as Acejet. Also for ideas you can try throwing hurlbats, 5 to 7 point stars and stainless batwings from Karatemart and them throwing angels from England. Angels and Hurlbats are very hard to find and get but are worth it!

Oh good, you're looking for informative comments. Ad10 and 4-max are great. No idea how you ended up specifically on demko designs but you did good. People will say "get a 5-max", don't mind them unless you're collecting. 5-max is a less practical 4-max. Full on demko is where you want to eventually be when you can get there. He's the guy who came up with your two knives and most of cold steel's best. A custom demko ad10 would be great for you since you already like it but that's usually a $2000 grail sort of knife. The most logical conclusion is to get an ad20, the greatest American folder.

@lindboknifeandtool probably my favourite are the Thunder from JXEJXO. The minibokri are also awesome for rotational, so cool. I'm looking to get some Ostr style knives too, or maybe a T1 from Grafknives. The Strij from KyzliarSupreme too. Tons of cool knives out there haha
@lindboknifeandtool17 күн бұрын
@ cool thanks. Been looking into making some EDC/throwers. How important is cutting ability? I’m probably going to end up leaving a 30-40 thousandths of and inch at the tip, but taper quickly down to 10 to make cutting ability and resharpening a lot easier. I’m also probably going to use m2 high speed steel, but maybe some AEB-L if stainless is wanted. I always liked the spyderco throwing knife designs. Also check out the “kit Rae blackjet” throwing knife that’s what got me into them to start. Think I still have it too
@JackEspadas17 күн бұрын
@lindboknifeandtool If you want throwing knives probably you shouldn't make them a edge. You can have an edc you can throw and there are good throwing knives by good throwers that have an edge, but usually it's a risk not worth taking considering you usually only want to stick em point first. If you look at the ones I told you, none have a real edge. The ones you mentioned look really cool. If you start making knives for throwing, make sure to use a bug chunk of metal so they end up being at least 150g preferably over 200g in weight. For example, I use 280g right now if I'm not mistaken. 200/230 is probably the ideal. Good luck and have fun out there !
@halfspin12 күн бұрын
@lindboknifeandtool @JackEspadas I agree, good throwing knives should have a false edge and should not be sharp. A sharp throwing knife will never be as good. That said, I do enjoy having a sharp throwing knife for camping. Basically a knife that I can also use to throw. I have tried a few different models. My go to is the coldsteel true flight thrower. But I am also working on some other project knives.

Have the thunder from JXE JXO and they are perfect for my style of throw. Wanted some "dagger style" like this ones for halfspin and military but can't seem to find good ones in a budget in Europe. Sadly, JXE JXO only ships to my country the Thunder (or luckily, at least I have those) Also, I love the denomination for "dagger style" since it's exactly how I describe knives (arrowhead, dart, dagger, tanto, etc) and it doesn't seem to be the general consensus (people usually only go for "nospin, top heavy, balanced, etc)

Great video but I have to add my two cents. Just got a bunch of D2 Stingers and managed to snap off 15mm of the tip on one of the knives during the second session. This is what I was worried about before I ordered. I was afraid hard tooling steel might be more brittle and prone to breaking rather than bending based on my experience with drill bits. It is great for maintaining an edge but I’m not fully convinced it’s the best metal for throwing. I don’t throw recklessly so this was pretty telling. I have a bunch of the spring steel knives (not stinger however) and they are super resilient, never had a problem with possibly over 10,000 throws. I’ve contacted Acejet to see if they can help me out. Haven’t heard anything yet so fingers crossed. Hopefully this was just a defect.
@halfspinАй бұрын
@Toobigfortrials I am sorry to hear that. I have had no problems with my D2 AceJet knives. I have bent the tips on my regular stingers a couple times and had to hammer them back. But so far no issues with the D2 ones. AceJet says they guarantee their knives, so hopefully they get back to you. Let me know if they help you out, I am curious.
@ToobigfortrialsАй бұрын

They come blunt because of safety reasons which is smart. And better for everyone. Great knife. Would recommend to anyone who throws !
